  • Ben Kingsley has a most wonderful voice. He is the perfect person to play Feste. I could listen to that voice for hours.

  • @TheScheiss 'descending'??? :O GRAMMAR! ;)

  • Four people are uncultured swine.

  • I am playing Viola in a thirty-minute version of Twelfth Night. But I do love Feste.

  • Every time i see Imelda i see Umbridge. its quite a shock not to see her terrorizing...

  • how come feste sounds all indian?

  • @Nirshan30 Hehehee, I think he's exaggerating the accent here. Ben Kinglsey's actually of indian descending.

    Real name Krishna Bhanji-.

  • This is Trevor Nunn's production isn't it? Its rather urgent :P

  • hey guys if you type wallaby17171 feste into the search bar you can see me perform my last song. I fuckin loved playing feste the jester and just wanted some of you guys to check it out. It's a high school shakespeare company thats lasted for 37 years.

  • @festmeable You "fucking loved playnig Feste"? Nice language, there, you filthy troll. Your site must be some Israeli porn trash. Go away, oven dodger.

  • It gives a very echo to the seat where love is throned!

One of the most brilliantly directed parts of this scene has to be after that last line - sung with such unbearable sincerity and true anger at the acknowledgment - 'Youth's a stuff will not endure', when the song stops and Maria turns away and Feste bites his thumb and everyone is so utterly exposed.

I think that might be, for me, the most powerful part of this film.

That or 'My father had a daughter loved a man'. Ahh wreck my heart!

  • hhahaha i love the part 0:35 where toby goes "AND MALVOLIO~" something or other

  • I FRIGGAN LOOOOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!

  • @GrlwhoKnowSummat Truly - this was the best version.

  • @ThusSpakeDenise woa, was there another one???

  • TT^TT I love thee. *-*

  • O mistress mine, where are you roaming? O, stay and hear; your true love's coming, That can sing both high and low: Trip no further, pretty sweeting; Journeys end in lovers meeting, Every wise man's son doth know. What is love? 'tis not hereafter; Present mirth hath present laughter; What's to come is still unsure: In delay there lies no plenty; Then come kiss me, sweet and twenty, Youth's a stuff will not endure.

  • as gods secret commandment said "thoust shall not be idiots!"

  • I love when Ben Kingsly is singing during this scene. His first song is just BEAUTIFUL, but he looked like he was really having a lot of fun during the short little part afterward. Anyone know what they were saying?

  • Journeys end and lovers meeting, every wise man's son doth know.

  • I'm 14, and I saw this written in the London Underground Poetry Book.

I didn't even know it was an actual song, but I memorized it anyway and it led me to start reading (not to mention falling in love) with Shakespeare.

So thank you, Feste! Your one song has changed me.

  • I love Feste. He's one of my favorite Shakespearean characters EVER. Ben Kingsley did a lovely job playing him.

  • shakespeare...the best screenwriter of all time lol

  • At this part , I wondered what happened to Orsino ' s arm . It was broken at the beginning of the movie . Did it heal ? o:

  • i did twelfth night for my GCE 'O'Levels English Literature and it is truly one of the best literature play I've ever read

  • lol my class is doing this play... any ideas on good theme songs? last year we did king lear and used viva la vida by coldplay

  • Sir Andrew is just an idiot!

  • Shakespeare himself must of hired Sir Ben Kingsley!!

  • I saw this at the Duke of York theatre in London on Tuesday.....it was really good. Richard Wilson played Malvolio. James Fleet was fab as Sir Andrew! Nothing beats this film though, this is my favourite Shakepeare film by far. Such a beautiful song, but I adore the version of 'Come away death' in this film. Its such a beautiful tune!

  • I'm Olivia

  • I luv Feste he is a very wise fool <3 <3

  • Beautiful version of the song, much more melancholy than the contemporary setting.

Ben Kingsley is great as Feste.

  • Yay Feste!

  • this song is beautiful. it is my favorite in the entire play. when my class watched the movie we were all joking about. but when this song came on everyone shut up and they apriciated what is possibly one of the most amazing pieces of music ever made.

