  • Ian Thomas original song

  • This song came out in 1979.

  • @shannonb082905 You're right, but that was the original version by the Canadian Ian Thomas Band. This is Santana's cover from 1982, which was a big international hit, just like their take on Ian Thomas' "Hold On."

  • Amazing cover of a great Canadian song.Timeless.

  • Simply one of the great songs, ever.

  • Looks like my ex. But Nobody ever LOVED HIM like I did. Only thing He ever gave me was a BEAUTIFUL daughter.

  • @EXTIQUE I was also class of 1986, rock on man, they don't make music like they used to this rap crap or this pop bull royaly sucks, today it's about the money and the spotlight, back in the days it's about the talent it meant something, wonder why im still stuck in the past, 50's through the 80's is the best era for anything, anyways rock on man,

    The '80s rock!!!

  • santana d best '

  • I was searching for this music... finaly I found it... a very great and special song... 1982.

  • @pj672010 Thank you so much for info, and sorry that I got it wrong. Actually I was a bit suspicious when I got my info from a friend that it was Greg Walker, because it didn't really sound like him. Now I know why... :o)

Beautifully sung by Alex Ligertwood anyway, and once again - thx for info!

  • one classic. For all time. and it was by my time. I,m so proud.

  • Of all the songs on my iPod, this is my favourite.

Hold On - by Santana ...... rocks !

  • @cheeriosinabowl I like Put you lights on !!! just won't let any be my favorite I like most of Em !!!

  • this is one of my top jams with Carlos Santana!!! love you Carlos!!!!!!!

  • Another classic tune with Greg Walker singing so beautifully!!

Ian Thomas wrote and did the original version of this song and Santana & his musicians did such a wonderful cover of it on "Shango"(1982)!

  • Ah, when MTV was all music all day, not too many commercials, about two minutes of music news every hour, and there wasn't any rap. My college years were happy

  • One of the best to ever do it! Santana is awesome!

  • I can't decide who is creepier in this vid: the fire-tricks guy with the Michael Myers mask or the grinning zombie who is spinning the wheel of fortune. Actually, the guy in drag who replaces the hot babe at the end is the creepiest!

  • @freakyold Haha Armando.

  • one good dose of loving will straighten out your head

  • G minor, D minor, E flat ,C minor D, G minor [2x] Gminor D minor E flat B flat,D. Than the chorus is E flat, F, D,G minor E flat ,B flat, D .Thats it! listen to the song for the rythm and you got it.

  • @MrBuc128 there isn't E flat, but Eb major

  • I have always liked this song.I had actually forgotten about it untill recently. I play a little guitar [nothing spectacular] and recently I was just playing around with some chords on my acoustic when I came up with this tune.I could not figure out what it was and I kept saying what song is this I know this song. After a couple of weeks I remembered it. Santana Hold on. Great song .An often overlooked forgotten gem.

  • @MrBuc128 what are the chords i wanna learn this song it brings back memories

  • God bless that parrot!

  • was on holiday in miami in 1982, heard this song.........superb

  • One of the greatest song of the early 80's, but also one of the worst videos.

  • @GraachAhim Coke Years My Friend,The Coke Years plus Carlos is a Universal Galactic Mental Genius so if you look at the video you will get his Vibe and the somewhat Plot behind the message. All 80's video half the crew was on Coke,Qualudes,Gone into another hemisphere..LOL! There was more Love to give and less Hate..Great Times...

    Take Care,

  • ohhhhh, que horroooooooooooor!!!!!!!! no me gusta la serpiente en este video. La música sí. Tengo fobia a las serpientes, aggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Carlos Santana is more than a simple band! he really choose the best musician of the world to bring every body is great interpretations! orgullosamente de Mexico para el mundo!!

  • I don't think many of us below the Canadian border would have known of this song if Santana didn't cover it. Santana's band did a good job. I've only recently heard Ian Thomas' original version and it is basically the same arrangement. I think both versions are great. But much respect to the author, Ian Thomas. Also, I didn't know he wrote "Right Before Your Eyes" which was covered by America. Ian, if you're out there, thank you for these wonderful songs.

  • @audiopackrat Hey thanks for the Info.I never knew this was a cover.I just looked up IanThomas' vesrsion and they are both similar. This version seems to have a little more energy and I like this guys voice better but both versions are good.

  • 0:37 that guy looks like micel myers

  • It's really a shame this song didn't chart higher than it did. I think it was one of his better efforts in the 80's. That driving beat is just infectious as hell.

  • but i still love santana!!!

