  • Is this the famed Ed Haley fiddle?

  • try Silver Lake( from Mose Coffman), and Pattyroller (Melvin Wine's ver.)

    for more in that tuning.

  • Genius

  • Dan Gellert also does an amazing version of Old Sledge. It's on his new CD. Anybody recall the tuning this is played in?

  • i think its aeac#......sledgey

  • (1) The tuning for Old Sledge is AEAD (coarse to fine). Other than Old Sledge and another tune (whose name escapes me), both of which were collected from Burl Hammons, I can't think of any other tunes in this tuning.

  • (2) It's sort of an odd tuning, one I don't think you would have come up with analytically, which makes me think someone was changing from AEAE to AEAC# (or vice versa) when they came up with it. There are a couple of Blind Blake pieces with unusual guitar tunings that I think originated the same way.

  • (3) Also: "Old Sledge" is a name for the card game better known as seven-up, which was quite popular in the 19th century, and I've always wondered whether that was the origin of the name of this tune...

  • Hey, thanks for the info! I did send Bruce a message and link when I posted these and didn't hear anything back... so I assume it's ok with him. I always ask the venue before recording, and would take down anything that an artist asked me to.

  • You've done him a service, this clip has persuaded me to see him in Menai Bridge next month. Thanks for posting.
