Hello, I have a clean unjailbroken iPhone 4, ver. 4.0.2, baseband 01.59.00.
It is December 11 2011 today. I was wondering if I can selectively upgrade to 4.2.1 only using tinyumbrella+greenpois0n while preserving bb?
I've read somewhere that says once Apple stopped signing 4.0.2, I can't upgrade to that firmware and my only option is upgrading to the latest one. Can you confirm that for me? Thanks!

Hey Mike. Just wanted to let you know that I was able to successfully upgrade to 4.2 from 4.0.1 without updating the baseband. This is the perfect video . I got this video after exploring atleast 100 of dem.
@jcXshi follow the lasted guide I have. you can only unlock with UltraSn0w if you have modem firmware 01.59.00. there is no unlock out for any other basebands.
@mwittchow i have an iphone 4 version 4.2.1 baseband 03.10.01.. what should i do? and if i upgrade to 01.59.00 can i still downgrade. will it do harm on my device?
I am keep getting freaking 1604 error ,, I am on the 4.0.1 (8A306) - My base band is 1.59.00. And the funny thing is i have tried so many times , and the same thing!
And by the way , after last time i got 1604 error, i opened GreenPoison and no matter what tried to follow steps ,, it crashed , iphone did give me anything besides "HANGING IN HERE" and thats it.
And here is the most important - after it crashed i am able to start up my phone as previous like nothing happened. still jailbrake

@067Vick at this point you cant. Your only option right now is 4.3 and if you need a jailbreak or unlock, stay away. We will make an updated tutorial as soon as it is possible to update and preserver you baseband.

I put in for months! Here's what I learned. To unlock I'd say I really recommend that you go with softunlock. com If you want to jailbreak it I totally recommend softjailbreak. com

okay i had 4.0.2 and tried doing this, but when it gets to part 6:06 (seting it up) on my screen comes up something asking me to insert a SIM card. HELP! :)

@GoldenGirl1314 no problem. you can either jailbreak it first and then run Ultrasnow and you should be fine. if you decide to upgrade to 4.2.1 so that you can have features like Facetime, then you follow the tutorial above, and it should work, it worked for me today.

best way to unlock? I have a standard iphone 4 on 4.2.1. I'm heading the Europe for two months so I'm putting my AT&T account on hold and my idea is to back up the iphone to itunes, then unlock it to use with a UK carrier. Then when I get back I'd just restore from my backup to set things right again.

@NoScopedAgain you didnt have that baseband to begin with before the tutorial or you did not follow the instructions correctly and there was an error when and if you started the TSS server.
Did all that but didnt work now is asking me to restore the iphone, I click restore and it says are you sure you want to restore and update???? what should I do??

Have you seen any cases where the JB failed (screen stayed black when pressing JB on greenpoison RC5 b4.? I followed the instructions to a T. Tinyunmbrella TSS server on, had the correct 1013 error after restore, so I am not sure what is up and where to go from here. Help!? BTW, using windows version of GP RC5 b4. Thanks in advance!!
@rainman4195 Did not realize there is an option for admin. Can you provide more insight on how to do this? Also, I have seen some tutorials where they exit recovery on tiny umbrella before running greenpoison (TSS server still running though), do you recommend this? Same with restarting iTunes before running greenpoison, some say that it should be running, so after greenpoison shuts off iTunes, some say start iTunes again before running the jailbreak. Thoughts on this and the admin question?

My iPhone 4 software 4.0.1 is jailbroken & unlocked in UK with a cut down O2 sim in the tray. Can the process be done with this sim in the iphone or do I have to put the original vodafone sim in to carry out the JB & unlock?
@warmywhite you can use your O2 sim. You will have to hacktivate it. To do this just run redsn0w right after greenpois0n. If you have any Vodafone sim cards those will work better as you will get legit activations for push notifications and what not.
@QUEENofVEGAS it wont be released until after iOS 4.3 which will be sometime next week most likely. us developers still have not received the 4.3GM yet.
I keep on getting the 1604 error no matter what I do. I have an iphone 4 on 4.1 with baseband 1.59.00. I've tried restoring on a mac, windows machine and another mac but I keep hitting the same problem. I tried doing it both in DFU mode and recovery mode but still the dreaded 16xx error. Dude, thank you so much. I was using TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery mode, but it kept going right back in after reboot. I didn't think about loading GP straight from the DFU mode. After following RedmondPie's guide 10 times, and failing each time, I was this close to pulling my hair out, or worse yet, just restore all the way and lose my 1.59 baseband. I don't need the unlock, but prefer to keep it for resale value. Anyway, you saved my bacon, so thanks again.

@soljahofallah786 this tutorial is to save your baseband.... if your phone start out with baseband 03.10.01 then your out of luck. unlock wont be out until apple release firmware 4.3
The jailbreak worked fine and the unlock I THINK worked fine aswell. the problem is the name of my carrier appears 02-UK (fine)..but I have no signal...and I got a message on the screen sayng...WAITING FOR ACTIVATION this may take some time...Ive tried to put the micro sim on and off. switch the i4 on n off, connnected n disconected...do u have any idea what this could be????