  • I ve seen this in a school play and the song was 100 times better :/

  • Very sweet and contagious, i' faith. LOL

  • Tis better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit

  • what is love? Tis not hereafter

    Present mirth hath present laughter.

  • beautiful voice from imelda staunton

  • I love this play. Thanks for posting it.

  • How is his name pronounced? Feh-steh? Feh-stay? Feh-stee? Fahst-food? No, wait a minute...

  • Fest - E

  • i always thought it was more like fest-aye as opposed to fest-ee

  • no, it's fest-ay.

  • I love how this Feste sang the songs. Charming. Thanks for posting.

  • Yeah, I felt the same! It was kind of weird because I wanted they to kiss, but she was wearing that mustache and there was an atmosphere with Feste singing... It's awesome, I think that is the best part.

  • I couldn't find the clip, but I thought the scene was funny when Feste sings to Orsino and Viola (as Cesario) and the two of them almost kiss, with Viola still in her Cesario garb.

My whole class was watching it, and we all held our breath as they almost kissed.

  • This film is awesome! I love it Shakespeare is a genius!!

  • Thou speakst the truth, good fellow.

  • The boy next to Viola looks like a girl too.

  • i ve been looking everywhere for the dvd in my town and its NOWHERE to be found!!

  • order it off amazon...it's cheap too. that's the only place i could find it.

  • Yeah, my dad's getting me it for Christmas, i asked him where i could get it months ago as i was studying it for GCSE English, and he said I'll get it off amazon for you

  • she means that the person who sang the song last night for them is not there, aka feste

  • I'm sorry, I´m afraid I didn't understand you. When he asked "How dost thou like this tune?", she answers: "It gives a very echo to the seat where love is throned." I wrote before what she says when he enters and says "That old and antique song..."

  • Well, I' tell you, I unserstand "He is no here, so please your lordship..." and then, something like "push sing it." I know it makes no sense, but it sounds like that. Anyway, what I put below is what the script says.

  • I believe the next line is "so who should sing it?"

  • I have no idea. I would not be sure of what she is saying, but it's possible. That is not exactely what the script says but fits perfectly.

  • I really love this movie!!!

Well, she must say "He is no here, so please your lordship, that should sing it", but I don't understand that. Actually, I seldom understand what she says, because she speaks too fast. It's a pity, she is a wonderful actress

  • Is she saying, in effect, "He who should sing it is not here." ??

  • quality film malvolio is such a tool

  • just saw this movie for the first time this past weekend and it's bloody marvelous...but then again, I love GOOD film version of Shakespeare's plays (skip the 1995 & 1996 versions of "Richard III" & "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet")

  • Can anyone understand what she says when he asked her what she thinks of the song?

  • It gives the very echo to the seat where Love is throned.

  • Is there a cd for this available?

  • they're all so funny! i NEED to buy this film!

Now Thats What I Call Poetry !!
  • i come to you in yellow stockings, cross gartered!!!!! ha ha!!!

  • Oh dear Lord. I saw this back in 1997 methinks! And to think that 10 years later to watch Feste and Maria (or rather, Dolores Umbridge of Harry Potter!) singing this lovely song! (^_^)v Twelfth Night rocks, and so does Harry Potter! LOL

  • Any way we can increase the volume?! I looooove the duet between Feste and whatshername!!

  • thank you for posting this :) this is one of my favourite movies. I am addicted ;)

  • Excellent, thanks so much for posting it! Stevens is wicked gorgeous and Kingsley has the most amazing voice--not to mention he's a brilliant actor.

Do you have the last song of the movie? Its hard to find.

  • This movie is one of my favourites!!I love it!

  • Do you have any idea where i can find the three songs feste sings in the play such asthe rain it raineth every day and come away death ?

  • I've been looking for a copy of the song, too, or trying to make one--if I manage, I'll hook you up--but I'm pretty sure the songs would run by the titles of the poems; for example, "The Rain It Raineth Every Day" is actually Shakespeare's "When That I Was And A Little Tiny Boy."

  • Awsum Dude = Feste...he rocks :P

  • IM doing this in class, its a lovely, play.<3

  • Staunton has a great voice, its a lovely song.

  • Orsino is shallow!! and Feste is a goth-looking fella...Maria and Toby have a thing too eek ><
