  • Why the hell wasn't anybody helping him while he was alive? Who would give a known drug addict 25,000 dollars? His friends were using him for his talent and didn't give a shit about him.

  • I LOL at everyone comparing him to Ivey and Dwan. The game changed a lot since he played. A lot. It got a lot tougher to win tournaments with a huge player pool and all the smart kids around. Ivey and Dwan will do fine against him I think.

  • Ive got my edge back. Thx to some stu study...

  • I still say they need to make another movie about stuey but more on his talent opposed to his short comings!

  • His death was a conspiracy. He was taken out by other pros to increase their winnings. I know this because I'm Doyle's second stepcousin in law.

  • Naturally there are those who come close to Stu as poker players. Just as there are boxers who come close to Ali, or basketball players who come close to Jordan. However, regardless of how close they get , I believe that Stu is still the best ever. If you had him play each potential challenger for an extended period of time, (so that there is no luck factor to speak of) I believe he would come out on top overall.

  • This is an alright example of who Stu was and what he did, but it does not come close to showcasing his incredible abilities. I would suggest anybody doubting him to find some more detailed videos that describe how he could soul-read everyone, how he was banned from playing BJ at most casinos because he would always win so much, how he would walk down the street handing out $100 bills etc... Pretty interesting stuff and amazing man, to say the least.

  • @sportsfever420 Very well said Sportsfever420, at last someone who appreciates true talent and gives Stuey his due credit, Stuey was AMAZING!

  • Phil ivey is NOTHING compared to Stu Ungar, Period.

  • poker is for suckers. for every stu ungar and johnny chan there are a thousand suckers who just throw their cash away. only the casino is a consistent winner.

  • @johndavis550 Poker is Player vs Player game party, not a Player vs Casino.

  • RIP Legend

  • Mike Sexton is a good guy and although Stuey had his ills (as we all do), I agree we should remember him for his `geatness on the green felt...as the greatest no limit poker player ever" ;

  • @8bobthebuilder Very well said about Stuey 8bobthebuilder, whatever personal demons Stuey tried to cope with and used drugs to blot out the pain of reality, he still achieved great things and cemented an unquestionable place as a true Legend of the Game.

  • Stu was a boss. Years ahead of his time.

  • Stu:I wanna tell ya somethin for a fact, nobody has ever beat me at cards, the only1 that has ever beat me was myself...LEGEND!

  • stu ungar was and is the best of all time because when he wanted to win he would WIN the whole damn tournament. not second, third, 27th. he would WIN.

  • i'll say his daughter grew up, omg! dammmm

  • Estimated 30 million down $800 bucks...i got choked up hearing that......really!!!

  • I'm sorry, but he has to be the ugliest person I've ever seen in my life, and I swear to God I'm not exaggerating

  • @iDraw3G

the membrane in his nose collapsed due to excessive cocaine use.

  • im not talking about merely cashing, im talking about winning the whole thing, wsop overall winner, how many times has Ivey WON it ???? NONE!

  • ivey blew his wsop chance and came 8th! LOL

  • does ivey have a genius IQ? no, beat the best players at 16 years old? no

  • Ungar would rip Ivey apart

  • @memyselfandeye3 i agree stuey was special but lets look at it this way he won bracelets with fields of 100 players, far less competition! Also if ivey's has accumulated over 10 million in earnings in this day and age then its safe to say with a lesser field of comp he would have made just as much as stuey if put in that era. BUT!! i will say this, if stuey had no drug addiction and focused on poker and poker only i think he would have 15 bracelets and over 100 million or better in winnings..

  • @foolioperez i agree with alot you say, you have a very balanced view but do not understand how tough the players were back then, yes Stuey has smaller fields but back then they had far more accomplished players & a lot less Donks in the Wsop, thousands more amateurs who cannot play but have been enticed to enter the Wsop due to the Money-maker effect and online boom, alot of the players stuey was playing were real killers like johny moss, jay heimowitz etc, i agree with most of your views tho.

  • @foolioperez i agree this years wsop had around 7,000 entrants and maybe 500 were solid players.....point taken!

