It's unlikely that something like that would have killed him.

That statement aside, the stick flexes when swung, plus he got hit where there was no facemask.

Pucks hit the mask/pads and bounce off.

That's why if the mask gets knocked off, play is instantly stopped, so goalies don't get hit unprotected.

Accident or not, saying as we say in Sweden a lot "du är ansvarig för din egen klubba". And in english "You are responsible for your own stick.". Which makes this incident something hockey should not stand for, at least in my eyes. He should be aware of his surrounding when swinging the stick like that. If it was a opponent he hit, how long would be be suspended? Give him the same amount as if he hit an opponent this time, just to make a point about keeping players safe.
