  • Fat Lucy

  • This is no my idea of Lucy :/

  • YES!!! This was the version my school librarian showed us of Narnia when I was in the 4th grade. I've been in love with it ever since.

Screw the Disney version. What would us Americans do without the BBC.

  • I did a staged reading the book at my local library. No sets, no costumes, only five actors plus the four kids, basically we just read the book and acted all the parts between us.

Maybe it's because I love theater that I'd rather see this version than all the spectacular special effects and epic battle scenes Hollywood can throw at me.

  • I think that Mrs.Macready in the new film is kinda strict when she comes to pick the kids up at the train station but when she is comforting Lucy she seems more nice!!!

  • @vampiressfang I loved reading about Sophie Cook who played Susan being your actual sister!! She must have had great fun filiming this! I loved her in this!!!

  • Edmund and Lucy in the 2005 film were WAY cuter lol. *cough*cough*Skandar Keynes *cough*. Nonetheless, for an '80s production, this is pretty good quality!

  • One more thing , I know they never had the special effects at the time they made this, but surely they could have just kept the wolf as the real wolf, and then just tame the animal to look uo at the witch then had an actor do a voice over, when Maugrim spoke, ..I have seen this in adverts..and they could have stuck fake wings on real horses for the unicorns...instead of doing cartoon renditions of them. The only good things about this version is that it stays close to the book, and the lion

  • @CanadianMaster1 I am going to assume that you are one of those sorts of people who can't find the charm in the classics. Sure, the costumes were lousy and the special effects were laughable, but this version of tLtWatW is always going to remain a classic to many many people, and whilst I respect your opinion, I ask you not to express it on a series of videos that is filled with fans who could take offense.

  • @keibranch I am just implying that they could have easily have done better WITHOUT the technology.... like putting wings on real horses for unicorns, etc. I didn't say that I don't appreciate it... I remember watching it at the time on TV. Read what I wrote again... before you assume things.

  • I must add, again, that the beavers in this were a joke..... the costumes were, ha ha, fuck... and the voices...so goofy. At least the films version had better voices at least for the beavers. And I cringed when the child fox, and the Christmas table gets up and tries to stand up to the witch, and says "he has, he has , he has" My lord.... the acting a lot of the time, seemed like something out of a primary school play. And the cartoon animals!!!!!!!!1

  • I am sorry, just watched this film and the BBC ones effects is so playschool like, I mean, couldn't they have just tamed two real beavers to just walk around, and then when they are sitting at the table, have realistic looking puppets. The costumes are laughable The Lion was the only thing okay in the film. I sent my American friend a clip of the bit when Edmund enters the witches house, and she was in hysterics when the wolf transformed into the actor in the costume as Maugrim. Oh dear

  • Aired on sundays on the BBC in the late 80s. Loved it

  • Odd how similar the opening of this actually is to the more recent movie version.

That may have something to do with all the train stuff being shot on the Severn Valley Railway which the film also used but, that bit where the train pulls out of the station to reveal the Pevensie family on the platform.

    Almost identical shot.

  • I love this version more than the movies ^^

  • Wherever did they get that old steam train from? Was that filmed at London Victoria?

  • @robinjuste76 they probably used a modern diesel electric dressed up like a steam engine, you could get an effective train smoke special effect with dry ice and water.

  • That lucy is one annoying goofy ugly lil chick!!

  • It's on right now on BBC1! Who's watching it? ;)

  • I reamember being about 4 and this movie scared me but i loved the story. I have watched about 25 times in my life

    memories

  • the new Narnia movies are soooo... much better. these actors are terrible!

  • @sassygirl12336 The new Narnia movies are gay.

  • hahahaha lucy you make me laugh in this film in a bad way!! the way she acts lol xxx

  • Peter reminds me so much of my hostbrother, the way he pronounces the words and his face :D

  • in my opinion the cronicals of narnia is the best christian allegory EVER

  • @MeneTekelUpharsin You're opinion is appreciated. I think the same way.

  • Aslan is so fake in this movie

  • @TheGoodBitch178 For 80's British television, it's pretty good.

  • @TheGoodBitch i agree!!! i think they could of made him better like the one now!!

  • this movie used to scare me

  • this brings back good memories - i used to pester my dad to bring these home from his school library for me to watch. i liked the remakes a lot but this is my childhood right here so it is always going to win. thanks so much for posting

  • Lucy's such a sweet little girl. ^^

  • I love this movie. I grow up watching this vesion. The remake was awful. They didn't even have aslan fly.

  • @TheIlovelucy1. Aslan is a lion not a flying lion.

