I just want to point out, one of the biggest complaints that I hear about the 2009 Star Trek movie is that Kirk is portrayed as a rebel. In this episode Kirk even says he used to get into trouble when he was young. This isn't the first time I've heard him say this in The Original Series. Even by the end of the 2009 movie, Kirk seems to have already lost his rebel attitude. So when people try to say the movie destroyed Star Trek and its characters, maybe they should watch the original series.
This episode was rather prophetic. Severin reminds me of Charles Manson and his "hippie" group. Severin is vindicitve and bitter as Manson was leading a group of innocent followers. This aired 3 years before the Tate-LaBianca murders.
@ThatsMrMoronToYou well, to me it looked like she was. in the scene where the doctor is playing the music to stun them, a black girl with a haircut similiar to Uhura's falls down. it might not be her though.
Being born in '58, I can definitely relate to this episode! Granted, in the late 60's, I was not even a teenager yet, but alot of us were hippies in the 70's. Yes, we were annoying, I'm sure, but we had some lofty, idealistic goals for ourselves and the whole world. I don't remember alot of that era ( a sign of the times!), but we didn't want to be "square" (or "Herberts"). Shit. I'm a Herbert now!
In this classic episode one of the members of this hippie type people is brilliantly played by Charles Napier who's best known for his roles in such classics as Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Rambo: First Blood PT.2, & my all time favorite The Blues Brothers. He sure has a great singing voice.
nick says hippies present day and future they are stupid now and they will always be what a waste of a human life watch this episode and you will see what i mean. just a bunch of rich kids pretending to have a cause in life when they are just a bunch of lazy scumbags who never did a hard days work in their lives so thank mom and dad for giving birth to a bum and now go back to your mcmansion in ct
@yataghan2000 I must admit that these "open" minded zealots seem a bit "Herbert" to me. But to really replay to your comment, what is your cause in life? Were you assigned one when you were born? As far as laziness, of which you must mean hippies since this group was quiet efficient at holding up the ship, it is hard to work towards a goal that you detest.
The episode proves that there is one other person in the universe with a Russian accent actually worse than Chekov's...Which I had thought until now was impossible. Otherwise, the Enterprise picks up Dr. Timothy Leary and then sing folk songs all the way to Eden, jamming with Mr. Spock while the passengers try to convince the crew to "Tune in, turn on and drop out". Once on the planet they can't be convinced that the fruit (LSD-25) is deadly so they indulge and pay the price.
Hey we reach! Thats now! Its all starting to chime! Unfortunately, the space hippies got ahold of some bad space acid, and overdosed. Their space volkswagens were repossessed, and all of their space furniture was given away.
When ever this episode was on in the 80's my 13 year old brother would sing over 32:24 - 32:31 with ""let's get together and have some sex. I don't know how to do it but we're goanna do it next" LOL.
Wow, check out around 33:18. I know the knock-out-guard-take-keys thing happened quite a bit in Trek. But that was civilizations that weren't that technically advanced. Why have a cell that any old infiltrator can open just by pushing a button? Couldn't the mechanism require a code or something? Maybe Hollywood wasn't technically advanced enough then, eh?
Poor Chekov, had to give up his highschool love because he went to college while the girl didn't and got seriously into drugs and became a deadbeat. Wait that's my life..
Yeah the hippies make me laugh so much. They're why I love this episode:) Also, the jam session.
Anyways, regarding the hippies, remember that this show was popular from the 60s-70s (the peak era of the hippies in the USA). So Star Trek was appealing to a broader demographic, I guess?
I was watching the Bilbo Baggins Ballad video that Spock does today. I was laughing so hard I started to snort. It's so incredibly absurd to see SPOCK singing that song LMAO
Not to mention everyone in the video is wearing the ears except him LOL!!!
First, it's a shame that Adam died because he really had talent. Second, how did they know that that planet was Eden? Third, wouldn't the local animal life be immune to the acid grass and poison fruit? In theory those things should only be deadly to us.
32:00 Oh man that just cracks me up. I love Spock! He's the man! LOL. Only he would actually sit down and have a jam session with the most annoying people in the universe!
Pfft. When ya have no life of your own, any dimwit on crack is "Charismatic." Like evrey Goth I have asked honestly thinks Charles Manson is MORE charismatic than, say, Adolph Hitler.

The hippies of the '60s really were arrogant, they thought they had all the answers, they didn't trust anyone over 30 (ironically, they're all over 60 now), they rejected the accumulated knowledge and wisdom of the ages, and they were looking for some kind of paradise on earth. And ultimately, what they thought would be paradise turned out to be toxic.

The pins on the hippies look like boiled eggs
Loving Spock's zen vibe

And yeah, Uhura's absense is keenly

The pins are boiled eggs, back to the egg, back to the beginning. What came first the chicken or the egg?

I agree mattman, This is my favorite episode. all we need is grace slick singing two heads. Spock is cool all the way. I could picture him smoking a joint.
