  • Enjoyed the comment balloons. Perhaps this was an inspiration for the 1946 cartoons, Rhapsody Rabbit and Cat Concerto, but I don't think the relationship is very close. This is about animation itself, like most early cartoons, and usually strongly musicalized animation. By 1946 the piano could no longer be an animate entity (although still very subject to cartoon physics). The entire look and feel of the gags is different. Still can't deny the roots are here.

  • wow q viejo es esto

  • Piano: U mad Mickey? Problem?

  • pot must have been really cheep back then

  • better than the new one

  • Can someone explain to me why there are only 20 keys and some of them aren't in the right place?

  • @Fedorasnesguy It's a cartoon.

  • Thanks for this wonderful cartoon. I'm looking for a Cartoon of Goofy playing Chopin's 2nd Scherzo in which the legs of the grand piano are burning. Do you have a clue ?

  • 1:10 Hey you! That is not true!

  • Да ладно? Я бы ито лучшебы сыграл, хоть и неумею на пианино играть!

  • Michey cheio de lsd na cabeça!

  • I LOVE the annotation! Thank you for that. How cool that you can see them if you want or simply click the "hide annotations" speech balloon. I learned something new today.

  • name of the song in minute 2:09? thanks (:

  • This is more funnier than most cartoons today

  • I know this is 100 years old, but this is really funny. Makes me feel like a kid again somehow.

  • I think this was the only episode where Mickey had hair...and he forever lost it all with a simple fall lol

  • Great Video!!!! Because of the april fools day 1911 youtube thing, I clicked it and I now feel like I am at the cartoon theater on Main Street U.S.A.!!!! They have rag music playing in the theater!!!! Everybody try it!!!!

  • @tamisweetie lol I wish that they kept that feature, along with the "lights out" option for some sort of energy awareness day.

  • The name missing here is Ub Iwerks. He was the genius animator who was one of Walt Disney's best friends and earliest partner. Ub animated several of the first Mickeys almost single-hand idly. When they formed their first company, Walt and Ub named it "Iwerks-Disney" rather than the other way 'round. They were afraid that "Disney-Iwerks sounded too much like an ophthalmologist's.

  • Never heard anyone play the piano like that with their fists :P

  • Augh. How can you have the sound be out of sync? Can you make it sync better? It's like super important to the whole concept!

  • wats the name of the second song mickey plays?..... it sounds familiar......

  • For some reason, all cartoon mouses likes Franz Liszt's 2nd Hungarian Dance in C sharp minor.

  • notable! aguante Mickey mouse antiguo!

  • this looks like suicide mouse theme

  • omg i think disney consulted rachmaninoff and horowitz about the music in this short film :P

  • the piano is playing with himself...gigitty

  • The Mickey mouse today is so boring and annoying I like Mickey mouse back then

  • este video es impresionante

  • como toco el piano es impresionante*** amo a mikey mouse lo adoro eso k tengo 11 años aaaaaaaaaaa

  • thats 1 strong mouse look how he moved that fucking piano

  • The way they made the piano laugh was brilliant

  • Man I'd be freaked out if a chair and a piano were playing by themselves like that.

  • I like Mickey Mouse's longhair--recall that Classical was called "longhair music"--probably because a lot of the conductors had long hair.

  • ohhh my... this is sacred stuff here. great upload. thank you.

  • what is asbestos doing on the stage and whats it used for and is it painful 2:34-2:43 can anyone tell me why

  • Great video :D a lot of fun!

By the way does anyone know which theme is played by the piano at 1:45 ?

It is so funny : this particular theme reminds me the old Tex Avery cartoons :)

    Thanks

  • From what I read on TV Tropes and Idioms this cartoon was the first time Mickey was ever seen wearing his white gloves, also read on there that he and other certain Disney characters to exist as far back as this are some of the oldest examples of cartoon characters to wear white gloves, I guess that means Mickey and some of the rest set the trend for certain other cartoon animals and maybe even certain video game ones to do the whole wearing white gloves thing.

  • @Thenumber1yoshi

I've always speculated that they wear white gloves for the same reason Vaudevillian sleight of hand acts wore white gloves --so the people in the cheap seats can see the hands better in the spot light.

