@HcmJames It's in Eastern Europe. And the only reason people have American accents is because the Combine regularly relocates people to other parts of the world to keep them confused and to stop them from being able to organize a rebellion.

i know its in eastern europe but if i had to chose which country it would defanetly be russia because everything there that is written(other then the combine stuff and other things drawn or posted up after the 7 hour war) is russian. hope that helped.

@CandymanSly As Eli says in Half-Life 2, "First the buildings that were near the Citadel, disappeared, and in a split-of-a-second, these massive towers appeared all over Earth." In a way, you are right. But City 17 is the most important City there was. The other cities, possibly located East, South and West are smaller, but have their own Administrators. But Breen still is the highest ranked Human. Finland probably has somekind of factories there, since the natural resources are massive.

Hey, when valve always make a big release, the graphics are announced as "groundbreaking" - back in 1998, when the origional Half Life came out, they were groundbreaking graphics...and some of the detail they put in back then is amazing. In 2004, when HL2 comes out, they are groundbreaking graphics and groundbreaking physics, i remember when i bought it in christmas '04 thinking they r amazing! d'you think hl2 ep3 grfic will b epic?

@seanthamaster You may well get your wish, there is a new mod called "Black Mesa Source" being made that will revamp the entire Half-Life with new and advanced graphics and changes. It will be a graphic redesign from the ground up of Half-Life.

@seanthamaster Check out Black Mesa Source, it's going to be a public remake of the original Half-Life with Half-Life 2: Episode 2 or better graphics. So far it looks awesome.

So half-life takes place in the eastern countries. Like Estonia, Poland, Russia, and i think Ukraine(hence Odessa) what about the rest of the world? Or are they all empty or have similar cities?

@seanthamaster Actually, to be more accurate, according to Gabe Newell, the game takes place, first in Russia, where City 17 near the Finnish border, then going inside the borders of Finland, where Ravenholm and Black Mesa East are. Then you get to the coastline near Helsinki. Then you go to Nova Prospekt, which is in Helsinki. Then you teleport back to City 17 (Russia) and you boom everyone. Episode 2 takes place on Finland, completely. And i guess Gabe Newell knows this. :)

Well i noticed that in a map in EP2 you can still see the citadel (which is in Russia) about 10 miles away. I always thought the forest was in Estonia, coast of Ukraine, and as for ravenholm, into rural areas of Russia. I wonder if there are other cities in HL2, like in America or something or is it all a wasteland cept Europe and Russia?

Well, it's City 17, so there are (probably) at least 16 other cities with citadels in the middle of them, though Breen was sort of in charge of them all from city 17

infact, in the train station you hear mention of the other cities

Nah, City 01 is most likely on or near Black Mesa (where the first game took place) since that's where it all started and the first troops came through. That'd be New Mexico in America

I also believe city 08 is in Japan.

as for the rest, I'm not too sure, Valve haven't said much about the other cities.

Sorry if i'm bugging you lol i just am real curious. But if they say that shooting the rocket at the portal in EP2 will "defeat the combine" what about the other cities? Or is City 17 the only real powerful city their is? I wonder if you get to go back to Xen or Black Mesa(whats left of it) in future games.

@seanthamaster Seeing as Breen seems to be the head of the combine operation on Earth, I'm guessing that City 17 is the main stronghold for the combine on earth- all the advisors in the Citadel there help to support that idea- unless, of course, all the OTHER Citadels have all those advisors, as well... but then that would mean... woah. Thousands of telekenetic flying bug things... What was I saying?

The Combine are yet to be defeated. The human resistance is slowly fighting their planet back, so the Combine's goal was to open another super-portal to send an army to squash the Resistance. (The same one that got them there before the Seven Hour War).

After the Resistance used Magnusson's rocket to neutralize the portal, the Combine now plan to use Aperture Science's Borealis ship to open another super-portal (that in a freak accident, teleported itself to inside a glacier.)
