Actually, they are maintained to a specific tonality so that they consistently hit the same note. If human oils from skin gets on the rocks, they can deteriorate, or accumulate, and throw off the pitch

I can't quite see what's going on, but I heard there hit with rubber mallets to create an organ effect...I'd love to witness this with my own eyes!
