@greencoveredbridge little late on this answer haha, but they would rather cross pollinate in order to increase the chances of genetic variation. This allows different traits among the species to intermingle and bring forth new generations which have a various mix of genes in them which in turn contributes to the success of that species and is the premis of natural selection.
So....You can't just stick a pinecone in the ground and have it grow?