  • how do you get this recorded

  • It's so weird seeing this again. They all seemed so much taller haha, I still have all the tapes in my basement

  • @CrumpleHornedSnorkac Are they still working

  • Comment removed

  • I need to find these copy of Narnia of the 1988 as well too.

  • how wonderful! thanks for this vid!

  • i like 3:35 is like hevay (no welcomed to mrs marcreadys house )

  • i want video series help ? (The Return of the Antelope)

  • I really admire the BBC and the work they did on the Chronicles of Narnia!

  • This fucking scared me when I was a kid.

  • @Monkeymosh still scares me.

  • this movie brings back my childhood memories.

  • if you want to watch it from the start but no music go to 0:33 secs

  • am just watching this in ma school

  • lucy is the bastard daughter of the two beavers

  • This is so much better than the remake. The BBC is amazing

  • @Plauge. Why? The Disney version is musch better but I'm not hating the BBC version.

  • @Plauge. No, the remake and this is better than the first one.

  • I so remember this. I use to watch this every sunday after I got home from church when I was a kid

  • Wow I remember afew years ago when my grandmother forced me to watch this and I'm thinking: You know Grammy, you should really get in touch with the modern world where people watch the new version of this because this one really kinda sucks. Not to be mean or anything, but Edmund sounds like a girl and Lucy is kinda fat and her haircut is brutal.

  • @ponygal144 trololol

  • Is it bad as much as i love this and Disneys versions i always am annoyed Lucy is not fair haired as she is said to be in the book most notably "But as for Lucy, she was always gay and golden-haired, and all princes in those parts desired her to be their Queen, and her own people called her Queen Lucy the Valiant."...it's just always annoyed me...but I still love the story thats all that really matters

  • A susana é bem gatinha

  • idiot, the serie is called the chronicles of Narnia. the lion, the Witch and the wardrobe it's the name of the first book.

  • that boy is a brat!!!

  • why when it started it was called Chronicles of Narmia and now at 2:30 they are calling it The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe when thats the real name The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe!!!

  • @Hermione1983 The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the first book in a series called 'The Chronicles of Narnia.' Therefore, its full title is 'The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.'

  • this Chronicles of Narmia is 100 times better than the new ones!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • but the 80's ont is called lion witch and a wardope !!!

  • wow is this the 80's one? wow this brings back SO many memories!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh gosh, I remember being tiny and watching this when my sister came round to stay (she plays Susan in this- I was very jealous) and thinking how old Peter looked. Now I'm 15, and damn...he's so young looking DX I feel betrayed by nostalgia!

But still- he wears bow ties, and bow ties are cool!

  • @vampiressfang Wow! So your sister is TWENTY TWO years older than you, and you weren't even born when she made this?! That's incredible!

  • @rainbowpride76 Thanks for the sarcasm :P much appreciated.

  • @vampiressfang It wasn't. It's just one heck of an age difference. I feel for your Mum!

  • The actors are good but the ages are just not right... This is what it seems like to me in ascending order, Susan, Lucy, Edmund, Peter. This version has its good points but I like the new film better =="

  • why does susan look older than peter

  • @MrChubb500 mabey to show susans more mature

  • magicians nephew is still the best

  • What I still appreciate about this series is that the low budget feel actually adds to the viewing pleasure. The problem with the new movies is that they miss the damn point. It's not about spectacular special effects and CGI. The movies lose you in the effects so that you forget whats integral to the story. And if Lucy is too fat here for you, get a life. I'd much rather have a real story than eye candy. This isn't Twilight. If I want that sort of thing, I'll watch porn.

  • I'm sorry if i'm insultin u by saying this, but I like the actors from the other series better!

  • @MewMahiNia You are insulting me with your bad spelling!

  • @MewMahiNia Well, I must admit, Susan is hotter in the new series, but I don't go to watch Chronicles of Narnia with the intention of smuggling a bottle of lube on the movie theatre.

  • is Ms Mcready Maggie Smith?

  • This was made in the 1980's as a BBC wonderworks special. 20 plus years later the technology is updated. It's not meant to be a movie, it's theatre filmed. so it's going to feel different.

  • @Myscimagic I'm wrong it was for television not for theatre.

  • @Myscimagic 1989, actually. I think the Silver Chair was released on BBC Wonderworks in 1990

  • haha lol put the captions on and go to the part when lucy tell's her name to the professer

  • gosh, these kids really can't act. it's great though, i'm not trolling. its very charming.

  • Mrs. Macready reminds me of Maggie Smith's portrayal of Jean Brodie.

  • At 1:44, Susan's expression is like, "Edmund, did you miss the part where the bombs were falling on London?"