  • ian thomas does a better version!!!

  • 3 persons didnt held on

  • Alex Ligertwood one hell of a singer for Carlos,if not the best!!Love Carlos music!!!

  • Uffff,lo que escuchaba de jovenzuela,liiiiiinoooooo,buen recuerdo.

  • (thanks for posting) somes songs reall take you back to a world gone away

  • 80's...good times

  • A girl long ago......Annie..:)

  • Santana and this music FOREVER!!!!!!

  • My favorite song by him, and he can make a guitar sing thanks for sharing the video

  • A nice memory associated w/ this great song. In the early 80s, I was in art school in Columbus, OH. I was from Rochester, NY, so I'd have to drive on the interstates back & forth when on breaks. They played this a lot at that time on the radio. That was okay because I loved it. One late night, about two in the morning, I pulled over to stretch & this was on. I was looking at the stars & really listening to the harmony & lyrics. Made quite the impression, it's stuck with me all these years.

  • Love this video and song...One of the few Carlos himself actually sings...and what a beautiful voice he has...wish he would share it more...I love that he features other artisits, but his voice is really good too!

  • This song is written by Canadian Ian Thomas in the early 80's. Carlos Santana like the song so much , he recoreded the song for himself. Go Canadians Go.

  • @andresperling he not only wrote it,he performed it, it's his song for christ sakes, and no one barely even knows who he is,even in his home country Canada.

  • @psychobabble1000 Im sorry no one in Canada even knows who Ian Thomas is?

Speak for yourself Skippy. Thomas' musical career may not have been as big as his brothers acting career but many people STILL know who he was, especially after his stint on Red Green.

  • @CrzyCanuk13 i know who he is

  • @psychobabble1000

Read your post again Dumbass - "and no one barely even knows who he is". Its apparent from this thread that MANY people know who he is and if you DONT then you dont know/appreciate Canadian music. His career from Tranquility Base to The Boomers and on to his latest project, Lunch @ Allens is well documented. Guess you dont give your own country much credit, DO ya Mr I Am Canadian? As for "Red Green is an embarrassment to our collective intelligence", gimme a fucking break LOL

  • @CrzyCanuk13 yeah,I don't know who he is,that's why I'm on this board defending him. sorry,I do my fighting in person, not online..

  • @psychobabble1000 LOL Oh another internet tough guy "I do my fighting in person" LMFAO. Careful now your pocket protector is showing

  • Ian Thomas ROCKS!!!

  • @CrzyCanuk13 He's also an original. (wink)

  • Santana looks like zappa on this video!!!!!!!!! I Love this tune...

  • @marcodellacosta you nailed it! He really does.

Also have to say this is a great tune from a great album.

  • congratulations.. very very cool

  • wow, this brings back a lot of memories

  • wow man, I didnt see this video since forever...like 1984 or something. great, thanks for posting.

  • I was a Frosh @ Stockton State when this came out and it was the start of next BEST 5 years of my life.

  • This song came out in 1982 when I was 17. Really miss that time.

  • It was a much better time! I was 16 in 82 and loved this song!

  • Agreed! I was 14, growing up in California, and this song always brings me back to that time.

  • @thepaddywagonishere I am a little bit older but it many ways it did seem like better time. I was at CMU. I saw Santana in concert the year this song and the album it is from came out. It was one of the best concerts I have ever seen.

  • @thepaddywagonishere im just 12 now but its my no 2 or 1 song

  • @thepaddywagonishere I was 14 in 82, today music isnt what it is, not real anymore not hamronious vibes, today it's about that money and showing off.

  • @thepaddywagonishere Haha, you're old.

    just kidding

  • @MethaneMcGuiness No problemo!

  • @thepaddywagonishere I was 23 in 1982. At the time I knew the '80s was a great decade; things were just more fun. Sadly, it's all been downhill since then.

  • @pmcmanus420 I was 16 as I stated before. Those were the days of going to the roller rink eating pizza chasing girls and so on. The 80's were a great time! My son knows about the 80's and has heard all the stories of my days back when things were real!

  • This video reminds me of of what life was like for me before marriage and motherhood....(sniffle)

  • alix ligertwood was the singer at the time thia album( yes album) came out

  • i love this

  • santana vs borat

  • Who was the lead singer on this?

  • Hearing this great song always reminds of listening to Casey Kasem doing the American Top 40 - fantastic days!

  • great song.......

  • Santana plays this song with real feeling ...you can see it in his expressions as well as feel it yourself.

  • Not only this one but all of his songs!

  • From the era when music videos were like little movies - great song.

