Brings back memories of my youth 1930s in London UK Saturday morning Movies for kids 2 penny's bag of peanuts and an orange Glad i didn't have to clean the cinema after! THANKS FOR THE MEMORY
I am now 76 Years of age and remember going to the movies for A nickle. I was six years of age and fell in love with Gene Autry and still carry him in my heart.
I am sixty and really love his songs. My father used to sing some (in portuguese) and I always wanted to know who the singer was ... just remeber he saying his name. Thanks for posting. I am from Brazil.
I am now 18 but I remember taking a cross country trip with my folks to Wyoming when I was seven. We stopped at a bison ranch for a night and bought a cassette with this and many other great western songs on it. Probably the greatest memory of my childhood.
I watched Gene on TV in the early 50's - his side kick at that time was Pat Butrim - Champion was his horse - where did those days go - great memories - Thank goodness for UTube - and Old Time Radio on the internet.
I watched Gene on TV in the early 50's - his side kick at that time was Pat Butrim - Champion was his horse - where did those days go - great memories
I was born in 1944 and when I was old enough to relize who Gene Autry was, I never missed a movie or radio show that he had. This man is a true saint and more people should follow his footsteps. Mr Autry was worth 320 million dollars and never forgot us common people who worked hard every day to put food on the table and pay the mortgage. Boy could we use him in the senate and congress today.
You said a mouthful, pardner! And, ya said it plain. Read his cowboy code. Now, if you've got kids, isn't so cool? From Beverly Hills to Watts and Compton, his fans were legion. Just to think, a hero who says a cowboy should have no racial or religious intolerance. I'dve rode in his posse any day! Let's see one of these sewer-mouthed celebrities make that claim!
of course old gene was a great singer and wester movie star, in 1954 i meet him in montreal forum in canada, remark see my youtube posting and my web site, tex lavallee the canadian western performer
Curley, I have been searching for a song my Dad used to sing. Part of it goes like this. Oh when your heart yearns for the West, Go get yourself that Gold Coast Express. Have you ever heard it? or know the lyrics to it?
Gene Autry was my great great uncle. By blood. These other ppl on youtube try to claim it but i have the written documents hes in my reunion books.. I was just at the autry family reunion.
Curley, have you ever heard of a Cowboy star from the 1940's or 50's named Jack Kleine? Or a "Cowboy Poet" named Baxter Black? Baxter is on YouTube. They are both neighbors of mine in the Arizona desert around Benson AZ
@curleyb3 hi curleyb3 i read that Gene Autry is the only one with 5 stars in the hollywood walk of fame ,i checked his music and it's great , you said you're 86 , what's your advice for a 20 years old man ?.
Thanks for the memories Curley. When I was a little girl I remember The Gene Autry show, I wanted to be a cowgirl. Now I live in the Arizona Desert with critters, wild life all over the place and love it!
Gene's horse was named Champion. His radio show "Melody Ranch" was an interesting mix of comedy (with Pat Buttram, who would go to be Mr. Haney on "Green Acres") and music. There was also a radio drama, running about 10-15 minutes in the center of the show. It was one of the longest-running shows of its kind on radio. I have some of the old recordings. Dennis
Thank you for the comment. I will check this out and want the right person to get the credit. I remember a Larry Phelps with Ray Whitley. Is he the Same Person?
@DaChikBehindU I don't know what Norman Phelps had to do with "Back in the Saddle." Ray Whitley wrote it and came up with the title. In the late Thirties, Whitley's music group that included Chill Wills was working at RKO making George O'Brien westerns. Whitley had to get up early in the A.M. in order to be on the set. He told his wife, "I'm back in the saddle again." When the song was written, he used it in an O'Brien western. Autry took it as his radio theme song in 1930.
@TheFrontrowkid I apologize. I did not mean that it was not written by Ray Whitely as well. Ray Whitely and Norman Phelps co-wrote "Back in the Saddle" together. Unfortunately, Norman Phelps was a better musician than he was a business man, and through a series of unfortunate events, he was not given the co-writer credit he deserved. He couldn't have done it without Ray, though.
@DaChikBehindU Don't know what Norman Phelps had to do with the song. Ray Whitley wrote it and first performed in a George O'Brien western in 1938. At that Whitley had a musical group that appeared in the O'Brien westerns. He got the idea from the song when he was getting very early to go to the studio. He told his wife one day "Well, I'm Back in the Saddle Again." Autry bought the song for his radio program in 1940.
@spacepatrolman Whoever told you that Gene gave Roy Rogers (note your spelling: "rodgers") his screen name has space between his ears. Len Slye was given that name by Republic to cash in on Will Rogers' popularity. When the name of Roy was first mentioned, Slye said "No, because there was a kid in my school named Leroy and I hated him." But Roy Rogers sounded Western and more important, it fit better on the marquee.
gene autry is the last great american hero, he was an inspiration to all and an example of what it meant to do the right thing and stand up for what you believe in, even when the odds are stacked against you. hats off to you gene, you'll always be remembered
Thank You for your comment. Yes I remember the Gene Autry radio shows. I wished they were back. Also remember when he used to come to Boston with the Rodeo and Ray Whitley used to broadcast here for the Rodeo. I was also a guest of Ray on his Radio program on WMEX in Boston.
A true classic - how could anyone not love this.

I used to listen to Melody Ranch when I was
a kid. It was a big thrill to see Gene in a

I think Melody Ranch is open to the public now.
It's a little north of Los Angeles, near Magic
Mountain and the Wm. S. Hart ranch.