  • Why didn't you mention Franz Liszt's 2nd Hungarian Dance in C sharp minor, the second piece of music Mickey plays in this excerpt?

  • @MrMittendorf The reason the clip was uploaded was to help settle a debate about who first used "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor" in a cartoon. Maybe I should add more details about the other music as you suggest...

  • @laughland Wow! If that's the sort of thing you debate in your circle of friends, can I join your club? That's some incredibly detailed life observation. I'm impressed and inspired!

  • @laughland what is asbestos doing on the stage and whats it used for and is it painful 2:34-2:43

  • Does he have to do all that lol

  • Rachmaninov op 3 n 2 + Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody n 2

  • I knew disney needs many papers for making this

  • in rossa piano plays you

  • Has anyone noticed that the strech from 0.50-2.07 is remarkably similar to Tom and Jerry 'The Cat Concerto'? Not only is the same song played (Listz Hungarian Rhapsody no 2) but even the part where Jerry keeps the notes playing after Tom releases his 'fingers' is similar to Mickey at 0.57. Coincidence? I think not!

  • @SongsofInnocence The Cat Concerto was made FAR after this. So if you're getting at that Walt Disney stole the idea from Tom&Jerry, or viseversa, there's the possibility of course but at least I don't really care. I am impressed that you've noticed this but cartoons aren't made to be analyzed they are meant to be enjoyed. So watch a cartoon and enjoy it while it lasts.

  • hahahaha it made me laugh a lot! :D

  • This was mentioned in Epic Mickey by Clarabelle Cow.

  • AWESOME!

  • did anyone els notice mcikey was kinda fate? the artist must have been sleepy.

  • Well they chose to first draw gloves on him precisely when he should not wear gloves; playing piano

  • awww i liked all the music mickey played hahaha

  • I think that video's like these is why youtube is so fantastic. There are so many fantastic old video's and cartoon's I would have never seen without the fantastic people who post the video's and the people who invented youtube. :)

  • @alemelech

I thought they were good. Interesting nuggets of info.... :)

  • i highly appreciated the commentary i learned a lot

  • Laughland, thank you for posting this video, I loved it!!! I am a huge Classic Disney Fan:) Thanks again:)

  • The beginning is "Rachmaninov Prelude in c-minor", while the middle part is an excerpt from Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 ... Beautiful music indeed !

  • legal esses desenhos antigos é muito bem engraçado

  • check out the piano laughing at 1:39 then his its dance... awesome!!!

    Greetings from Brazil

  • That's freaking funny .. =]

  • 1:24 , thas indeed what Liszt did to all the pianos he playd!:)

  • for some reason this mickey mouse scares me =( IDK why XD It just creeps me out but I love mickey mouse but the black and white version scares me =(...

  • Man what I loved about old cartoons is that the played the great classics. The composers I know now had songs i listen to from cartoons.

  • omg he's violating the piano, i can't stand that!!

  • haha nice! :)

  • right at 2: 00 is the theme to the animaniacs movie or show.

  • what song is he playing

  • @BeBop2012 Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor

  • @BeBop2012 Rachmaninov Prelude in c-minor and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2

  • back when everything could would come to life and there was always songs :)

  • Bravo!! XD

  • Violence in music.. LOL. Love the cartoon. Mickey Rocks!

  • I like the commentaries. Cool info.

  • Wow, an old cartoon... where there is a mouse... at a piano... where Liszt is playing. There's no dialogue, and it heavily depends on visual jokes. If that isn't very reminiscent of Cat Concerto or Rhapsody Rabbit, then I don't know what would.

  • God, it saddens me that Disney completely fucked up their channel with the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana and all that other bullshit they call "entertainment".

Cartoon Network did the same thing. It used to be an amazing channel with Johnny Bravo, Dexter, Looney Toons, Scooby, ect. Half of their shows now shouldn't even be viewed by children like Chowder and Total Drama whatever. I'm extremely happy that I grew up with great tv shows to watch.

  • @AfroFreakout the new cartoons it what the kids like you show them old time cartoons they think its for babys but there a few of them that cartoons are just cool. I liked Inspector Gaget , they 'd like the jap crap cartoons.

  • oh I love it!

  • I actually enjoyed the commentaries. Thank you

  • lol

  • Wow, I have all the Mickey Mouse treasure and I didn't notice this was the first time he wore gloves.

