Probably to best and most accurate movie about the other France (like there are two Spains, there is also a second France: The catholic-royalist one against the republican-secular one) during the last great war (in six roughly weeks of fighting in 1940 fair France lost four times more soldiers than during ten years in Algeria, not to mention the ridiculous efforts for the American quest for world domination in Mesopotamia and Bactria of late); a France not liking the Jews or the Anglo-Saxons...
Probably not the majority but still a considerable proportion of the French population did share the attitude of the amiable grandfather; that is not to say that they had any sympathies for the German occupiers but also no great spur to fight them or for the Americans; and of course the movie tries to show how vain such attributes like anti-Semitism are: As long as he does believe the boy to be Catholic everything is alright and he is almost his grandson; while he raves against the Jews.