  • Yeah, they really don't make 'em like they used to, do they?

  • Oh yeah!!!

Another one of my favorites from Carlos.

  • Woohoo!! hold on!! exellent!!..thanx

  • It is a music video that I watched the VN in the 80s. I like this video because it has a mysterious side and a very interesting scenario. The music is really beautiful. So now I am still fascinated by this song. Bravo 2501feli, Thomas and Carlos Santana and the team.

  • Comment removed

  • Ian Thomas' original far supercedes this, though it was quite a compliment for Carlos to pay homage to a great song/songwriter.

  • Awesome! brings back good ol' memories!

  • Santana is awesome. This brings me back to when music really was music.

  • Right on----the music scene's totally hit the skids since about the mid-80s.

  • another great 80s song

  • Great Song.

  • Love that video. It is classic Santana.

  • This is music my friends.

  • Thank you. This was it,The original I saw on TV så många år sedan...so many years ago...1982 ...A song which just kept coming back.Keeps coming back.

  • It was a song by Ian Thomas first but this version is better.

  • FELIZ CUNPLEAÑOS CARLOS SANTANA......HOY 20 DE JULIO Larga Vida al ROLL& ROLL,ERES EL MAS GRANDE HISPANO A NIVEL MUNDIAL .

  • Just the name "Santana" brings me back to my youth and simpler times. Listening to his masterful music is wonderful. Music exists in "time" and therefore has the ability to capture time like a pic captures an instant. Thank you Carlos Santana for what you bring to the world.

Live your life to make a difference!

  • Carlos Santana is still as amazing a musician as he was in the beginning. He has the music within him.

  • Carlos Santana the Pioneer of Percussion Mix,and One of the Best Guitarist,Humanatarian,And Shoeman!

  • Thanks for posting. Strange that this has become so obscure. MTV played it every hour in 83. Guitar part in the end is haunting.

  • That Santana is beast, man! He can play guitar like mad!

  • Santana is the Man..great as ever. He's still hot looking today. He can play with guitar any day! Didn't mean this to rhyme....oy!

  • goosebumps ......effing goosebumps

  • Great Song!

  • VIVA, Carlos Santana!!!!!

  • I forgot how good this video was. Carlos is still rockin'!

  • Santana - the man sure has earned his impeccable reputation over the last FIVE decades! Excelente!

  • j'adore santana et cette chanson me rappelle bien des souvenirs heureux

  • I remember when this video came out about 1983. Damn Carlos burns it up every time.Check the parrot out bobbing to the beat.

  • Hold on is not from Zebop! it's from Shango..!!

  • Alex Ligertwood on vocals..!!

  • You're welcome. :-)

  • Notice Carlos' wife, Deborah Santana, features prominently in the video--and that Alex Ligerwood, who sings it, isn't in the video at all--for no reason I can think of.

  • this song has haunted me since the 80s; i knew it was santana, but couldn't remember the title. thank you so much!

  • When i whatching this video, i imagine summer, sea and Santana, best combination, is it.

  • I love it... Remind me when I was a teen.. good times...

  • absolutely love it

  • Beautiful song, but I can't help but notice the beginning sounds similar to the Spinners song "I'll Be Around"

  • Life is a game of chance....the stakes are high, and nothing is certain. The creepy hombre with his tarot "wheel of fortune" knows this all too well..........

  • who is the vocal?

  • CARLOS HIMSELF,CLASSIC TRACK

  • No, Carlos is not the singer on this. It's Alex Ligertwood. He was with the band in the 1980s and sang lead on this track, and on their 1981 hit single "Winning".

  • Great cover of the Ian Thomas song by a guitar wizard. I just returned from my first trip to Mexico several weeks ago...the video takes me right back there.

  • you where in the cancun jazz festival?

  • Lyrics, arrangements, video, vocals: awesome!!

    Perfect!!

  • ...im always bichin he doesnt play this great song live. Probably recording rights.

  • You are so right...

  • I agree, Santana's version is much livlier. Better energy

  • Good song, although not a Santana song.

  • Actually this is Santana. It's from their 1982 album, "Shango," which I have on CD.

  • Um. No, it is from Ian Thomas' ( a Canadian) earlier release. See the Artist's information for confirmation. Anyway, a good song no less.

  • Oh I see now. I checked out the artist information on Ian Thomas, and this version is a cover version done by Santana. Is there a version of a video with Ian Thomas on YouTube anywhere?

  • Try ian thomas 'painted ladies' you might remember that one...it's a goodie.

  • Great version anyway..!!
