@farswept i don't know about that. sylvian shaped the sound make no mistake. the sheer arrogant hutzpah required to lead a band was in his DNA. he made a pact: he'd make two records of rubbish and sneak in some good stuff under-the-radar (suburban love, obscure alternatives, the tenant) , and then become the most original and clever pop star in history.
As much as I love David Sylvian, he's disappeared up his own ass now a days with his career. Bye melody and hello ambient drivel. Has already advised he's over the pop song.
all good artists do what THEY want not what the punter wants at some point they,ll have an hour in the limelight but thats not there motivation...a 50 plus bloke doing pop music would be laughable...if your not moving with your music give up!
@pawnsacrifice1 I never got the whole Bryan Ferry impressions thing really, still find it kind of weird. I don't listen to Japan and think oh this reminds me exactly of Roxy Music.
@ANTJMS Hmm, well, he most certainly has gone done the avant-garde road, that's for sure, and I 'm not that keen at all on his avant-garde records..I guess 'Red Guitar' was a good song.
i have sort of controversial remark to make, which is that japan were the radiohead of their day; what i mean is that they were concerned with making authentic music with zero compromise but sold records anyway. also they were years ahead of their time and knew it
Relax and swing:-)

R.I.P Mick Karn, Japan forever, one of the most coolest unique and original bands that ever existed..
They should be in the Rock hall of Fame in my opinion, they were definitely innovators and pioneers..

@guertler1967 Mick's of course entirely awesome but I say Barbieri really shaped the sound.

Rob Dean plays the most simple guitar solo ever, even I could play this :)

@pawnsacrifice1 wow poor Rob Dean, I always digged his contributions, nobody else seems to though. masami tsuchiya was awful with Japan IMO.
