I hate when people try to connect everything he does to his past drug use. This man is a sage, he is 68 years old and has seen everything. That is why he has such a different level of thinking. lou reed is annoyed with himself for being so condescending. you can see how depressed he is. it's like when you talk to some people and then you feel drained. he's trying to have fun with it, but he can't, because he is zarathustra, in the cave, not part of the tribe. you can see him going thru the tricks, trying to do a groucho marx, and it feels off - i think it's lovely because it reveals his real nature.
