I really love how Pat was improvising at the time this was recorded. He has a totally unique approach to the instrument, as well as a fully distinctive voice. All the guys out there sweep-picking and shredding should listen to this - it's all about feeling and emotion, and not about being the fastest gun in the west.
Does anyone know why they got rid of Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb? I miss their sound in the Group, the fretless sound and the riding cymbal of Gottlieb greatly contributed to what is called the Metheny sound as we can watch in this video.....
I have no idea, but I tend to agree with you. Egan was & is a superior bass player, and I mean no disrespect to Steve Rodby, but he's such a middle-of-the-road player, brings nothing remarkable to the group. Paul Wertico was a fantastic element to the 80s and 90s Metheny sound ,and Antonio Sanchez is an absolute monster...but Danny did bring a great energy to the early Group.
i would have to agree as well.. egan in particular, brought another kind of lyricism to the overall sound. Gottlieb was excellent but I would have to go with Wertico overall on that side of things.
forgotten how god this track is .thxQ

The bassist is Mark Egan, actually working together with John Abercrombie and Dan Gottlieb (dr) again.
