I did a staged reading the book at my local library. No sets, no costumes, only five actors plus the four kids, basically we just read the book and acted all the parts between us.
Maybe it's because I love theater that I'd rather see this version than all the spectacular special effects and epic battle scenes Hollywood can throw at me.
I decided to try out the BBC version, it's not that bad actually. It bothers me a bit that Edmund looks older than Peter and some minor stuff, but not that bad at all :P Though, if any one could respond, is it true that the BBC version is completely accurate when it comes to the book? It's what I heard, and I just got the books (I am going to read them soon...hopefully...) and was just wondering if it was true...
I think that Mrs.Macready in the new film is kinda strict when she comes to pick the kids up at the train station but when she is comforting Lucy she seems more nice!!!
@vampiressfang I loved reading about Sophie Cook who played Susan being your actual sister!! She must have had great fun filiming this! I loved her in this!!!
Edmund and Lucy in the 2005 film were WAY cuter lol. *cough*cough*Skandar Keynes *cough*. Nonetheless, for an '80s production, this is pretty good quality!
One more thing , I know they never had the special effects at the time they made this, but surely they could have just kept the wolf as the real wolf, and then just tame the animal to look uo at the witch then had an actor do a voice over, when Maugrim spoke, ..I have seen this in adverts..and they could have stuck fake wings on real horses for the unicorns...instead of doing cartoon renditions of them. The only good things about this version is that it stays close to the book, and the lion
@CanadianMaster1 I am going to assume that you are one of those sorts of people who can't find the charm in the classics. Sure, the costumes were lousy and the special effects were laughable, but this version of tLtWatW is always going to remain a classic to many many people, and whilst I respect your opinion, I ask you not to express it on a series of videos that is filled with fans who could take offense.
@keibranch I am just implying that they could have easily have done better WITHOUT the technology.... like putting wings on real horses for unicorns, etc. I didn't say that I don't appreciate it... I remember watching it at the time on TV. Read what I wrote again... before you assume things.
I must add, again, that the beavers in this were a joke..... the costumes were, ha ha, fuck... and the voices...so goofy. At least the films version had better voices at least for the beavers. And I cringed when the child fox, and the Christmas table gets up and tries to stand up to the witch, and says "he has, he has , he has" My lord.... the acting a lot of the time, seemed like something out of a primary school play. And the cartoon animals!!!!!!!!1
I am sorry, just watched this film and the BBC ones effects is so playschool like, I mean, couldn't they have just tamed two real beavers to just walk around, and then when they are sitting at the table, have realistic looking puppets. The costumes are laughable The Lion was the only thing okay in the film. I sent my American friend a clip of the bit when Edmund enters the witches house, and she was in hysterics when the wolf transformed into the actor in the costume as Maugrim. Oh dear
Odd how similar the opening of this actually is to the more recent movie version.
That may have something to do with all the train stuff being shot on the Severn Valley Railway which the film also used but, that bit where the train pulls out of the station to reveal the Pevensie family on the platform.
@robinjuste76 they probably used a modern diesel electric dressed up like a steam engine, you could get an effective train smoke special effect with dry ice and water.
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the first book in a series called 'The Chronicles of Narnia.' Therefore, its full title is 'The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.' BBC The Lion The witch etc. etc. is better than the RUBBISH REMAKE(*)
this brings back good memories - i used to pester my dad to bring these home from his school library for me to watch. i liked the remakes a lot but this is my childhood right here so it is always going to win. thanks so much for posting
Wow I remember afew years ago when my grandmother forced me to watch this and I'm thinking: You know Grammy, you should really get in touch with the modern world where people watch the new version of this because this one really kinda sucks. Not to be mean or anything, but Edmund sounds like a girl and Lucy is kinda fat and her haircut is brutal.
Is it bad as much as i love this and Disneys versions i always am annoyed Lucy is not fair haired as she is said to be in the book most notably "But as for Lucy, she was always gay and golden-haired, and all princes in those parts desired her to be their Queen, and her own people called her Queen Lucy the Valiant."...it's just always annoyed me...but I still love the story thats all that really matters
why when it started it was called Chronicles of Narmia and now at 2:30 they are calling it The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe when thats the real name The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe!!!
@Hermione1983 The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the first book in a series called 'The Chronicles of Narnia.' Therefore, its full title is 'The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.'
