Well, Ninja were commonly employed as assassins. While it differed greatly in what tactics they used - (depends on the school of Ninjutsu) they all revolved around speed, stealth and surgical strikes rather than brute force.
In contrast, the Samurai were the frontline warriors. Troops who would take the fight straight to the enemy head on.
Both have excellent techniques and are considered some of the best warriors of their ages.
@SellswordCC Well that's the thing most people overlook, you don't become an old man in that kind of profession without being scary-good at what you do.
Now, you have to realize, this is FULL OF SHIT. In reality, a REAL ninja raid - not a scene trying desperately to make look those pseudo Saigo and Brunet look like SoulCalibur characters - would have wiped out AT LEAST the main objectives. This movie is a failure as historical fiction, even below Braveheart standards, and only retarded weeaboos and flea-infested uyos like this stinking piece of shit.
Look very carefully at the background from 2:18 - 2:22
Did they mean to show Tom Cruise stabbing the guy at that moment before the kid even engaged the Ninja, but he stabs the guy later on from 2:25 - 2:28 (note thg kid is already fully engaged in the fight) at that time.
I wonder did they mean to do that. I noticed it a long time ago, but never thought much about it, now I'm curious lol.
@RashawnBlue1 No. It's just a filming mistake. They filmed both the moment he stabbed the guy and the moment the kid was fighting at the same time with two cameras. I guess they accidentally caught Tom on film.
what the hell is said at the end. i agree with everyone, itz so fuckin powerful. i mean like ive heard powerful things bein said but what was said at the end just topped them all.
I'd take the mute old man and that husky, crotchety bearded cat to battle ANY DAY ... they take on two and three at a time! And Ujio ... need I say more. The battle cry is the SICKEST!!!
The mysterious nature of the ninja has long captured popular imagination in Japan, and later the rest of the world. Ninjas figure prominently in folklore and legend, and as a result it is often difficult to separate historical fact from myth. Some legendary abilities include invisibility, walking on water, and control over natural elements. The ninja is also prevalent in popular culture, appearing in many forms of entertainment media.
These writings revealed an assortment of philosophies, religious beliefs, their application in warfare, as well as the espionage techniques that form the basis of the ninja's art. The word ninjutsu would later come to describe a wide variety of practices related to the ninja.
Following the unification of Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate, the ninja descended again into obscurity. However, in the 17th and 18th centuries, manuals such as the Bansenshukai (1676) - often centered around Chinese military philosophy - appeared in significant numbers.
The word shinobi did not exist to describe a ninja-like agent until the 15th century, and it is unlikely that spies and mercenaries prior to this time were seen as a specialized group. In the unrest of the Sengoku period (15th - 17th centuries), mercenaries and spies for hire arose out of the Iga and Kōga regions of Japan, and it is from these clans that much of later knowledge regarding the ninja is inferred.
The origin of the ninja is obscure and difficult to determine, but can be surmised to be around the 14th century. However, the antecedents to the Ninja may have existed as early as the Heian and early Kamakura eras. Few written records exist to detail the activities of the ninja.
In his Buke Myōmokushō, military historian Hanawa Hokinoichi writes of the ninja:
"They travelled in disguise to other territories to judge the situation of the enemy, they would inveigle their way into the midst of the enemy to discover gaps, and enter enemy castles to set them on fire, and carried out assassinations, arriving in secret."
A ninja or shinobi was a covert agent or mercenary of feudal Japan specializing in unorthodox arts of war. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, as well as open combat in certain situations. The ninja, using covert methods of waging war, were contrasted with the samurai, who had strict rules about honor and combat.
among the samurai casualties i think they're alot more wounded more than killed but still heay losses but beat them candy ass ninjas, by this time they're not cool they're only hired guns
the next scene makes me laugh after this when Katsumoto says 'A perfect blossom is a rare thing, you could spend your whole life looking for one and it would not be a wasted life' because actually it probably would be a wasted life
Ninja were mercenaries. They were artists in stealth, specialists in the disreputable—in espionage, infiltration, and sudden death. –James Clavell, “Shogun”
Actually these ninjas are very good, perhaps the best at that time. Look at 2:49. Cruise is good then but can't fight that one. Only the samurais are better.
actually ninjas r better than that but yes one to one fight sanurai is superior, but the hard work is locate the ninja, they have so many tricks and abilityu to be like fighting against na transparent opponent..
