I've seen instances where zen masters stand under the waterfall without moving for large tracts of time. Not all of us are zen masters. :)
I am sure as long as there is some kind of benefit to be had in the practice, the amount of time spent cleansing the spirit will vary, but will still be fruitful no matter the length of time.
the people participating in a morning purification (misogi) for an aikido seminar. some do it for the spirituality and some just for fun. it's a great experience.
