The AK47 has a heavier slower bullet that penetrates deeper but usually goes straight through people without delivering a whole lot of stopping power.

The M-16 has a smaller lighter & faster bullet that isnt all that good at penetrating dense objects but when it hits a soft object the bullet tumble thus pushing more stopping power.

The K in AK stands for Kalishnikov (or kalishnikova) and the designer of the ak is Mikhail Kalishnikov, so that is where the k comes from. The A stands for Avtomat (russian for automatic). the 47 stands for 1947, which is the year it was first produced. Mikhail Kalishnikov is a badass. He doesn't get paid much money in u.s. dollars since the ruble is shit, but every few years the gov't. gives him a new medal.