In actuality the ninja was much more than an assassin, he was a spy, a master of disguise and espionage, a special operative of the feudal Japanese world.
In a one-on-one fight vs a samurai they would likely lose, however, due to this being Hollywood, they send tens of them in where only one would have been needed.
@jobe5514 i think the rest of the ninjas wer backup if plan A failed, which did...n the sniping on the rooftop wen everybody was caught offguard with katsumoto fooling arnd on the stage was a pretty good oppurtunity 2 kill him...but i'd still choose killing katsumoto while hes asleep...
@madzz87 i'd have to agree with you there,or poison the flowers on the trees around his temple so when the wind blew it carried the powder with it killing him in the process
Good scene but Ninjas were too under-rated here... I mean, in a 1 v 1 A Samurai is better, but not that better like here. Goos scene.. lets say, 7 samurais= 10 ninjas
Ninjas were only assassins ... their garb, their weapons, everything are just for night assassinations. They blend into the night, they throw pointy things and kill a target. Samurai are actual warriors.. in a 1v1in the daytime I believe a samurai would win only because he has armor and is an experienced warrior. In the night he would only have to find out where the ninja is but I'd still bet on the samurai.
@BlackOps78321 They were more than that, but thats what they want you to think ok...don't get me wrong but your argument sounds very simplystic, are you american by any chance?
@subroto81 Meh, what? I can barely even understand you and it seems obvious that you're a little dumb (and also racist / ignorant) from the start. Creeping thru the night to kill a general is different than the 'art of the sword' (precision killing with a katana) and actual battlefield warfare. As much as movies and perhaps your heritage would like you to think that ninjas are 'elite' they are only really assassins (even though its always been considred Japan's best / coolest ancient warrior).
@BlackOps78321 well the only thing that this whole fight scene could even be close to accurate is the invasion of Koga and niga the ninja's hometowns... there was probably alot of this kind of fighting when the samurai super invades those towns but other than that its stupid...
to be honest though...ninja are there for assassination only...people may think that samurai are better than ninja but actually they both are good on their own way so i would say that one is better than another...
@johncena271 no the ninjas lost cuz samurai are better at fighting. which is why they used guerrilla tactics like surprise attacks. notice in the beginning the ninjas were dominating thats cuz they had surprise. but towards the end the samurai started to dominate, thats cuz they are better trained.
Too much blood and violence ? Hey, that's a movie about the birth of Modern Japan.
All countries were born not in the alcohol from costly banquets, nor in the silk worn by some haughty and insgnificant nobles, but in the rough clothes worn by soldiers who shed their blood througout history.
So a film about the birth of a country can't be anything but somehow violent.
@Zak4421 Katsumoto was the Last Samurai, not Tom Cruise. Cruise's character simply fought alongside Katsumoto. It would've been ridiculous for an American to be a samurai.
Ninjas are trained assassins man. You wouldn't call a modern day assassin that snipes his target from afar a bitch so why would you a ninja. their job is to kill and that's what they do. :/
Thats why you buy the Fall of the Samurai DLC and use a gatling gun to mow the ninjas down (hahahaha Shogun 2: Total War reference :)

@rukiahentai313
Ninjas are trained assassins man. You wouldn't call a modern day assassin that snipes his target from afar a bitch so why would you a ninja. their job is to kill and that's what they do. :/

This scene is a testament to the fighting spirit of the Japenese people. The Japanese people knew all about the art of fighting.