  • the storyline hhere is so weird and the girl playing lucy is... weird too. idk just my opinion

  • lol. i had to watch this in 3rd grade after reading the book in class, this was of course before the disney version came out, lol. u could here kids in my class laughing at some of the costumes and cheesy effects, this takes me back :)

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! This is so amazing! I'm also Ásatrú and feel the same way that you do about modern society.

  • all the fat comments just show cynical this generation is. Nobody cared back then.

  • My mom used to hum this music for me when I cried :')

  • Disney's Lucy is way better and prettier. Not to be mean.

  • @G2010J Prettier yes, but not everyone in life is not pretty, not like american films or tv land

  • @TrueGoth1 Um, no offense but I didn't understand what you meant. Do you mind rephrasing it?

  • @G2010J I think what TrueGoth1 was trying to say ... Prettier yes, but not everyone is pretty. Not like what you see in American films or " TV land ". :D

  • @oliviaw83 Oh okay. Thanks. And yeah, not everyone is pretty but in the book she's described as cure or something and this one is... well... eek lol.

  • Brilliance... My childhood memories of this have come flooding back.. Thanks a million... What an upload... Best in a long time.

  • To me, Peter looks younger than Edmund here, and perhaps even younger than Susan! Weird....

  • Why is everyone picking on Lucy?? She's the real Lucy! Leave her alone.

  • @sarah2837 Well the only "real Lucy" is the one in the C.S. Lewis book. NOT an actress (who in my humble opinon wasn't very good) in an 80s tv series adaption of said book. But I do agree that people shouldn't comment like "OMG, she's so fat" or "Lucy's ugly"; that is just rude and childish. Now, I personally don't like her acting-I have nothing whatsoever against how she looks.

  • I love this! Reminds me of when i was young...i hate the new film...this is sooo much better! :)

  • this is seriously jank, I couldn't stand watching more than five minutes. The books and movies are so much better, this BBC regurgitation does not do either justice.

  • yowser..... Lucy's kinda creepy

  • when i was only 6 i was scared of the lion when it read the message. when it roars.

  • i'm sorry, but after watching voyage, this sucks royal hippogriff

  • This is sooooo awful!! Peter is older not younger!

  • So why are the actors so ugly?

  • @rach0babe

Sophie is so grotesque, its a long standing joke of my friends and I

  • she`s fat

    very fat

  • Lucy's fat a shit...

  • I love these but the only thing that irks me is Lucy. She's just so annoying here.

  • This one is scarrier lol

  • mrs meckrevie sounds like proffesor micgonigal in harry potter

  • THIS version is the only way I've heard the music, all crackly and poor quality. I had no IDEA you could buy the soundtrack, hearing it full quality for the first time is astounding!! Thank you so much!!

  • I watched these a lot growing up. The new effects in the remakes are GREAT but is it just me or have they lost something?....

  • I just finished a school play of this... I was Peter! It was based on this script!

  • Still did not see all the chapters. But I accept that this version has its charm. If I have to criticize the actors are not very good. and that the children selected to play the Pevensie siblings are not adjusted to the ages.

  • I remeber reading this as a child. Ah, good memories. Thanks!

  • lol why is edmund older then peter

  • Wow... This is hilarious! Peter is younger than Edmond? What??? I don't remember that part of the story.... But it still funny. Very funny!

  • i know the professor is digory but what happened to polly?!

  • OH NO ED NOTHING HAPPENS IN THE COUNTRY! YOU JUST GO TO A MAGICAL COUNTRY WITH A EVIL WITCH AND TALKING LION! sorry for caps!

  • I think this Peter is a bit young. He looks younger than Susan.

I'm not hating, just pointing it out.

  • I hope the whole thing is available, I've been DYING to watch, it's been years. !!! Thanks!

  • whoa i havent seen this since i was a toddler! this brings back so many memories! :D

  • I grew up with this one! This is the best Narnia, no matter what! :D

  • I wish this soundtrack were available on itunes! I would buy it in a heartbeat!

  • @kcalli The soundtrack is available to own on CD! Go to Amazon.com and search for BBC Narnia. The CD is called "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Television Music of Geoffrey Burgon"! It's also available as a digital download on Amazon if you don't want to buy the physical CD.

  • WHY DIDNT I EVER HEARD ABOUT THIS ONE!

  • The only bit that I like about this is professor kirks. The actor is really good.

  • THIS is the true Narnia for me. This is what I grew up watching and the faces of those actors will ALWAYS come to my mind first whenever Narnia is brought up. Thank you SO much for uploading this. I haven't seen it in years and it means so much. Thank you.

  • wow they all look so young! and to think I used to have a crush on susan hahahaa!

    Nostalgia Overload!

  • I know ppl say they look too close in age but they act different ages so their acting makes up for it.