  • @foolioperez thumbs up! its more of a bingo-lottery type situation now : a real shame, thousands of newbies and raw amateurs, theres about the number u suggest which are hardcore players, old-school, well knowns-the usual suspects and the online players chancing their hand at live play, makes for a long and interesting-sometimes-Wsop, times change and many players have to adjust to the vey deep field format, just wish we could watch Stuey doing what he did best, decimating the field with style :)

  • those classic blue shades i want them.

  • he is jimi hendrix of poker... Such a sad story

  • ...and Stuey knocked out Andrew(andy) Black too...as well as Ron Stanley, Mel Judah etc, and Phil Hlemuth bluffed-off 200,000 worth of chips to Stueys amazing reading abilities, Go Stuey!

  • how come ungar's daughter's skin colour went from clear white to a dark tone?

  • @Dbkim92 it's a well diagnosed condition called 'reverse MJ syndrome'

  • Sexton's look from 7:58 says it all

  • 3 WSOP championship's. Never happen again!!

  • Ivey would dismantle that kid.

  • @HamricJosh Dunno, in 1997 wsop Stu was on a table with Hellmuth, Brunson, Baxter, Ferguson and he destroyed them all

  • @fearlessftw Oh no! Ivey would not stand a chance against those guys!

  • @HamricJosh You obviously know nothing about Stu Ungar, his abilities and achievements, how many WSOPs has Phil Ivey won then ? Stuey+3 WSOPs, Phil Ivey= Zero. And thats just for starters.

  • @memyselfandeye3 Ivey has 0 bracelets? Really?

  • Stu Ungar, Bobby Fisher etc were the true masters of their game and showed the world a blaze of fearsome Genius...

  • my first impression of stu ungar was that he drug addict, but now i just think of him as the greatest poker player ever just like Bobby Fischer, they both had personal problems which is sad, but they deffinately the greatest players ever, without them there would be no legends in chess and poker

  • @onlypedro ever heard of blinds?

  • SECRET ADVANTAGES OF A POKER PRO is the best book about pro poker! its on amazon and barnes n noble

  • Stu Ungar was the Greatest, Bar None.

  • @bobbya16 yup....but we could say the same thing for another GOAT (except jew) and thats Michael Jeffrey Jordan.

  • how many wsops did Chip win? none, and i saw phil ivey go out first day in a recent tourney, hes not as good as people think he is, hes inconsistent at times but has a good B-game, hes nothing compared to Stuey, theres a reason why Stu ungar is a total legend, find out more about him m8, i agree that Chip reese was an Amazing player, no doubt about that, but remeber what Doyle Brunson said about Stuey, he said Stuey was the Winningest player he ever saw. Enough said.

  • Non_USA_players_sign_up_at_Full_Tilt_Poker_with_referral_code:FTUS600_and-you_will_get_a_600$_signing_bonus

  • Wow I never really knew about this guy till today -( and I'm obsessed by poker so that fact is amazing lol) this guy is amazing though..

  • STU Ungar was the greatest player of all time, and Phil ivey etc take second place to him.

  • GOTTA LOVE THIS DUDE !!!!

  • The kid man the best of the best even though he took his life fast the way he played poker no one will ever comp him ever the only one i think is just as good and plays like him is phil ivey..

  • the guy in the above video/docu who calles stu ungar " stu ball" is/was a las vegas Card dealer in the Casinos, his name is Tony Sheldon.

  • Sexton= Class Act

  • There are two versions of the above docu, this one where there are no on-screen titles telling the viewer who is who, and the version i have where it has titles, different still-pictures, the guy who says "how long is stu-ball gonna last?", this guy is a poker historian and ex-bookie, as far as i know

  • Who is the guy with the blue shirt, sports jacket, and mustache sitting at the poker table being interviewed for this piece?

  • @lpenwell ive wondered the same thing. it looks like he ran with stuey alot. he looks like a player, but ive never seen or heard about him

  • Who is the guy with the blue shirt, sports jacket, and mustache sitting at the poker table being interviewed for this piece?

  • STU ball!!!

  • Just got done reading his book "One of a kind"......wow. What an amazing story with a tragic end. I'm not gonna lie, my eyes were pretty sweaty when I put it down.

