I'm having a really hard time understanding how it is possible to turn the hips flat and keep spine angle consistent. The SI joint connects the spine to the pelvis. It has very little play in it, meaning the pelvis really rotates in conjunction with the spine. By turning the hips flat and the spine on an inclined plane, you are asking your back to endure an enormous amount of lateral bending and undbending. Seems like a recipe for major back problems to me.
@looselefty No No; the pelvis and rib cage turn as a unit on top of the hips; you will notice that Paul's butt swivels towards the target as he turns; your posture is bent forward from the hips which means protruded from the posterior which means butt swivels towards target and hips stay level beneath the pelvis and rib cage;
There is so much incorrect advice flying around about proper swing mechanics, so it's great to see a this correct demo of how the hips should turn. Good job.
At ( 1:51 ) of this video,,he states to have level hips,,,but shawn states ,,in the braced position ,,the left hip ( for right handers) is higher than the right,,,,which is correct???????????????
This is all to say that the worst thing to do is let the hips slide into the backswing where the front hip gets lower that the rear hip and then there is no possibility to bail out of that position on the downswing; the evolution of this is the "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3; Thanks for the comment! Shawn
Nothing we do here at the Learning centre is going to promote scooping; have a look at the "golf pro lesson compress through the ball" as well as the "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" for starters; then see "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" video for even more insight! Thanks for the concern and comment though! Shawn
hi love all you videos! easy explanations - I recorded my swing the other day and noticed a massive inside swing plane! I just cannot seem to let the club face open correctly without an extreme inside swing plane - would be great if you could have a quick look at my swing and post a coment or drill i can work on.. thanks
@hwiank Sorry I got to this one so late; but here goes for everyone because it is a great question: #1, the face will open by itself and does not need your help; please see "golf pro lesson takeaway and starting the swing" and #2, the best swing plane videos are "golf pro lesson swing plane" and "golf pro lesson how to feel your swing plane" Shawn
Same deal here Birdiemaskinen! I would suggest you get my dvd series first and foremost so that you understand the swing in depth; 4 hours on 3 discs and all inpriority sequence; very, very essential stuff that will help immensely...
Hello Shawn how are you? I have been told by many people to resist the turning of my hips on the backswing and my ball striking worsened tremondously because of this. However, when I felt that I tried to get my back facing the target, and rotating my hips, my ball striking went off the charts. I found that I started to develop a small bump of the hips to start the downsing, much like Hogqan. I found this tip fantastic. Thank you.
If you have the time could you have a look at my swing.
It would be much better for you to discover things in priority sequence and this is why I would recommend that you get my DVD series; 4 hours on 3 discs all in priority of importance plus execution on all shots on course in disc #3...Shawn
Fantastic Hip Turn!!! Way to go!! You are paying attention! Now all you need to do in the downswing is to maintain the tilt axis of your head away from the target; have a look at "Golf Pro lesson How to clear the hips properly" video as well as the "Golf Pro Lesson tilted Spiral" part 1,2 and 3 series;
Thanks for everything, man. Great stuff. Just a quick question: In terms of degrees, how much further do you think the shoulders should turn than the shoulders? Is it that much or pretty much the same?
Hey Bomgolf; Sorry for the delay in responding; I don't know how I missed you but here goes; You need to look at this a different way; have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson No Bones About it" video; which will explain exactly how the hips turn under the pelvis and rib cage with the shoulders completing the turn toward the top of the backswing adding the final 20 degrees to the backswing...Thanks for the question! Shawn
Hi Kamohloff! Sorry I missed you! Busy times this summer! Have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson Perpetual motion drill" and the "Momentum Toss" part 1 and 2; it will show you how you let gravity place the arms while to body gets out of the way in BOTH DIRECTIONS! Thanks very much for posting; I will try to get back to you sooner next time! :) Shawn
Having trouble with this one, when i keep my hips lvl, looks like my swing is on a very flat plane, is it supposed to look that flat??(the take away) havent tried it on the range yet, just doing practice swings in the yard. Just wanted to see what you think Shawn? Just looks really flat or laid off i guess on the backswing than what im used too. Thx for posting all these, trying to get this swing down, looks way diff than my old one.
if your shoulders are to turn around your spine, and your hips are to turn parallel to the ground. that would mean flattening your shoulders so they are also parallel?
I have an enlightening video for you! Have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson no Bones About it" video as well as the "Golf Pro Lesson Be a Solid Ball Striker" video; Thanks for posting and I will be sure to get back to you sooner next time!:) Shawn
Great tip, thanks for posting, been trying to find a cure for this problem for ages. Will put the drills to work and with being a left hander as well is even better. Thanks heaps.
I am baffled!! How can the hips be level when they are bent forward at address and during the swing. I understand that excessive tilt during the swing is wrong but to turn on a level plane can surely only be a feel and not reality.
Paul, the demo clearly shows erics right hip dropping lower, not staying level. Also level hip turn often will lead to a locking of the right knee, uprighting spine angle and flat shoulder turn even lower spine injury. You going for stackntilt ?
Shawn, after I reviewed this lesson for the second time, I realized its importance. I believe that I swing my best when I think of my hips turning back and through. A good thought for me to feel is everything (shoulder, arms, hands and club) going back and through together with my hips. In other words, I like to think that my belly-button is controlling the swing.
Thanks for your comment. No, your shoulders should turn around your spine. So if your right handed, your left shoulder should turn under your chin. At impact your right shoulder should take place of your left shoulder. Hope that helps, if you have any more question please let me know.

Aren't hips suppose to clear before the hands? This drill promotes scooping the ball.