Oh gosh, I remember being tiny and watching this when my sister came round to stay (she plays Susan in this- I was very jealous) and thinking how old Peter looked. Now I'm 15, and damn...he's so young looking DX I feel betrayed by nostalgia!
But still- he wears bow ties, and bow ties are cool!
The actors are good but the ages are just not right... This is what it seems like to me in ascending order, Susan, Lucy, Edmund, Peter. This version has its good points but I like the new film better =="
What I still appreciate about this series is that the low budget feel actually adds to the viewing pleasure. The problem with the new movies is that they miss the damn point. It's not about spectacular special effects and CGI. The movies lose you in the effects so that you forget whats integral to the story. And if Lucy is too fat here for you, get a life. I'd much rather have a real story than eye candy. This isn't Twilight. If I want that sort of thing, I'll watch porn.
@MewMahiNia Well, I must admit, Susan is hotter in the new series, but I don't go to watch Chronicles of Narnia with the intention of smuggling a bottle of lube on the movie theatre.
This was made in the 1980's as a BBC wonderworks special. 20 plus years later the technology is updated. It's not meant to be a movie, it's theatre filmed. so it's going to feel different.
lol. i had to watch this in 3rd grade after reading the book in class, this was of course before the disney version came out, lol. u could here kids in my class laughing at some of the costumes and cheesy effects, this takes me back :)
@G2010J I think what TrueGoth1 was trying to say ... Prettier yes, but not everyone is pretty. Not like what you see in American films or " TV land ". :D
@sarah2837 Well the only "real Lucy" is the one in the C.S. Lewis book. NOT an actress (who in my humble opinon wasn't very good) in an 80s tv series adaption of said book. But I do agree that people shouldn't comment like "OMG, she's so fat" or "Lucy's ugly"; that is just rude and childish. Now, I personally don't like her acting-I have nothing whatsoever against how she looks.
this is seriously jank, I couldn't stand watching more than five minutes. The books and movies are so much better, this BBC regurgitation does not do either justice.
THIS version is the only way I've heard the music, all crackly and poor quality. I had no IDEA you could buy the soundtrack, hearing it full quality for the first time is astounding!! Thank you so much!!
Still did not see all the chapters. But I accept that this version has its charm. If I have to criticize the actors are not very good. and that the children selected to play the Pevensie siblings are not adjusted to the ages.
@kcalli The soundtrack is available to own on CD! Go to Amazon.com and search for BBC Narnia. The CD is called "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Television Music of Geoffrey Burgon"! It's also available as a digital download on Amazon if you don't want to buy the physical CD.
THIS is the true Narnia for me. This is what I grew up watching and the faces of those actors will ALWAYS come to my mind first whenever Narnia is brought up. Thank you SO much for uploading this. I haven't seen it in years and it means so much. Thank you.
We love this version the most. Despite the lack of fancy visual effects it seems a truer version. Our kids grew up with this so I guess I am sentimental about it as well.
The music makes me want to cry.Thank you for posting this.
Im a 16 year old boy, and i can remember watching this at my grandmas house at the age of like 4? The news version has nothing on this, at all.! thanks so much for uploading these. <3 i love you.
God, this version's terrible, but I still love it. XD I haven't watched these since I was little. Gotta say, though, I prefer the Disney version. It just flows better.
This version is better because it's not rushed like the Disney film. They are allowed to develop the story over rather than try to fit it in under two hours
I must admit, even if the Disney had better sets, effects, and - to some extent - better actors, this version still totally trumps it. It's just more genuine. :)
@catbass93 Better actors? LOL. The new series is a cross between a PG version of Twilight (complete with Caspian trying to get a piece of Susan's ass) and a bad remake of Lord of the Rings. Sure, the special effects are good, but the costumes, unlike this version, are unauthentic and disturbingly titillating.
@surfer53 I didn't mind the first film, but Prince Caspain was AWFUL. C.S.Lewis must have been turning in his grace the day the writers decided that in order for a teenage audiance to enjoy it, they had to have Caspian and Susan have some kind of cring-inducing romance. It was so bad, I haven't bothered with the Voyage of the Dawn treader. For a start, they had the White Witch on the promotional board, wh isn't even IN Voyage of the Dawn treader. Wtf?
@sunnyncloudy The witch is in Dawn Treader (the new movie), but only as a nightmare on the dark island; Edmund's the only one who sees her. There are a few changes from the book (Gumpas is left out, some of the islands are in a different order in the film than they were in the books, and there's a subplot about seven magic swords), but it's a great movie, and I found it very true to the 'feel' of the book, I would recomend at least giving it a try if you haven't seen it yet.
ok what the heck is wrong with these people watch closely at 6:52 and 8:37 ish at susan she freaking goes see through thats odd does anybody know why that is
Awww!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks so much. This is the Narnia I know and love. Not all the new CGI stuff. The new one's just a pretty picture with no real substance.

