Screamo is an evolution of the "Emo" genre that started in the late 80's in DC, usually with more distorted, emotional vocals. The instrumentals are typically somewhat melodic, if simplistic, and revolve around conventional chords. It's more similar to pop-punk than it is to heavy metal, with the exception of vocals.

Defining this as screamo would be incorrect.