@djbrunocamargo28 the waiting for activation thing will only work if u have an AT&T sim heres what you do
when you're at the waiting for activation screen turn of the iPhone and run redsnow it should hacktivate the phone then through Cydia install ultras0w and all should work..Worked for me
@FlareDragon27 it is not necessary to set it up as a new iPhone but whenever you upgrade to a newer firmware it is better to. If you notice bad battery life I recommend setting it up as a new iPhone.
@FlareDragon27 you can download a program from cydia called appbackup I believe. It will let you save your appdata and restore it later on. So for Now go ahead and restore from a backup and if you notice battery problems restore and set up as a new iPhone.
@mwittchow just one last question. if i get battery problem and i have to restore and set my phone as a new one, will i have to start over all the 'upgrade 4.2.1 & preserve bb' process?
i got up to the part where you restore it and i have my shsh's saved and i start the tss server and i click option and restore to 4.2.1 and it says preparing iphone for restore and it takes awile and it says can not restore iphone please help i have an iphone 4 on 4.1 jailbroken and unlocked on 1.59.00
@iidabomb29 this tutorial is for iphone 4 only and will not work with the 3GS. I will make another tutorial later for the iphone 3gs to get to 4.2.1 untethered.

@srk771992 put an original sim in to activate probably AT&T. If you don't have that you can run redsn0w to hacktivate.

okay i had 4.0.2 and tried doing this, but when it gets to part 6:06 (seting it up) on my screen comes up something asking me to insert a SIM card. HELP! :)

I had firmware 4.02 baseband 1.59. and I was able to preserve it. thank you. for the tutorial. one advice remind people they need their AT&T original sim card other wise your phone will stay in activation mode. luckly I found the card. also make sure to include the ultrasnow 1.2 download that is not mention in tutorial that needs to be done in cydia. unlock succesful!

@GoldenGirl1314 no problem. you can either jailbreak it first and then run Ultrasnow and you should be fine. if you decide to upgrade to 4.2.1 so that you can have features like Facetime, then you follow the tutorial above, and it should work, it worked for me today.

best way to unlock? I have a standard iphone 4 on 4.2.1. I'm heading the Europe for two months so I'm putting my AT&T account on hold and my idea is to back up the iphone to itunes, then unlock it to use with a UK carrier. Then when I get back I'd just restore from my backup to set things right again.
I'd like an option to leave it unlocked and still use with ATT if possible too?
I'd like to be able to back it up to itunes while in Europe; should I create a new itunes profile for this?

First of lemme say this works great I am running 4.2.1 with mt 01.59.00 baseband and all's good but the only problem I'm having is that I can't activate facetime every time I try to it says "Waiting for Activation" and stays like that for ever. Can someone help please?

Pick your backup and click the "Continue" button to restore your phone. Some will argue that after Jailbreaking, you should select "Set up a new iPhone" - however, doing this will lose all your saved data. Restoring from a backup will still unjailbreak your iPhone, but leave your data intact. You won't be able to tell it was ever jailbroken.

Have you seen any cases where the JB failed (screen stayed black when pressing JB on greenpoison RC5 b4.? I followed the instructions to a T. Tinyunmbrella TSS server on, had the correct 1013 error after restore, so I am not sure what is up and where to go from here. Help!? BTW, using windows version of GP RC5 b4. Thanks in advance!!

@rainman4195 Did not realize there is an option for admin. Can you provide more insight on how to do this? Also, I have seen some tutorials where they exit recovery on tiny umbrella before running greenpoison (TSS server still running though), do you recommend this? Same with restarting iTunes before running greenpoison, some say that it should be running, so after greenpoison shuts off iTunes, some say start iTunes again before running the jailbreak. Thoughts on this and the admin question?

My iPhone 4 software 4.0.1 is jailbroken & unlocked in UK with a cut down O2 sim in the tray. Can the process be done with this sim in the iphone or do I have to put the original vodafone sim in to carry out the JB & unlock?

@warmywhite you can use your O2 sim. You will have to hacktivate it. To do this just run redsn0w right after greenpois0n. If you have any Vodafone sim cards those will work better as you will get legit activations for push notifications and what not.

I keep on getting the 1604 error no matter what I do. I have an iphone 4 on 4.1 with baseband 1.59.00. I've tried restoring on a mac, windows machine and another mac but I keep hitting the same problem. I tried doing it both in DFU mode and recovery mode but still the dreaded 16xx error. I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks in advance.

Dude, thank you so much. I was using TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery mode, but it kept going right back in after reboot. I didn't think about loading GP straight from the DFU mode. After following RedmondPie's guide 10 times, and failing each time, I was this close to pulling my hair out, or worse yet, just restore all the way and lose my 1.59 baseband. I don't need the unlock, but prefer to keep it for resale value. Anyway, you saved my bacon, so thanks again.

The jailbreak worked fine and the unlock I THINK worked fine aswell. the problem is the name of my carrier appears 02-UK (fine)..but I have no signal...and I got a message on the screen sayng...WAITING FOR ACTIVATION this may take some time...Ive tried to put the micro sim on and off. switch the i4 on n off, connnected n disconected...do u have any idea what this could be????

when you're at the waiting for activation screen turn of the iPhone and run redsnow it should hacktivate the phone then through Cydia install ultras0w and all should work..Worked for me

@FlareDragon27 it is not necessary to set it up as a new iPhone but whenever you upgrade to a newer firmware it is better to. If you notice bad battery life I recommend setting it up as a new iPhone.

@FlareDragon27 you can download a program from cydia called appbackup I believe. It will let you save your appdata and restore it later on. So for Now go ahead and restore from a backup and if you notice battery problems restore and set up as a new iPhone.
