@SinoSene He does Boris in Zürich regularly I saw him in 2008 doing a fantastic job. He is in his 60s now but the voice is as great as ever and of course with his size he fills half the stage. Matti is one of the greatest bassos ever and noone today can match him as King Mark or Fasold. Last year also in Zürich did Rocco alternating with Polgar. I hope he will keep performing. One of the "permanent" assets of the Zürich opera.
Of course the phrasing is much quicker, but it was not the intent of Mussorgsky to go much slower. If you listen to the Russian productions, they produce it much slower. This also a characteristic of the Italian Opera's. This singer has a very strong voice, sounds like Boris Christov.
Amazing performance from chorus, orchestra, Matti, and the superb and energetic conducting from Maestro Mehta!

Listen to the vercion of Golovanov "a mussorgsky conductor" of the bolshoi (died in 1953).
His tempo is very fast, and in the "slava! slava! slava!" (glory in russian) they olmost screaming without any brakes!
It is wonderful!