  • @dabombbizzle im assuming thats a bio on stu? this book you read?

  • @dabombbizzle "one of a kind" is probably the best book ive read in a long time. for those who havent checked it out, read it. at least read chapters 14 and 15 which explains stu's journey through and beyond the 1990 wsop. that tournamnet for stu was truly something else and the heads up match with mansour matloubi (1990 wsop champ) that followed contains what may be the greatest call in poker history.

  • i bet stu unger had a big hart and alot f skill, but cocaine fu cked him up!

  • The greatest to ever do it. RIP Stuey

  • Theres nothing like enjoying a true classic of the art and sport of poker, wish i could join you sneak108, keep a few chilled ones on ice, just in case :)

  • THANK SNEAK108, people need to know what a true LEGEND and ARTIST Stu Ungar was and how he would destroy anyone today, including the so-called greats of our contemporary era like Phil Ivey and the over-estimated Tom Dwan, they need to study the past and give Stuey his due, just like Mike Sexton said, when Stuey first turned up on the scene in Vegas, Stuey beat everyone, and that means everyone, all the greats of the time : Puggy Pearson, Johnny moss ,Doyle Brunson, the list goes on and on.

  • @memyselfandeye3 hey buddy tonight on espn classic is the 1997 wsop final table when stuey wins his last one. im taping it!

  • i agree " the nostradamus9", Stuey decimated the field and rampaged to the final table, picking his opponents off like fleas from a dog, even after 16 years of hard living, massive drug use and partying, Stuey showed the poker world that he was still the GREATEST, Phil Hlemuth had it right, and phil of course was knocked out of the '97 Tourney by Stu Ungar himself, what a year and what a player, Stu Ungar was a LEGEND above legends...

  • @memyselfandeye3 well said. i think its time for gabe kaplan to come back and do the commentating on main event

  • 6:52 thumbs up if you noticed this gentleman is missing a finger?

  • Tom DWAN is nobody COMPARED TO stu ungaR, JTNugget, ur telling me Dwan has better reading ability, skill and natural talent than STU UNGAR, go back to the freeRoll Newbie, HAHAHA !

  • @memyselfandeye3 Stu ungar is the greatest no limit hold em and the greatest Gin rami player of all time!Dwan is just a biatch if they battle one one with stuey, stuey will just kill him! Just watch in you tube the WSOP main event final table of 1997, and watch why even broken with cocaine, he is the greatest.

Phil hellmuth just said during this game, in the beigenning that this is a race for the 2nd place cause Stuey is unbeatable in the green field !!

  • Comment removed

  • Just imagine if Steuy had NEVER taken drugs: he would still be ALIVE with about 15-20 bracelets, be worth over $100 million dollars, and have at least 5 wsop wins, and thats just for starters! R.I.P Stuey.

  • Mike Sexton is indeed a class act.

  • stu ungar won the first world championship he ever entered, and the last!! just another un beatable feat....

  • I agree Sneak 108, the fact he won back to back in 1980 and ,81 was amazing, the only reason he didnt defend the next year was because he had to jet around to defend a court case when it was alleged he capped a bet in 1982, he would have defended successfully in that year if it wasnt for that, and as you say he came back in 1997 and won again, especially after all the addiction and heartache, who else but Stuey could possibly do that? he was One of A Kind, just like the title of his biography..

  • Heres what i like and find fascination about stu compared to everyone else. All of the few who have multiple world championships did it in a short window. like 3 years or less. And stuey picked up his 3rd 16 years later. and just about a year before he died. very fascinationg. It does make him stand alone. and all the demons he fought compared to everyone else. just amazing...

  • thanks Sneak198, Stu was truely terrifying at cards, a collassal talent, just imagine sitting across the table from him ? lol :)

  • @sklljmnnj more like...12

  • @tedwilli9 yep 12,I was lashed today

  • I repeat, Stu Ungar would CRUSH Tom Dwan, Dwan always relys on ridiculous bluffs at the best of times, remember what Phil Hlemuth said about Stuey in the 1997 wsop, phil bluffed off over 200, 000 chips to Stuey cus Stu saw thru all his bluffs, Stuey was magnificent in spotting bluffs, tells and all the emotions of deception in between, sorry " GIX500", sTU would make Dwan look like the pretender to the throne he so patently is, Stu Ungar was the greatest card player who ever lived, bar none !

