Because the sting is so painful, some people who are moderately far from shore end up drowning from going into shock. The pain is so excruciating that they can't swim back to shore to save themselves. I wonder if those people are counted in the number of fatalities from box jellyfish.
@fireboltttt I know, right! Ah well, that's thrill seeking for you...plus there are people like the crocodile hunter (RIP Steve!) and others. But hey, whatever floats their boats. Instant death...kinda like people who do base jumping, bull riding, street luging, etc...HAHA humans can be weird
Thanks for uploading these videos! They are incredibly fascinating creatures and I just wanna know more and more about them! Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it recently discovered that these creatures actually have not just one, but 4 brains?
This guys are absolutely NUTS!!!!!! I don't care if they're touching the "safe" part... "F" that! There is NO way I'd go anywhere NEAR a box jellyfish!! Kudos to these dudes! Much braver than I am... :)
the thing is, they go on and on about how the box jellyfish is SOOOO dangerous, then they go pick it up!!! I KNOW they're only holding the bell but at 1:51 it looks like he's touching the stinger. I mean, why not ATLEAST wear gloves!!!
Yep, I thought the same thing, and then one day it was my turn to handle one, & then I realised ... gloves dont give a good grip on it at all. Rubber gloves / marine gloves / sports gloves .... NONE of them are any good for picking it up. It seems counter intuitive, but its MUCH safer to handle it with bare hands because if you drop it, you kill it, and probably end up with tentacles coming off and remaining undetected in your boat or on your stingersuit, just waiting there to get you later on.
The stinging cells aren't simply to immobilize prey, but to immobilize them really quickly. A struggling shrimp is enough to damage the tissue and kill the jellyfish.
i must admit that this animal is really beautiful and fascinating, but it would scare the hell out of me to stand near it in the water. and i would never ever touch it!
but these guys seem to know what they're doing. i highly respect them.
errr i once tried that but there skin is so jellyish that it slipped out of it and finished on ym leg man that hurt and neither gloves would work sub my favourite is right they would slip out of there hands

Great, another thing to scare me shitless.
At least the death is somewhat quick.
200 seconds isn't bad considering other far more painful and lasting deaths.

what is fuck is the point wearing that suite if your not going to wear gloves

yeah, it's addicting alright.
blasphemously frightening, though.

it's still amasing that we still know so little about them and that was just a shock to know they have eyes that are advanced like ours.

What does oath mean in New Zealand? Where I'm from, the derogatory term is oaf, not oath.
HamsterSuperstar 3 years ago
I am not from NZ, but in Australia when you say fkn oath it means you are kind of 'taking an oath' that you are speaking truth.
Sorta like swearing on the bible when you take an oath of allegiance or an oath of duty or something like that.
Does that answer it 4 u ??

now i will never take a dive in australia
