my border collie only eats a grape if we crush it for her...if its whole she will put it in her mouth and spit it out. my boy border does the same. Mine are very stragee...
Grapes and raisins have often been used as treats for dogs. But it's not a good idea. Although it isn't clear why, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. And, just a small amount can make a dog ill. Repeated vomiting and being hyperactive are early signs. Within a day, the dog will become lethargic and depressed. The best prevention is to keep grapes and raisins off counters and other places your dog can reach.
thanks for your concern sarah.. i guess my two border collies and cat are genetic anomolies then, and i also assume that you have conclusive proof that grapes are the culprit to your dog's woes. I can assure *you* that my two dogs have processed through their systems more grapes than could fit into a small house. Unless you watched your dog every minute of every day, you have little proof it was grapes, but i truly appreciate your concern for your companions welfare, peace out..
@PoolerDude Chocolate's not good for dogs yet I know many people do give it to their dogs. Because they dont' drop dead on the spot doesn't mean it's ok to feed it to them. Long term, I'd be safe and listen to the vets. The grape thing being bad is news to me, though.
As for the way your dog plays with his treats, yes, my collie does the same with dog biscuits, makes a big scene every time he's given one, tossing it in the air, hiding it, fetching it, all great fun to watch.
@PoolerDude Grapes are very dangerous to dogs. It is common knowledge. I trained one of my Goldens with raisins and got away with it but any vet will tell you that raisins, grapes, avocados, chocolate etc are bad for your dog. If you really love your dog you would never do anything that even might hurt them. If ten vets say that grapes are bad for your dog and one guy on YouTube says they aren't who you gonna believe?
border collies are the most gentle of creatures aren't they? I am glad to see other dogs doing what mine do! And btw, the grape thing is an old wive's tale, not based in fact. I have two that have eaten a ton of grapes their whole lives, with no ill effect except purple poo's. Vet's don't know, and the dogs can't express their concern with a bogus diagnosis. Just ask any dog guardian who's friend supposedly has canine epilepsy. There is no such thing.

hi, i can assure you that grapes are very dangerous for dogs including collies, my collie nearly died from eating grapes and now has a problem with his blood because of the damage it caused, its best not to let your dog get the taste for grapes so he doesnt search them out.i wont allow grapes in the house now, thankfully jack my collie is ok now,and your right they are fantastic dogs.
It's the seeds in the grapes that are really bad for them, and you can get seedless grapes... but like Mofocadlak said, "Best to not risk it and just stay away from them".
didn't know about the grape being dodgy, but I know this works with all sorts of fruits, my border/spaniel cross is obsessed by mandarin/satsuma segments
hey just a heads up grapes are bad for dogs if they have more the 7 they could die. i used to give my collie a grape and she would do the same thing ,but now i use nuts she loves it
You gave your dog a grape and you videotape it and put it on Youtube. Do you know grapes are like giving a dog posion. This dog should be taken away from you
A lot of people don't know that, though. There should be some sort of campaign to spread awareness about toxic foods and pets, since it seems it's not actually common knowledge.
Suck a cute dog! Although grapes are bad for them and chocolate and raisens and a bunch more. You shouldn't give it too him but very nice dog. Mine is 5 years old!
Thank you for pointing that out. I saw the title of this video in the "Related Videos" bar and had to come say the same thing... Glad you already did!
My border collie can't accept a dog biscuit without making a big scene out of it.
He tosses it in the air, then when it lands, runs round it like he's rounding up sheep, crouches down, barks at it, rounds it a few times, then eventually eats it.
Great dogs border collies, make everything a game.
@Mofocadlak :(( my dog ate a grape. (only 1) she always climbs on our dining table and gets food. :((( i don't want her to die. can she still live if i take her to the vet??? :(((((
@SJlover111 nothing to do now. I would not worry but don't let her get any more. I found out about grapes when mine ate some and out of curiosity I checked into whether they are dangerous.
@Mofocadlak okay... but i saw a video about foods that are bad to dogs... the grapes can make them uhmm... don't like to eat or lose their appetite... but my dog still eats a lot... is it okay?
Uh oh I guess I won't be giving my dog anymore grapes. BUT! when I used to give my border collie grapes she did basically the same thing. She would run off with it, play with it and then hide it under a pillow as if she was burying it or saving it for later. Such a funny girl!
my ausiies got into a tub of chocolate, and they had diarrhea .......thats it, and i give them grapes, but you need to pop them first. Grapes are dangerous becuse the dogs stomach will try to pass them and they will get lodged in their plumbing.. and this can cause severe stomach pain and death in some cases,
Grapes are extremely toxic to dogs, you are lucky she didn't fall VERY ill. Same with raisins. These are much more toxic than theobromine, which is the toxic chemical in chocolate. Or at least it takes less.
its the coco bean in the chocolate tht kills them, maybe the donut hasnt tht much or maybe cos its full of sugar they pass it through quicker, but if you give them a bar of choclate thts what will kill em.
my collie ate everything in sight. these people are paranoid. My Golden ate a while chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and she went jogging with me the next morning, didn't effect her at all. she loved it!
@brf1310 the cases reported were very small dogs that had eaten a large amount (2lbs+) of *raisins*, in other worlds to reach toxic level on a larger dog it would necessitate 10-20lbs of grapes, a dog eating a few grapes is not and will never be an issue
BAD, NO, STOP IT.THIS IS EXTREAMLY DANGEROUS FOR YOUR DOG. EVEN IF IT IS A BIG DOG, THINGS LIKE, CHCOLATE, GRAPES, RAISINS, AND ONIONS CAN KILL YOU BORDER COLLIE! Even if it is only a little bit at a time this can build up to some serious, painful health problems.
He looks a lot like mine. You should never let a dog eat grapes or raisins. they are toxic and can kill a dog. same with tylenol, chocolate, and onions, Doc