I wish this soundtrack were available on itunes! I would buy it in a heartbeat!
kcalli 7 months ago 2
@kcalli The soundtrack is available to own on CD! Go to Amazon.com and search for BBC Narnia. The CD is called "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Television Music of Geoffrey Burgon"! It's also available as a digital download on Amazon if you don't want to buy the physical CD.

The only bit that I like about this is professor kirks. The actor is really good.

THIS is the true Narnia for me. This is what I grew up watching and the faces of those actors will ALWAYS come to my mind first whenever Narnia is brought up. Thank you SO much for uploading this. I haven't seen it in years and it means so much. Thank you.
Tabi921 7 months ago
wow they all look so young! and to think I used to have a crush on susan hahahaa!
Nostalgia Overload!
MrMunchies64 7 months ago
I know ppl say they look too close in age but they act different ages so their acting makes up for it.

I have yet to see the new version of this movie(although im sure its great) but I love this film! Thanks!
dominican5683 8 months ago
We love this version the most. Despite the lack of fancy visual effects it seems a truer version. Our kids grew up with this so I guess I am sentimental about it as well.
The music makes me want to cry.Thank you for posting this.

God, this version's terrible, but I still love it. XD I haven't watched these since I was little. Gotta say, though, I prefer the Disney version. It just flows better.
LovelyMyko 8 months ago
I think the current cast is more realistic on thier age and thus also prefer it better.. but I will always remember this one...

when my fiance and I get married I want to walk down the aisle to the music from the first 30 seconds of this. ^_^

No offense to those who grew up with this version. It stays very true to the book, but I think Georgie Henley is Very much cuter ;)
superreader001 9 months ago 2
I only wish they could have gotten to the Magician's Nephew and the Last Battle.
pucpimp 9 months ago 3
This version is better because it's not rushed like the Disney film. They are allowed to develop the story over rather than try to fit it in under two hours
pucpimp 9 months ago 4
I must admit, even if the Disney had better sets, effects, and - to some extent - better actors, this version still totally trumps it. It's just more genuine. :)
catbass93 9 months ago 33
@catbass93 So true! Even if it is a bit weird them saying the words of the book!, at least I feel it's kinda weird.
42Drwhovian 4 months ago
@catbass93 Better actors? LOL. The new series is a cross between a PG version of Twilight (complete with Caspian trying to get a piece of Susan's ass) and a bad remake of Lord of the Rings. Sure, the special effects are good, but the costumes, unlike this version, are unauthentic and disturbingly titillating.
surfer53 4 months ago
@surfer53 Shall we say, better modern movie actors (i.e. BAD actors).
catbass93 4 months ago
@surfer53 I didn't mind the first film, but Prince Caspain was AWFUL. C.S.Lewis must have been turning in his grace the day the writers decided that in order for a teenage audiance to enjoy it, they had to have Caspian and Susan have some kind of cring-inducing romance. It was so bad, I haven't bothered with the Voyage of the Dawn treader. For a start, they had the White Witch on the promotional board, wh isn't even IN Voyage of the Dawn treader. Wtf?
sunnyncloudy 3 months ago
@sunnyncloudy The witch is in Dawn Treader (the new movie), but only as a nightmare on the dark island; Edmund's the only one who sees her. There are a few changes from the book (Gumpas is left out, some of the islands are in a different order in the film than they were in the books, and there's a subplot about seven magic swords), but it's a great movie, and I found it very true to the 'feel' of the book, I would recomend at least giving it a try if you haven't seen it yet.

@Lucyderidder so is this the FAKE narnia?
EmilyJCullen 9 months ago
@EmilyJCullen No, but they would never have made it if there wasend the better Narnia.
And plz, this narnia is not that good, the first narnia with the high budget is mutch better in my offence
(no bad to you)
