Thank you for the reply. Yes, Vilma was very beautiful. The love scene in the ruins was one of such intensity. The look on Rudy's and Vilma's faces was so passionate. It was truly as if they were both indeed really feeling it! I know that Vilma said she was really affected by the look in Rudy's eyes. :-)
@SoothingChime15 Are Vllma's memoirs published somewhere? I'd like to read them. Vilma's name is mentioned in "Sunset Boulevard" by "Joe" who looks at Gloria Swanson's pool, now empty and rat-infested, and says that "Vilma Banky swam here 1000 midnights ago". Vlima was neither a party girl nor a swimmer and didn't keep late nights, but it's fun to hear her name mentioned.
TCM will be showing "The Son of the Sheik" on July 21, 2011 at 2:00 a.m., as part of its series on racism--this time focusing on prejudicial views towards Middle Easterners. I think this and "The Sheik" are both premiers for TCM.
I just looked up the lyrics to the song you chose--it's perfect. It's wonderful when someone can match a modern score to scenes from a classic silent film, which you have done. This makes these films so much more relevant for modern audiences.
Great vid! Wow there's so many part of this that I like, first around 0:41 when her face kinda morphs into his. Then at 1:17 where he grabs/carasses her face. He had some really sexy hands I must say. Then around 1:38...everything about that is hot lol!
Great job with this video. The music, everything. I saw this movie about 3 times. He was such a great actor. Handsome as ever. Thank you for posting..
I just read a reference in a book that the Hays Commission objected to the look on Rudy's face when he is kissing Vilma's arm--the complaint was that he looked like he was sexually aroused, which according to other references I've read, he was. I wish that some of the footage cut from his films, including the rape scene in SOS, would turn up.
@80stimeagain Well, there's some possibly good news. Apparently, Russian film companies routinely refused to return films in the silent era, and not only that, the government archived them. An agreement was reached last October about releasing them--the firs 10 titles were announced-and 3 of these were Famous Players Laskey films--not Rudy films, but from that era and that distributor. All of these films were considered "lost", so I'm hoping that "The Sainted Devil" and "Uncharted Seas" appear
@80stimeagain There are 200 of these Russian films--one of them is the Ramon Novarro film "The Arab", which Rex Ingram thought would trump "The Sheik"--it didn't, but I'd still like to see it--it has been cleaned up and is on DVD. Also, a large cache of silent films were recently discovered in Australia--some of them were William Hart films--he was Rudy's friend and appears in several photos with him. So, keep your fingers crossed. Take Care--MRF
@msrudyfan Hi, you know I had heard that Ingram tried to out do Rudy with "The Arab" staring Novarro. and it didn't work at all. Was it a big flop? Do you have any other info on it? Thanks!
@SoothingChime15 It was a "lost" film until it turned up in Russia. I'd like to see it. There was a still from it shown in "Moguls and Movie Stars". Rex Ingram said that Rudy was just a good-looking guy who was lucky to be in the right place at the right time, and that he could make any handsome Latin man a star of the same caliber. He tried this with Ramon Novarro, and it didn't work. I've seen RN in other films, incluidng a talking film. He is charming and talented, but he's no Valentino.
@msrudyfan Interesting. I can only imagine what Ingram thought when Rudy went on to become an icon without any help from him. I also recently saw Ramon in a talking film and you said it best, the first thing I thought was "Charming". When I first saw Rudy in a film and every film after that it went beyond simply charming, it was captivating and sent chills down my spine. Of course that is just my opinion, but when it comes to Valentino, I cant help it. :)
@SoothingChime15 Here's what I think: In "The Four Horsemen", which RI directed, Rudy gives Alice Terry, RI's wife, a pretty thorough chest rubbing, which RI not only had to stand there and watch, Rudy was paid to do it and it made him a star! This had to piss him off. From my reading, RI never missed a chance to irritate, annoy, insult or otherwise provoke Rudy, whose popularity and effect on women then and now was unprecedented. Men at the time HATED Rudy--check out "Song of Hate" by Durgan
@SoothingChime15 I did a little checking: RI wrote and directed "The Arab", which starred his wife, Alice Terry, along with RN. It was shot on location in Algiers--in "The Sheik", the lottery takes place in Biskra. In "Son of the Sheik", the town is Touggart--both of which are real cities in Algiers. If check out stills of RN from "The Arab", he is made up to look like Valentino. There is even a sequel to this which uses the word "sheik" in the title. RN is still no Valentino.
@msrudyfan Wow, thank you so much for the information. Personally I can't understand why Ingram would even attempt to copy what Valentino did and to try and make up Ramon to look like Rudy? What exactly did he think was going to happen?.....that everyone who fell in love with Rudy and The Sheik would just forget about it and transfer all of their feelings to Ingram's work with Ramon? But yes, I did hear that Ingram was very bitter.
@SoothingChime15 I think RI was jealous of Rudy and wouldn't give him credit for the success of his films, just like the studio. In the back story video about "The Sheik", Paramount claims that George Melford, the director, was responsible for its success. RI set out to prove that he could turn RN into another Valentino. Well, "The Arab" was a lost film until 2010 if that gives you any idea about whether he was right. He tried this also with Antonio Moreno (who?--yeah, right)
@80stimeagain By the way, if you want to read about the silent films found in Russia, check out CNN Entertainment for 10/21/10; also News from the LIbrary of Congress (same date) and America.gov for 10/27/2010. The America.gov website says that the US expects to receive all 200+ of these films in DVD format by 2012. Also, the first 10 titles include four (4) Famous Players films. Another resource I read said that there are negotiations with other countries that have stored lost silent films.
@msrudyfan Ok, I had to ask about this! :) I've heard a little about this before. Was Rudy really aroused when he did this scene, because he really does look like it. You have been so great with all of your info on Rudy. Can you tell me more about the Hays Commission objection to this and to Rudy getting turn on? Thanks again!
@SoothingChime15 I've read in several places that Rudy was aroused when doing love scenes. He isn't the only one--Gary Cooper also had this, so they had to pan high. Watch for this in GC films. There were several Hollywood scandals in the 1920's, including the Fatty Arbuckle murder case, which the moguls were afraid would derail the industry, so they hired former postmaster Will Hayes to set standards. As for this film, they couldn't condemn a film just because of the look on someone's face.
@msrudyfan I have no doubt now that Rudy put his all into his love scenes. He got so deeply into them, you can see the intensity in his face and the fact that his hands sometimes began to rove around. He really got into it! I just read about a comment that Vilma Banky made after Rudy died. She talked about how he looks at a woman so intensely before he kisses her and that she could have easily fallen in love with Rudy. She apparently was turn on too! :-)
@SoothingChime15 Pola Negri says in her book "Memoirs of a Star" that Vilma was stunningly beautiful in person. She was at some party talking with Rudy when Vilma walked up and asked him to take her home because she had an early studio call the next morning.
@80stimeagain :)) You darn right it's Rudy thats raising the temps around here but it could not have been done without your contribution! Thank you so much for posting :))
WOW!!!! LOVE IT!!!! I give it 5 stars. The music is fantastic, and like Irish says, it's a perfect match of music and mood, just like Rudy and Vilma are the perfect film match.
I'd give almost anything for Rudy to hold me and kiss me like he does with Vilma.
This is one of Rudy's better films. The last one he did. He plays a dual role as both father and son and does it quite well. Yes. Him and Vilma are good together.
We still love him, and I thank you for this unique video about Rodolfo
