In 1943, Stalin issued propaganda aimed at dividing the Germans and particularly at the Austirans, stating that if they separated from the other Germans, they could get a break. Among the prisoners at Stalingrad, the effect was immediate and the Austrian cowards started sucking up to their communist masters and got better food and housing. Also, I understand the separatist tendencies among the Alsatians and Luxemburgers, because they have had their own separate idenitty for a long time but, as you correctly mentioned, the Austrians were very eager to join up. The "Der Fuhrer" regiment of the 2nd SS was entirely Austrian, as were the mountain divisions, as were the likes of Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Eduard Roshmann (featured in "Odessa file" film), Silverster Stadler of the 9th SS, Otto Skorzeny etc. So much for "victims"

I wasn't aware of that, but then again, they are basically the same as Austrians dialect wise. Austria is really an extension of Bavaria in customs and dialect. Besides, the Bavarians generally look different the majority of Germans, they are darker haired, stockier and rounder faced than those blonde Germaic types further north. I think they were conquered and Germanized pre Germans

@shitonMOHAMMAD Yes very much that I think a party even holds that it wants Bavaria to become independent and even when the unified-German Empire was formed in 1871 you still even had the "Kingdom of Bavaria" in it and it was only because of the Franco-Prussian War that Bavaria became part of the German Empire. Austrians now don't feel German though you will be so hard pushed to find an Austrian today admit deep down their German, can't blame them though.