  • @memyselfandeye3 i love tom. but i agree... no contest. this guy is way to disciplined at poker.

  • i think it would be about even money dwan v stu, theres a limit to how much better u can be, allready not alot of money in holdem today, coz the game is too easy to learn today, all the best plays mixed games or PLO , or others. i think stu would reraise dwan and dwan would make good calls sometimes and bad calls other times, but i think it would be atleast close to even money between them

  • Stu Ungar would CRUSH Tom Dwan, it wouldnt even be close.

  • If stu ungar didn't get addicted to drugs and had good bankroll management he would be treated like a poker god today. It would be interesting to see if how he would rate vs players like Tom Dwan. I think we would have a system crash like in the matrix.

  • What happened to that dudes right forefinger? 6:53

  • @GuerreroBestEver You've never even done coke if you did you should know how hard it is to quit.

  • @GuerreroBestEver

So you just went to rehab a couple of days and then it was all over right? easy as pie.

  • makes a grown man cry...so sad such a legend infact he goes behond legend.

  • this was a great piece on him

  • mafia inc soon with the real bar in regards to this apostate endeavor thread.

  • sextons look just broke my heart

  • Keith McCready!

  • @albert333pool A SHAME HE LOOKS LIKE KEITH RICHARDS -BUT RICHARDS IS STILL WITH US )RIP STU!!

  • Wish Stuey was still alive and kickin it would be fun to watch him multi table online poker.

  • Stuey was banned from casinos playing blackjack initially, he won over a million dollars doing this till they circulated his picture everywhere, dont let this guy in, hell bankrupt us! ( i can imagine the casino managers saying, lol)

  • i agree thepud like playing against a computer guy had a 185 iq with a photographic memory, like rainman. so good he memorized card decks and was banned from casinos

  • Stuey would still be steamrolling WSOP events if he was still here. One thing that hasn't changed is that Poker is still about people, and reading people was Stuey's gift.

  • "thats why he lived another ten or 15 years longer than he did live" drrrrrrr

  • what country did he come from

  • LEGEND

  • Comment removed

  • stu ungar earned an estimated --- $30 million dollars---, not ponds, i correct myself :)

  • stu ungar WAS a genius, but who says a genius has to live a perfect life without flaws? just talk to those who were around Stuey, his friends, family opponents and just the normal guy in the street, stuey was totally unique, he won an estimated £30 million dollars before he died (age 45) and this was before the multi-million dollar tourneys of the contemporary era, give the man his due, no-ones life runs exactly how we want it to, genius or not. R.I.P Stu Ungar.

  • @memyselfandeye3 Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplan, Bon Scott, James Dean, Jim Morrison, River Phoenix, the list goes on and on. RIP to all those Ive mentioned and everyone I missed. Life is hard and some play HARDER hats off to all them. Josh Evins a local skateboarding LEGEND where im from just left us at at to young an age. RIP Josh. Peace to all the real people who live their LIVES the way they please not to please anyone elses IDEAS Peace to doing what you love no matter what

  • @IveGotTheNuts ...James Dean should not be in that list of junkies...

  • @airasweetie you haven't proven your point. he WAS a genius, and like most geniuses, they think they can control EVERYTHING. But, they can't. Look at Bobby Fischer. I mean, some people just can't handle their own genius (especially the losing part, they can't help thinking that they could ever lose to non-geniuses) It's an actual complex.

  • @tedwilli9 i´m just saying why look up to someone with a brain that can´t even control their brilliance! i don´t even look up to madonna even though she´s clearly someone with a brain cause she´s got an eating disorder ( no one with a sain mind looks like her, over worked out and got an empire that she´s been able to build up). so you are saying you can´t have one with the other? no one is perfect, but at least you should be able to control your sainess with or with out a brain!

