I have been tired of reading simplistic theories about the persecuted Shostakovich (which is PARTLY true) based on the Testimony book and others like Ian Mc Donald (RIP) just for the sake of imagining Fantasia-like hellish cartoons while listening to his music. After all he was much more intelligent than that, he belonged to the Comunist party, which is like saying he was employed in the state in a state economy, and music is beyond words.
I know what a gadfly is. Socrates, for example, was the consummate gadfly, in the sense of one who persistently annoys or provokes others with criticism, questions, etc. But you referred to "Gadfly." Given the capitalization, I thought you were referring to some other piece.
I would have cried if he did not. Frankly, I really hoped Mahler broke the curse of the ninth. He did come close, but that...that stupid Gustav! Well, I still love Shostakovich.
2. After Shostakovich´s 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th-each getting more and more grand with their exploration of the development of the ´Soviet Aesthetic´it was expected that his 9th would be be akin to Beethoven´s. Not being suicidal Dmitri chose to write a small, short chamber symphony which was nonetheless grand on any scale.
3. He shows his lighter side as a comedian. The world listens with total admiration.
first one i'm hearing it. i'm a visual artist and i've in the last years inspirational treasures in classical music, especially with classics...now i'm studying biographies and symphonies of everyone listening them more and more times. I've heard very good word about this nineth symphony...hope it will be cool..
By the way , this symphony was never censored or removed.the fourth symphony and lady macbeth of... had to be withdrawn due to reasons that we all know.
"....censured the symphony for its "ideological weakness" and its failure to "reflect the true spirit of the people of the Soviet Union"." I would like to know how they came to this determination of "ideological weakness" (?) factors. And how does one define what the "true spirit" is when the population is being told what to do, what to say and when to do what? There is no collection freedom under a totalitarian government.
This is great imusiciki. Thank you for the videos and notes.

pas d'accord...de côté interprète le tempo est très juste et l'intellectualisme n'a pas de place ici...
le tempo c'est comme la justesse dans la musique et chaque note a une seule place fixe !
ok, c'est discutable , mais ça favorise la communication ;-)

What a mind.....
I wish I could think like he did.

Didn't Shostakovich get into trouble with this work? It wasn't serious and grandiose enough for Uncle Joe's taste, I seem to remember.

the orchestra's development of the piccolo's melody at 5:34 is Simpsonesque

Since it was made to celebrate the Russian victory over the Nazis, it was like he was saying FU to Hitler

he was saying FU Stalin too!

Great to see him and Britten together! (the other man on the photo.)
I wrote an article about Stalin and Shostakovitch. "The King and his Jester"! (it's in Swedish. Published in journal Musik&Ljudteknik.)
ellandelachapelle 2 years ago
Is there an English translation of your article? Do the terms 'king' and 'jester' refer to Shost. and Britten? If so, who is who?
ilkinond 2 years ago
Eh well - - - I don't think Britten was Stalin! (if you see what I mean?)
As far as I know it hasn't been translated. (I may be wrong. The person who later wrote a book about Stalin and Shostakovitch may have read it!)

What's Gadfly?
Jitpring 3 years ago
A "gadlfy" is an old slang not really used today. It represents someone who is loose, unkept...like a whore or something.
Someone to upset the "status quo"

This is a cool symphony TO ME for 3 reasons.
1. It mocks Prokofiev´s first Symphony.
2. After Shostakovich´s 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th-each getting more and more grand with their exploration of the development of the ´Soviet Aesthetic´it was expected that his 9th would be be akin to Beethoven´s.
