It depends what it looked like. It could have been a tsymbaly from the carpathians area, or a santour from the middle east, or a similar instrument from india or china. they exist all over..!
I saw a Chinese man playing on the subway platform, Times Square. He told me the name:
not so easy as "santour" - but I think not tsymbaly.
He played some 'gypsy' melodies, and some Chinese music. I've seen small Chinese orchestras in NYC that use what look like the usual sized Cimbalom. It definitely comes to us (as does the violin) from the Far East.
This is the best cimbalom I have ever listen to.....brilliant...magnificent....genius!!!

I think the chinese name is Yangquin. in this case all the instrument originated in the middle east, or at least that's what most people believe.
