My father had a Zenith portable radio like that, and it was maroon, which i bet this one is also. My mother had a similar-sized portable of a different design, and it was turquoise. Very '50s colors in plastic.
When I was in the fifth grade, I got a Nintendo Game Boy for Christmas and took it to school. Mr. Merritt took it away from me while I was playing it during school. He left it on and by the time I got it back, the batteries were dead. I was playing "The Amazing Spider-Man" on mine.
@mrbobbyh Sad the teacher did that to be a jerk, but that's a fun story to have! I wanted to bring a pocket TV to school so I could watch the billionth rerun of the Flintstones like on The Jetsons!
Transistor radios were around since shortly after the transistor was invented in 1947. But in the mid to late '50s, as in all technology, they started to get smaller. I had one about this size for Christmas in '59. It was my pride and joy and I carried it around everywhere, except school, of course. It was AM only as FM really didn't have much on at that time. I loved this show as well. Even as a kid, I was blown away by all the beautiful women in the show. Thank you for posting this.
