With Labor preferencing the Greens and the Liberals preferencing Family First, the Democrats are going to need to at least double their primary vote in the Senate from their current polling.

I really hope they can do it , as there must be a very good reason why Labor and Liberal have made such an effort in attempting to remove the only party that has ever been able to properly review their legislation.

The reason the Democrats went into oblivion is because they had their argument about what they stand for in public, rather than in private. The Dems started asa disaffected centre-right party; a Liberal offshoot. Over time it drifted left and then the party had a public spat over whether it was going to be a right or left party. That stuff should have been sorted out in private. Meg Lees had the last laugh by bringing down the party.

I don't think this is an accurate reading, Panadawn. The Dems were formed only half by liberals like Don Chipp, the other half the democratic Australia Party - hence the name 'Democrats', so I think the party has always contained a wide variety of voices from day one. Some people actually try and think beyond 'left/right' dualities.

I love the environment, and think the Greens may be doing a great job in that sphere, but the environment is now a mainstream issue, as well as something the Dems have been campaigning on for ages, with substantial outcomes like the World Heritage Legislation. The Greens boycotted this in the Senate, but it's now the basis for legal challenges to the Pulp Mill! Just goes to show that for all the noise from the Left and Right, it's the Dems who should have the balance.
