I can tell you almost any music major in college will tell you kenny G's smooth jazz sucks! He uses circular breathing which screws up your tone quality a lot because you have to puff your cheeks. You NEVER EVER puff your cheeks when you play a wind instrument. Now I am not saying I am better than him cause if you hear his bebop stuff it actually sounds good!

He is not a band directors dream student. If he was in the CSUN I(california state university northrigde in Los Angeles) jazz program Matt harris would not be calling him his dream student. CSUN has one of the best Jazz programs in the states. Matt harris is a jazz piano player who has played with legends like drummer buddy rich and trumpeter Maynard Fergueson. Ask any music major they will tell you his tone quality is crap!
You don't wanna play like him. Then you will be hated by the jazz community! Just get a tone quality that you think is good don't try and be like someone. Music is all about expressing yourself. If you wanna be a sax player you can't just stick to playing instrumental versions of pop tunes. You have to be able to improvise and play Jazz stanards like coltrane charlie parker miles davis and etc. Listen to guys like coltrane and michael brecker. I met Kenny G in person back in 1991 after he did the Morning Show in Manhattan. I met his wife, who was pregnant, and we were about to take a picture together. Kenny saw us, and ran over to us from his limo saying, "Wait! Hold on, let me get in there with you guys, so people don't think she left me for you!" LOL. The man not only has a great sense of humor, he is humble, and when people clap for him on stage, he points to his band mates and has everybody clap for them as well.

Kenny G played this song at my wedding. He was dressed in a white tuxedo, hair plaited back with a hankerchief in his pocket. He played this song, while people danced on the lawn and were swimming in the pool. There was lots of beautiful food including pizza, wine, dips and Kenny G's mother made a wonderful pasta full of spaghetti rigalitino sauce. Wonderful night was had by all. And in case you think this is a joke - ask the man himself, the one and only - SIR KENNY G-String.
just so everyone knows, with kenny g there isnt ever words to his music. he plays the the soprano sax or english horn, whichever it may be but he doesnt have words he just plays his instrument to every song. just so everyone is clear on that. and some of his music is slower and more romantic and some of his music is faster pased and it doesnt sound as romantic but its still good, dont get me wrong he is always a good musician i always love his work.

Kenny G, along with many other misunderstood "smooth jazz" saxophonists, has never claimed to be a jazz musician. Just because it has "jazz" in its name, it doesn't mean that its a type of traditional jazz at all. A GRAPEfruit doesn't have GRAPES in it, and it's dumb to think that what Kenny is trying to do is play jazz. He's excellent at what he does, and that is to write and play beautiful melodies and please a crowd. If you don't like it, then go listen to traditional jazz, simple as that.
i am a sax player and i dont particualarly care for Kenny G's stuff, but lets be real here. He is smart about what he does and he is rich because of it. I go to school for music and I am sick of all these copycat jazz players that just play licks and dont sound original. If you cant be original, then dont knock the G for making some bucks!
there are different types of jazz just like all other music if most of a song is done by a singing instrument I E sax flute etc. it can be called jazz then from there it can be broken down into classic jazz lite jazz or anything of that nature plus i followed K G sence i was young and me being into jazz and gospel and not hip hop, WHAT??? i still don't like hip hop and its allaround me oh well said enough bye
Some of Kenny G's songs, including this one, wouldn't necessarily be considered jazz due to it's lack of the swing feel, and the slow tempo, but what matters is he's a great instrumentalist and the song sounds great.
see that is where people mess up...."Make" is not the right word. He hardly writes any of his own music, that is why people are not every fond of him. He is amazing saxophone player, but he makes his money off other peoples songs.
Amazing saxophone player? He calls what he plays "jazz" yet he has no idea the concepts and harmonic structure of jazz - his tone is incredibly bright and edgy and he's only well liked because the majority of people don't know what a jazz soprano saxophone sounds like. Coltrane, Parker, Potter, Rollins - I could list tons of sax players who could smoke him in jazz. I won't dispute hes successful at least in terms of money, but his audience is people who like deep, pop sounding music not jazz.
kenny doesn't claim to be coltrane and he doesn't claim to be brecker and he doesn't claim to be sanborn. All the kenny g haters and the kenny g fans need to accept him for who he is, a pop instrumentalist. Whether or not you like his music or even the sound of the soprano sax, you cannot deny that the man has talent and dedication.
the problem with a lot of the controversy over kenny g is that so many people think "Kenny plays saxophone BUT WAIT..... he's not playing jazz!" Of course he's not. I'm a kenny g fan, but I'll be the first to admit that most, if not all of his music, is not jazz (the only possible exception being gettin on the step off his album "the moment") but he doesn't claim to be jazz. Sax can play classical, funk, and anything else really.

