This is the highest airport in England and subject to vicious crosswinds on a regular basis. My daughter's flight landed there in May and said it was terrifying, she thought they were going to crash. The pilot aborted the landing once and said that if he had to do it a second time they would have to divert to another airport.
Pilots need to make a heavy landing on a wet runway to break the surface of the water. If they didn't do this, the plane would end up aquaplaning down the runway across the wet surface and eventually run off the end.
In this type of heavy rain is it possible for an aircraft landing to aquaplain on the water? or is an aircraft to heavy? Has it ever been known to happen?
@sastemro You know I'm sure I was on the same flight,I must admit I was frightened,if it was the same flight did it appear that the pilot was undershooting the runway then gave it 3/4 thrust to compensate then drop it down heavily slamming the air brakes and reverse thrust on because he had landed too fast? Thanks for the posting I didn't know anyone on board was filming.
Thats a perfect landing in those conditions. It landed pretty well in those conditions, hit the centre line and braked well in advance, meaning the pilots dont have to spin it at the end of 14/32.
no no it is a nice landing cos of wet runway, it is a prosedure cos u don't want ur plane drift in wet runway :) u have to put the wheel hard to runway
surely because leeds/bradford airport is quite a small 1 in relation to alot of other airports, the pilot would need to sit the plane down alot quicker anyway because of he shorter runway and shorter braking distance, just a thought.
Pilots are encouraged to make a "positive touchdown" in wet runway conditions to push any water on the runway out of the way of the tires. At the high speeds at which aeroplanes are landing its possible to get aquaplaning which seriously reduces braking action.
in weather like that it was prob an autoland so had nothing to do with the pilot the autopilot flares the aircraft retards the throttle, so auto lands are normaly quite heavy
I don't think it was an autoland. the visibility looked above even cat I ILAS minima, but raher the wind shear and gusts could've caused the hard landing.
hey, its not an auto land. Bradford airport doesn't have cat 3 ILS. its nomal landing, with the autobrakes and auto- spolier implied. The runway seems to be wet so the reverse thruster is being engaged upon 100 kts.
Pilots are encouraged to touchdown as soon as possible, particularly in bad weather even if this does mean slightly 'hard'. Aircraft is designed to withstand this sort of landing and most landings are smooth purely for aesthetics and passenger comfort. Nice video.
If you are going to build an airport on top of a hill then there will be rough landings!! - I have landed at leeds on numerous occasions and can say never had a smooth one!!
i have a question... i am 13 at the moment and i am hoping on becoming a pilot when i am a little older... i do however experience some slight headaches after take off in planes very often... do pilots usually have these slight headaches? can i still become a pilot?
Hey mate. Good luck with your flying career! If you pass an examination by doctors called the "Class 1 medical", then you are medically fit to Hold a CPL/ATPL (your commercial pilots licenses) and work as a pilot in the governments eyes.

Landing hard in the rain/wind is actually a good thing. The last thing you want in that situation is to let the plane get loose on a wet runway. It's actually taught in flight school.
No you dumb fucks it was a heavy landing because Sharon Smith and Tracy taylor from Pudsey were sat in aisle 14 and they weigh 50 stone a piece, fortunately they had both taken a shit at the other end before getting on the plane so the flight was at least 2 stones lighter.

@ Resolving well id rather the pilot make a go-around then make a heavy landing, 1. the planes wings could fall off. 2. the plane could split in too. 3. it could skid off the runway.4.the wind could make the planes wing bank to the right or left and hit the ground killing a lot of people, yes i know these things dont happen often but still why take a risk when you can make a go-around and land with any problems
Having flown into LBA a few times that looks fine to me & even if it had of been a rough landing you should be thankful because the pilot & first officer used their skills & expertise to bring you down well in less than perfect conditions
because there are some pilots on here...i would like to say some of you are bastards for wacking thrust reversers on....can you guys not come all the way to the other side of the runway so every one near that grave yard spot can have a better look....:D
It wasn't fast or heavy. Its a wet, short runway, that's how you are supposed to land. Still impressed about how you back seat drivers know the airspeed from row 16 or your desk. Really fed up of idiots offering 'informed' opinions on aviation.
That isn't a heavy landing at all, as anyone who's flown into LBA more than five times knows. And the aircraft wasn't coming in too quick. If it had been far too fast on final, it would have gone around. Airlines simply don't risk 230 lives for the sake of burning another ton of fuel executing a go-around. There was no problem with either the approach or landing whatsoever.
I'd rather have the pilot make a "hard landing" in severe WX then stay in the air trying to make a "perfect" landing and encounter microburst/windshear and end up with a crash instead.
I think it was not hard...It just sounded. If this is a 757 or a 767 they always sound hard when they land. I sat on the last row ona 747 landing in CDG and it was a very smooth landing, but still it sounded like a hard landing. It looked normal, but yeh, the pilot could have flared a tad more. But good landing anyway. I think so passengers take it that the pilots should always make a nice landing, but they sometimes forget that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing... :)
Only cells phones and computers are an issue. They constant send and receive data wirelessly. Pilots use ILS or Instrument Landing System on approach to a runway. They're using radio signals to guide the plane in on the correct path. The fear is that cell phones/computers can hamper it. Video cameras don't send or receive wireless signals.
I know mate. But you are still required to shut off all electronic devices prior to departure and take off. Actually, the amount of emf interference that actually makes it through to the instrumentation is extremely small, the atmospheric radiation interference affects the circuitry many times more than a cell phone would (as long as it wasnt pressed up to the instrument of course.
I landed at LBA last Christmas on a flight from Prague and the landing was scariest I have ever seen. It was thick fog and we couldnt even see the runway out of the window when we were on it!