  • I have yet to see the new version of this movie(although im sure its great) but I love this film! Thanks!

  • We love this version the most. Despite the lack of fancy visual effects it seems a truer version. Our kids grew up with this so I guess I am sentimental about it as well.

The music makes me want to cry.Thank you for posting this.

  • little diferent...with narnia 2006......

  • Im a 16 year old boy, and i can remember watching this at my grandmas house at the age of like 4? The news version has nothing on this, at all.! thanks so much for uploading these. <3 i love you.

  • Does anybody know where I could get the soundtrack for this? If it's even available?

  • Better then the newer ones & im 19! :)

  • Ive never seen the new version of narnia only this one, I used to love this when i was little :)

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! It brings back so many memories. It's been ages. I can't wait until the Mr. and Mrs. Beaver part ahahaha.

  • @username0865 You're most welcome! I'm so glad there are so many BBC Narnia fans out there! :)

  • God this brings back so many memories.

  • But this Lucy go forward inside...isn't against rules of the wardrobe?..only backward walk lead into narnia?

  • God, this version's terrible, but I still love it. XD I haven't watched these since I was little. Gotta say, though, I prefer the Disney version. It just flows better.

  • I think the current cast is more realistic on thier age and thus also prefer it better.. but I will always remember this one...

  • It's been so long since I've seen this! But I watched it so much when I was younger, I feel like I know every line

  • when my fiance and I get married I want to walk down the aisle to the music from the first 30 seconds of this. ^_^

  • No offense to those who grew up with this version. It stays very true to the book, but I think Georgie Henley is Very much cuter ;)

  • I only wish they could have gotten to the Magician's Nephew and the Last Battle.

  • This version is better because it's not rushed like the Disney film. They are allowed to develop the story over rather than try to fit it in under two hours

  • I must admit, even if the Disney had better sets, effects, and - to some extent - better actors, this version still totally trumps it. It's just more genuine. :)

  • @catbass93 So true! Even if it is a bit weird them saying the words of the book!, at least I feel it's kinda weird.

  • @catbass93 Better actors? LOL. The new series is a cross between a PG version of Twilight (complete with Caspian trying to get a piece of Susan's ass) and a bad remake of Lord of the Rings. Sure, the special effects are good, but the costumes, unlike this version, are unauthentic and disturbingly titillating.

  • @surfer53 Shall we say, better modern movie actors (i.e. BAD actors).

  • @surfer53 I didn't mind the first film, but Prince Caspain was AWFUL. C.S.Lewis must have been turning in his grace the day the writers decided that in order for a teenage audiance to enjoy it, they had to have Caspian and Susan have some kind of cring-inducing romance. It was so bad, I haven't bothered with the Voyage of the Dawn treader. For a start, they had the White Witch on the promotional board, wh isn't even IN Voyage of the Dawn treader. Wtf?

  • @sunnyncloudy The witch is in Dawn Treader (the new movie), but only as a nightmare on the dark island; Edmund's the only one who sees her. There are a few changes from the book (Gumpas is left out, some of the islands are in a different order in the film than they were in the books, and there's a subplot about seven magic swords), but it's a great movie, and I found it very true to the 'feel' of the book, I would recomend at least giving it a try if you haven't seen it yet.

  • because disney sucks that 's why this version seem more magiacal !

  • i don't know why, but this version feels more magical

  • ok what the heck is wrong with these people watch closely at 6:52 and 8:37 ish at susan she freaking goes see through thats odd does anybody know why that is

  • Awww!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks so much. This is the Narnia I know and love. Not all the new CGI stuff. The new one's just a pretty picture with no real substance.

  • i still like the REAL narnia better !

  • @Lucyderidder so is this the FAKE narnia?

  • @EmilyJCullen No, but they would never have made it if there wasend the better Narnia.

And plz, this narnia is not that good, the first narnia with the high budget is mutch better in my offence

    (no bad to you)

  • @Lucyderidder ok just to let you know this Narnia was made first in 1988 and the newer Narnia one was made in 2005 just thought you should know

  • @EmilyJCullen oeps... sorry xD i ques your right after all xD

  • I like the new cast better... except susan... i cant stand the new susan!!

  • OMG ive been looking for this forever!!! i remember watching this when i was like 4.. and the only thing i remembered was that lucy was fat! HAHAH

  • I thought we can't find the Narnia portal if we go forward into the wardrobe..

  • i think c.s lewis would liked this film

  • otra cosa: susan parece ser la mayor de los 4 hermanos cuando es la 2da

  • nada que ver con las pelis de anria desde los artistas hasta la dirección pero nunca cae mal ver algo de anrnia

  • I like how the professor comes out & greets them!