just so everyone knows, with kenny g there isnt ever words to his music. he plays the the soprano sax or english horn, whichever it may be but he doesnt have words he just plays his instrument to every song. just so everyone is clear on that. and some of his music is slower and more romantic and some of his music is faster pased and it doesnt sound as romantic but its still good, dont get me wrong he is always a good musician i always love his work.

Kenny G, along with many other misunderstood "smooth jazz" saxophonists, has never claimed to be a jazz musician. Just because it has "jazz" in its name, it doesn't mean that its a type of traditional jazz at all. A GRAPEfruit doesn't have GRAPES in it, and it's dumb to think that what Kenny is trying to do is play jazz. He's excellent at what he does, and that is to write and play beautiful melodies and please a crowd. If you don't like it, then go listen to traditional jazz, simple as that.

i am a sax player and i dont particualarly care for Kenny G's stuff, but lets be real here. He is smart about what he does and he is rich because of it. I go to school for music and I am sick of all these copycat jazz players that just play licks and dont sound original. If you cant be original, then dont knock the G for making some bucks!

there are different types of jazz just like all other music if most of a song is done by a singing instrument I E sax flute etc. it can be called jazz then from there it can be broken down into classic jazz lite jazz or anything of that nature plus i followed K G sence i was young and me being into jazz and gospel and not hip hop, WHAT??? i still don't like hip hop and its allaround me oh well said enough bye

Jazz is what it is.
Some of Kenny G's songs, including this one, wouldn't necessarily be considered jazz due to it's lack of the swing feel, and the slow tempo, but what matters is he's a great instrumentalist and the song sounds great.

Amazing saxophone player? He calls what he plays "jazz" yet he has no idea the concepts and harmonic structure of jazz - his tone is incredibly bright and edgy and he's only well liked because the majority of people don't know what a jazz soprano saxophone sounds like. Coltrane, Parker, Potter, Rollins - I could list tons of sax players who could smoke him in jazz. I won't dispute hes successful at least in terms of money, but his audience is people who like deep, pop sounding music not jazz.

All the kenny g haters and the kenny g fans need to accept him for who he is, a pop instrumentalist. Whether or not you like his music or even the sound of the soprano sax, you cannot deny that the man has talent and dedication.

the problem with a lot of the controversy over kenny g is that so many people think "Kenny plays saxophone BUT WAIT..... he's not playing jazz!" Of course he's not. I'm a kenny g fan, but I'll be the first to admit that most, if not all of his music, is not jazz (the only possible exception being gettin on the step off his album "the moment") but he doesn't claim to be jazz. Sax can play classical, funk, and anything else really.

Umm I believe Kenny g has won only ONE grammy but I don't care about that. Kenny's horn sounds like a kazoooooooo and even though Marion or George never sold 100 million albums, who cares. neither one of them had the nerve to overdub over louis armstrong. Kenny's music belongs in the trash so the trashman can pick it up. If you want to continue to listen to kenny g fine but also know that he is NOT JAZZ AND IS INSTRUMENTAL POP.
