Edie Brickell's style has been imitated muchly. Note if you care this: goo . gl / 09v6q Because of reasons per my profile, I'm interested in knowing where on or near the Syracuse University campus she was singing when Ronnie Kovic realized those who would deny equality (maybe freedom too) were fighting those who would deny freedom (maybe equality too.) just leave a place here for my knowing then go there and rediscover that
This was the first version of the song I ever heard. I was just a kid when it came out and I was in love with it. Later on my mom introduced me to Dylan. It changed my life.
Hard rain is falling, and will fall even harder until my mission is over. Oh if i knew my mission i'd do it, My dust would be blowin in the wind... i am not allowed to die till its done. ive survived too many near deaths. Now im scared to keep living. Its hard.

ummm why has no one ever made one of these for She from shooting rubberbands Its a great song AND A GREAT ALBUM i see none of those songs on here. WTF if i knew how to make a vid I would but I don"t so some one please do IT!!!!!
THE definitive cover. Although the notion that a cover can't improve on a Dylan original is quite absurd, in THIS particularly hauntingly lyrical piece, there's no real comparing; it's apples and oranges. BOTH (original & cover) are masterful classics. Greatest praise, though, goes to the writer of the melody and, especially, the poignant lyrics. One flaw of the cover: not a single word of those lyrics should have been cut. Still: a powerful moment in a powerful film of a powerful true story.
@sideburnbasher mmm..u sure? Let see. 2nd world war: inglorious victory only thank to atomic bomb. Corea : dishonourable armistice. Vietnam: dreadful defeat. Iraqi 1: fear for consequences and stop. Iraqi 2 : escape from death desert. Afgh: war against ghosts. The only war won by US is genocid of native american people using rifles and smallpox infected blanket against bows and arrows. People without history, land of crass ignorance, exporters of fake democracy, YOU ARE third world.
Your country started two world wars and were the actual Nazis. Germany has to do what we tell you to because you're a warlike and genocidal people. What kind of drugs were you taking whan you posted that delusional and hypocritical drivel about the US here, boy?
Oh, looky here, Austrian? You must be so proud of your native sons, Adolf Hitler, Kurt Waldheim, Georg Haider, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Austria: the birthplace of Nazis.
I think it's important to draw a line between a cover and an interpretation. This, like Jason Mraz's and Joan Baez's versions, is pretty much a cover; yeah, there will be some stylistic variations, but basically, it's the same song played on different instruments/voices. On the other hand, Leon Russell and Bryan Ferry's studio versions are interpretations: they keep or amplify the original's edge, but give it a very different personality. At any rate, one can pick a favorite without condemning.
¡El tema de Dylan, majestuosa letra, pero la versión que hace la Brickell, te paran los pelos, es alucinante e impresionante esta tía, me fascina, buena canción, gracias por subirla, saludos!!
how could anyone say this is better than dylan's? Sure she can sing but this has no emotion or feel...at least with dylans version you get it,you feel the apocalyptic theme.
This version does an awful job of portraying the emotion of the actual lyrics GET REAL
Jaredf921. Didn't stretch a syllable in what I corresponded to you. What really irks me is that Sony has taken down the sites of Dylan's live performances of The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll. I suggested a boycott of all Sony products on that particular song site until they change their tune concerning what's available on you tube. Sony, is where the green is the color and money is their intention . . . and I write my words well before I start a typing! Screw them. Agree with me people.
The touching endearments to the "darling young one" sound even more beautiful when sung by a woman. I think these lovely words are more suggestive of a mother's love than a father's. Though the average father can obviously have such feelings for his boy, he is not very likely to express them directly. Or am I being out of date and unfair to modern fathers? Blame it on Edie. Her voice just tears my heart out.
Jaredf921. Thanks for the compliment. That means my therapist is correct in that I have a fantastic photographic memory. It has to be close to 25 years since I've seen that album cover. Wait until you become my age and try to read the liner notes on a CD or tape. Good luck on that. My sons have all my old albums. Tapes have become dinosaurs and I haven't inserted a CD in nearly a year. Just wish I had an ipod when I craved ear candy in the craziest way imaginable while uh.. uh.. uh.. traveling.
This is a great cover of an even greater song. Poignantly picturesque. Every sentence could be a song. That is the ultimate claim any song could ever attain. Timeless to a tee.
@pmoyer50 hey-- I know you got that from Dylan's liner notes from Freewheelin'-- he made that exact observation... but it's all good. Amazing, timeless song.
@xtallyx1 You're a goddamn fool. Dylan has far more of a sense of emotional delivery than any vocalist, anywhere. His delivery of the lines serves the song far more than edie's voice.

Bob Dylan is the most copied author of all times, which makes him one of the greatest, hell, I grew up on his songs, and now my daugter listens to them with me
This is a primary example of why Bob Dylan is known as a fantasic song writer. The lyrics on this is without a doubt incredible. Edie did it very well. A great song writer herself.
i love this song in all of its entirety no matter whos point of view...i especially like the original by bob dylan! i actually like that one more because its an original and i love his voice...
This makes me want to pick up the guitar. Edie's version of this song gives me bohemian goosebumps - one of the best songs, and the lyrics are heartfelt to say the least.
REMINDS ME OF MY MOTHERS BIRTHDAY..[KATHRYN ROSE DOWD]....404...THE SAME DAY MARTIN LUTHER KING WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD....KETCHUP....lol.....OR TIFANNY ROBERTS the gold medalist BIRDAY.....THE FILIPINA FOOTBALL GODDESS....505.....cinco de mayo indepants day
Too bad this great song with lyrics so relevant today and the urban conditions we live in was associated with Tom (Snooze) Cruise and associated therefore with the Viet Nam war through this movie, there is not one stanza mentioning the Viet Nam war, listen to this song as you walk, or drive, through any low income area of any city where Dylan described the environment of 12 misty mountains, 7 sad forests, 12 dead oceans, walked 6 crooked hwys., wave that could drown the world, Viet Nam, not
listen the to th opening lyrics and then yo will know why it pertains to the story chief. its about a mother realizing that her son has started to experience the hardships of life(whatever they may happen to be) and there is no longer anything she can do to help him. THAT is why this song is used for this movie. a young man went to war(who cares if it was vietnam) he has seen and experienced the harshest of realities, and there is nothing his mother or anyone else can do to rescue him from them
im well aware this is a bob dylan cover. someone can sing from other points of view. in this song there is a parent sing to a child, and then the child sings back to the parent. bob dylan is literally neither of them. however, being that he was a young man when he wrote this, i felt he related more to the child in the song.....and, the words of the parent seem to be more of a mothers words.... to me atleast.
¡Qué versión tan bella!, la letra tan estremecedora de Dylan y la interpretación de Edie Brickell hacen mi canción favorita. Gracias por subirla a youtube.

Great song. No matter who sings it. Each artist brings their own interpretation to the table. The important part in my opinion is the text.

This makes me want to pick up the guitar. Edie's version of this song gives me bohemian goosebumps - one of the best songs, and the lyrics are heartfelt to say the least.

I agree with your analysis except the mother part. This is a Bob Dylan cover.

im well aware this is a bob dylan cover. someone can sing from other points of view. in this song there is a parent sing to a child, and then the child sings back to the parent. bob dylan is literally neither of them. however, being that he was a young man when he wrote this, i felt he related more to the child in the song.....and, the words of the parent seem to be more of a mothers words.... to me atleast.

¡Qué versión tan bella!, la letra tan estremecedora de Dylan y la interpretación de Edie Brickell hacen mi canción favorita. Gracias por subirla a youtube.