  • at 0:49: I see that Mickey studied piano under Chico Marx!

  • Ah so Mickey Mouse chews tobacco as seen in the part @ 0:47 where he spits a tobacco wad to hit the note...so back then Mickey promoted racism, tobacco usage and animal cruelty...great role model

  • @vaibanez17 I hope you are joking.

  • @vaibanez17 hey !! he's almost a centruy in age , ppl can do worse during tat time ok,.

  • SO ACIDDDDDDD LSD TRIP

  • Walt Disney All the way

  • I liked the comments!

  • Thanks for sharing, laughland -- it's wonderful! BTW that was Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-Sharp minor, not a Hungarian Rhapsody.

  • @ratsandthunderstorms

Only the beginning portion was rachmaninoff's prelude in C# minor. 1:25 is where liszt's hungarian rhapsody no 2 is played

  • Oh my! This animation is lovable! I prefer this old style, compared to the modern Mickey!

  • @Pennaz91 Now he's in an educational show....

  • @alemelech If that's how you feel, perhaps you didn't realize that you don't have to see the commentaries. With one click you can disable them (they are called annotations). Try the rightmost icon under the video.

  • In the end Mickey and Minnie looks so high!

  • is a real piano they didnt have computers to make piano sounds in the year 1929

  • Hi - I can do without the commentary thank you!

  • @digitalis7 Appreciate the feedback and all but perhaps you didn't realize that with one click you can disable the commentary (called annotations). Try the rightmost icon under the video.

  • I never knew Mickey liked his dip, check out 0:48.

  • :-D

  • suahsuahsauhasuh

  • Ich kann nicht mehr vor lauter lachen...

  • Why when the curtains scroll down at the end of the clip says, Asbestos?

  • When the piano laughs it's just outright creepy.

I swear, I'm going to have NIGHTMARES with that sound.

  • why the fuck is the piano bending? is it even a real piano? hmmm I'm thinking not.

  • In the words of Sylvester the cat, "anything is possible in a cartoon".

  • @laughland wot is a cartoon? isnt this real life people in south america? thats wot my brother told me

  • @mkmaniacs Owned

  • @mkmaniacs Lol dude, this was in 1929, and it's a cartoon. Being creative isn't wrong.

  • @mkmaniacs haven't you ever seen a bending piano? wow it's 2010

  • @mkmaniacs

It's a cartoon buddy, it's not "real life". You can do things in cartoons you can't do in "real life".

  • @mkmaniacs why is the piano bending??? and why are you a fuckin moron without imagination????

  • Lol!

  • That's good old family racism and violence!

  • @myztainzydeout

    It's not racism.

Pianos need to learn their place in this world.

  • @SmashBroDx

    HAHAHAHAH! xD

  • Bugs Bunny has met his match. Mickey Mouse Jumped the Piano!! 2:18

  • más nostalgia, imposible!

that woukld amazzziiinng..i would pay someone to imitate this...lol

    funneeeh

  • omgsh its soo old its rlly weird watching stuff like this wen ur soo use to watching stuff in 2010

  • mickey looked better without the gloves....you know all cartoons wear those mickey mouse started the fad and it's been going on ever sense i want to see there hands even tom wears gloves in "Casanova Cat" even though you don't see him with them on though you see him take off his skin O_O

  • why is H.Rhapsody #2 so subject to old cartoons lol

  • hahahaa

  • I wonder what Walt Disney would say about all the computer animation that's out now. This old animation is lively and rubbery, while computer animation is rigid and slow. Every animator has their own style, but with a computer, every animation looks the same.

  • my piano does that crap all the time!

  • Wonderful to see the originator of the Cat Concerto and Rhapsody Bunny - two of my favorite cartoons btw - Thanks for taking the time to upload and share with us all!

  • Hahaha oh my god hilarious when he ties those wto white keys together XD

  • i love this cartoon :) :)

  • das is irgendwie voll süß^^

  • GO, MICKEY MOUSE, GO! XD

  • OMG axel rose XD!!

  • pay homage: this is where cat concerto & rhapsody rabbit got their idea from

  • Yup - the reason I posted this way back when was to show some doubters that Disney had indeed done it first.

  • @AaronFossa lol