  • Comment removed

  • @airasweetie Sain-sainess what's that??????Did you mean SANE,lol.Take a spelling class you MUTT.You couldn't even carry STU UNGERS jock strap that held his BIG BALLS.R.I.P STU

  • @airasweetie lol so being a "Genius" means youre invincible now? Even superman was vulnerable to kryptonite.... Stu was a great man with an unbelievable record.. He was a genius, just had a lot of setbacks.. thats what made it really sad...

  • He was also a sick gin/rummy player! RIP Stu!

  • they say all you need to win is a chip and a chair, stuey only needs a chair

  • Stu Ungar............. there has never been anyone like him and there never will be again; a unique, hard not to love individual that dealt with the difficulties of life but rose above his own demons one last time showing his true colors/ability- the best NO LIMIT player ever,- one of a kind. We all have demons........ he fought his as long as his heart would let him;t, didn't live a life of perfection in all aspects but who does?- Gone, but never forgotten- Stu the Kid Ungar!

  • LEGEND!

  • addiction is addiction, whether it is primarily physical or mental, it overpowers everyone in the end, and takes the legs from under seemingly undefeatable giants, stuey was a true genius and an undoubted legend, stueys peerless ability, blistering intellect and mathamtical ablity have been unsurpassed even to this day, let us remember this individual as the great person he was, and stories about how warm his personality was are legendary, R.I.P. Stu Ungar.

  • @memyselfandeye3

    Well said! Voted up:)

  • probably would have 20-25 bracelets by now..maybe more

  • the warmth and love of stueys spirit lives on, his personal generosity and positivity had a huge effect on many people while he was alive and still does to this day, his life and remrkable achievments should be celebrated not mourned, he was a living miracle with peerless gifts and a stratospheric IQ and talent, we shall not see someone like this again, a unique and amazing man.

  • "I've done a lot of stupid things in my life but I want to tell you one thing for a fact no1 ever beat me playing cards the only person that ever beat me was myself."

    LEGEND

  • stu ungar is a KING among princes, he was poker ( and gin rummy!) royalty, and his legacy is timeless! R.I.P. stuey.

  • ya its a shame that he was addicted to illegal drugs like cocaine if he wasn't he prolly would still be dominating tournaments and may be regarded as the best player ever. A lot of people still think he is the best ever even though he didn't play for a lot of years.

  • @bigbling83 The worst thing about it is cocaine in no way shape or form is physically addicting it is only mentally addicting, it has no physical withdrawl systoms as narcotics such as heroin or morphine do and that's why it is not classified as a narcotic but a stimulant. I will admit it is a powerful mental addiction it causes but it is also one of the easier additions to beat when compared to other drugs or even cigarettes or alcohol for that matter...

  • why did his son commit suicide????

r.i.p. he was a great player!!!

  • That is sad :-( R I P what a touching story!

  • this dude could be living the life right now. it's too bad.

  • yes beskrok, mike is a well deserving and worthy champion and intern in the Poker Hall Of Fame, my heartfelt congratulations to mike sexton! well done Mike! :)

  • stefanie ungar is so beautiful.

  • @MrPerki77

    no?

  • @MrPerki77 are you kidding, shes disgusting

  • @disfiguration whats wrong with you

  • please, watch "Stu" or"The Highroller", with M. Imperioli. that is so fucking good movie.

  • i guess that expression is true, "its the finest blades that are the most easily blunted bent or broken"

  • the "1980 " WSOP..... i meant, lol

  • perhaps there was some strong competetiveness between stu and gabe and some personal bitterness on gabes side, for mr kaplan wa the favorate to win the 10980 WSOP but stu steamrollered him and made Gabe the bubble boy when Gabe was in the chiplead earlier on, but i think they were pretty good friends as far as i know.

  • Stuey was the best, I support everything he did.

  • would really like to see Tom Dwan v Stu Ungar heads up match

  • @Manchester27union In 5 years Drrrrrr will be flipping burgers.THAT'S A FACT

  • @betandwin100 if stu was alive and he played tom heads up durrr would be flipping his last nickles before losing them to the untouchable legendary legacy stuart errol ungar himself. that's a fact

  • mike sexton is nothing but classy

  • @spmrulez YES SIR

  • He was all-in

  • what's the title of the song that starts at 4.28?

  • RIP Stu Ungar
