Overall, I think it's an excellent work and his trip is an accomplishment he deserves credit for.
I didn't much care for the bit, however, when he says he doesn't expect anyone to follow in his footsteps but rather we should just be content with seeing it all through his eyes.
As someone who has travelled much and had some unique experiences myself, I can say that one's own desire to make a journey, if it's strong enough,can many times suffice one to the ends of the earth,

Am just in the middle of the book just now (having read In Siberia a few months ago) and enjoying it, especially as I've travelled part of the way described.
As an aspiring travel writer I am bitterly jealous of Thubron's amazing writing and ability to paint some of the wonderful places I'd visited far better than I'll be able to!

Colin is not just cultured, he is a dam nice bloke! He's avuncular and writes as a scholar but his heart is in the right place. I've journied with Colin. It was an education and honour!

Interesting to see Colin Thubron in the flesh. He is a masterful writer. I recommend his "In Siberia" very strongly.
