  • nice work, but can't see anything, could you do it in a higher resolution? Linux Foreva :-)

  • emerge seems beautiful and detailed as well, the developers must be very proud. If only it didn't take so damn long during the download, compiling, and cleaning process

  • I found it boring. Maybe you should do one with commentary and zoomed in on command line a bit. That way you may attract ppl to Gentoo rather than scare them off. I have used Portage in BSD, is it basically the same?

  • @Yldii Mainly ;)

  • nice wallpaper :)

  • Hey, how do you compile the gentoo? I dowloaded it and then burn on CD but I know that I need to comple it, can you help me how to do that and what do I need for it?

  • is it weird if I dread Gnome or Firefox updates on my Gentoo box?

  • Not at all! Gnome takes hours, and sometimes days to compile! Firefox on the other hand takes about 30 minutes.

  • Xulrunner (firefox component) too three hours to build on my system, which was about the same as gnome.

    and suddently REVDEP-REBUILD, EVERYWHERE! AHHH

    it's all good fun.

  • gentoo power !!

  • In the beginning of this song it sounds like a cool hip-hop son ( yes this song is kinda kewl too. By the way I will soon be a Gentoo user after I build my computer. I do believe that I am 7.3339% complete with my dream build.

  • Cool, and good luck.

The song is Mozart's 23 Symphony.

  • @unl0cker

Depressing to hear someone thought that was a hiphop song.....

  • @Ericshiz It IS a cool hip hop song. It is the base melody for rapper Tonedeff's song, Velocity. Check it out, he's amazing!

  • thank you very much for the video, has served me much

    :)

  • try to see 1050366 at vimeo (:

  • "quadcore gentoo power"

  • Unl0cker, where did you get that background? It looks really nice. And emerge is quite interesting.

  • I'm a Ubuntu user for a long time now and have some fair knowledge of how Linux distros work, iv used 11 of them already. I'm wondering what exactly is the Gentoo package system, is it rpm, deb,or what iv heard "source code" which I believe is tar,tar gz,tgz, tar bz,etc? thanks in advance.

PS. Sorry about the space in-between thing with the file names, i meant to put . but you tube wouldn't let me post because it thought it was an email or website.

  • Sure,

The package system is called portage, and is managed by a python app called emerge.

ALL packages (except closed source things, like nvidia drivers, etc) are downoaded as source, and then compiled by emerge. This way you can customized packages and with what support they will be build with as you install them.

  • iv recently installed sabayon, and find portage confusing. first off i have no idea how to do a world update, i know in Gentoo you type 'emerge world update,' iv read for sabayon thats not recommended, iv seen post for a "sabayon" world update and its like 100 pages worth of commends. iv used kuroo and portato and updates don't work, so im a bit confused on how im suppose to update my system and how to install packages i download from the internet and not from portage. any suggestions please.

  • just to clearify; everytime you use emerge, it makes it gentoo; seeing as how it is getting the packages from gentoo sources, and not sabayon sources. world update is the same commands as it would be for gentoo. for best results in gentoo, though, do a minimal install...lol. it may be harder for most people; but it pays off :p haha

  • First of all, you're using the wrong syntax. On Gentoo you would run 'emerge --update world' or my favorite 'emerge -NuavD world' which is the same as 'emerge --newuse --update --ask --verbose --deep world'

Of course, that's on Gentoo. I suggest doing a Gentoo minimal install if you still don't know what you're doing. You can learn a lot from it :)

  • @unl0cker So are there closed sourced apps in the repos or does the source have to be available to be in portage? My understanding is that gentoo doesn't support installation from binaries. How do you install proprietary apps?

  • this is a cool theme you got and i also like the music im in the process of installing gentoo using the live cd.

  • Nice.. this is KDE using cristal window theme that can be found at "kde-look dot org". Well if you need help installing gentoo drop by #linux channel in the rizon network (irc dot rizon dot net). I'm there almost every evening.

    Cheers

  • thanx

  • thought i let you know i got gentoo installed and am using it.

  • you should all try yakuake, its fun to use.

    SlackWARE 11.0

  • urxvt

  • what´s the terminal emulator that you was used in this video ? thnka

  • Well, I don't have a specific awnser for that. I can tell you what my multiframe cfgs are though. File Format/Video Codec: Auto FPS: 10 MaxtimeMaxFrame: unl Quality: 75% Audio: /dev/dsp Audio Codec: Auto SampleRate: 22050 BitRate: 32000 Channels: 1 I do record in multiframe. About the CPU, well what CPU do you have? Here's my info, try to compare: Linux obnoxious 2.6.17-gentoo-r5 #2 Fri Aug 25 02:10:18 EDT 2006 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3400+ GNU/Linux
  • Pretty cool :) Really like the theme and such, i have a question though :)

How do you record so fluid ? when i record (xvidcap) in 10 fps, 60% cpu is used, and when i make them into a video i cant get it under 24 fps ?
