It did not come with the dawn of AI. It did not come with the insertion of the human consciousness into the net. It did not come with Augmented Reality.
It has slowly slid into the background... And it's our last hoorahs at the Wild West that is the Internet.

People don't seem to grasp the concept of AI really well. Sentience means that there will be a point where our creations will act outside of our control on their own whims.

However, while most cyberpunkt "worlds" are those dystopian types, there are also the ones that are a bit brighter then others. for example Deus Ex, Ghost in the shell. My definiton of cyberpunk consists of High Technology, Mega Corps and Hackers. and because of that, I don't consider our time as Cyberpunk since there is still a lot missing and thats way I said we're merely in the beginning. It's not like a video game like you'd think. It's what I call a "Story game" basically I'd start off with the beginning of a story and somebody else would add a paragraph or two that would continue the story and then somebody else would add a part and it would just keep going. Scanner darkly is a cyberpunk film and it is set 7 years from 2006 that makes it in 2013.
I have never seen that cyberpunk should be in 2040.
