This is one of the best games I've never beat. Luckily enough I still have a copy although I will need to get my hands on a PS1 Memory card to play.
The music in this game is so good that you don't have to use some other song to make an AMV. Oh and go away haters, the graphics in this game were great for the time and still look appealing today. Things don't have to be cutting edge tech to look nice

This game starts off as just a game but ends as an emotional experience. It is amazing how a game, now considered "dated", without voice overs could ever generate such sentiment.
One of the most underrated RPG's ever. I mean whenever anyone talks about best RPG's of all time it always turns into whats your favorite FF. This and Legend of Dragoon are as good if not better than any FF out there. Both games were totally unique
I don't think any console will ever top the ps1 in terms of the best jrpg/rpg's ever made. I mean if you grew up with a ps1 and think thats not true, your lying to yourself. Chrono Cross, Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Legend of Mana, Valkyrie Profile, Grandia, Xenogears, etc etc etc. I DARE you to beat a line up like that.
The PS1 was great but imo the Snes era was just as good if not better for RPGS. However I agree that after the PS1 was when the magic left gaming, RPGs today just aren't as fun.
Anyways my Snes line up would be Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 3/6, Secret of Mana 1 and 2, Chrono Trigger, FF4/2, Illusion of Gaia,Secret of Evermore, and earthbound.
I too grew up with the PS1 and FF7 is my favorite game of all time, but FF7 aside I think the snes is on par with the ps1
I think the SNES might give the PSX a run for it's money. FF 6, FF4, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Lufia 2, Super Mario RPG etc. I think a lot of PSX games took what was great in a lot of SNES games and improved it.
I think we can all agree that this generation of games by and large sucks with few exceptions the magic and wonder is gone. The technology is better but part of what made these games so great is they left things up to our imagination. Faces, voices, expressions etc.
@Varicent I always knew that not only me understand that magical world of jrpg/rpg's on ps1. All titles and many more that you wrote are completed in 100% by me. Even now under my tv is old ps1 with almost all titles which somebody like me or you should have. Sometimes between work and my fiancee I am coming back for that times for some long hours of playing, mostly late in the evening. That will never die.
@Varicent Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Breath of Fire I and II, Chrono Trigger (The entire reason Cross exists), Secret Of Mana, Super Mario RPG, Lufia I and II, and I'm not even going to BEGIN to get into the JRPG list for the SNES. ;) But yeah, it was around 1995-2005 that the RPG generation had the magic. As soon as things hit mainstream more (around the time of PS2), good RPG's with these kinds of stories became harder and harder to find.
Quite frankly, at the rate Square Enix is plummeting would rather much appreciate a Chrono Cross/Trigger HD remake than a Final Fantasy VII HD remake. For that, I would gladly spend 60 USD + tax to play that same, yet still epic game.
Graphics adds a feeling to a game, but without a good story and gameplay, the game wouldn't be much more than a fancy interactive video. You can't really compare a PSX game to a PS3 game, PSX only had that much graphics (and sound) to press into a 700mb disc (much is copied from other discs, like animations, textures, models and sound) and also be able to add story and gameplay. In today's workspace, 700mb is not even enough to amount all sounds in a game, you'd need 10 at least for graphics.
i just bought a ps3. i tried fallout 3, , ffxiii, oblivion iv, dragon age, demon's souls, mass effect 2. none of them held my attention for more than a few hours. all of them have state of the art graphics but has no feel to it. developers are feeding the newer generations. i remember playing this game back in early 2000 for a bit at a friends house and was CAPTIVATED. I'm off to return all those worthless games and on to buy me a 13 dollar ps1 game. ffxiii versus seems promising though.

DAmn you guys are so hooked up into ps3 graphics that you forget that this was made almost 20 years ago when the technology still isn't that good. But still this is one of the games that got a 10/10 rating. PS3 games? I spent countless months listening to this song and learning how to copy and play it on, as follow. Guitar, Bass, Flute, Ocarina (don't ask), Violin and finally Viola. LIFE WELL SPENT!
I wish the developers at Square Enix would just spend one afternoon referrencing some information from the Chrono series to see just why we al love them so much and then turning that teensy bit of awesome against the tidal wave of fail that is the last 2 Final Fantasy games.
This was so kick ass next to final fantasy 7. This game has so much emotions wish it was longer than 40 hours needs to be over 100 hundred hours. One the best games ever made for play station.
Oh come on guys the story in this game is goofy as fuck. Dont hold it up like a paragon. Its an amazingly fun game with an amazing set of graphics for its time and the sound track is inspiring but the story is a gobblygook mess. Great characters. Messy story.

The "messy" story is what makes Chrono Cross so good, is too, fucking, adictive.
The whole soundtrack to this game is so passionate (also the game itself). If only people that don't like video games that much could realize the beauty in any song whether for a game, movie, or for fun. It's still art and I for one will never forget this game.

@009fan1 Yeah pretty much, well IMO ff10-2 is pretty good, only ff4 ff10 and ff13 had the success of making another one, a sequel. And ff10 is heartbraking, for me though. Still ff8 is da best! haha I bought it on my ps3 and it still kicked ass. and for ff13 yeah, far from good compared to the classics, And if you have a psp I recommend you to play the dissidia 1 and 012 the storyline is damn amazing, for me though.
Yeah man, I have FF games I dont like but I dont think Square has ever made a bad Final Fantasy game, it's just that sometimes their new ones are nowhere near as good as their old ones

I don't know about the online, but the story is pretty much well made, the problem is they made too good of a classic that the new ones can't surpass them.
This game is so epic, I have two copies, one unopened, the other in pristine condition, not a single scratch on it! I plan on playing it again soon. I normally don't play video games on my PS2 very often and scarcely long, but I've literally spent like 12 hours per day on that game, it used up my ENTIRE weekend, and my only regret is that I beat the game so fast :(

this was a great game it had all the right elments to it I wish that they would make more games with the same passion that they had when they made this one and several more of the older rpg games. Because most rpgs nowadays suck and i'm afraid to waste 60 dollars on one back in the good old days it did not matter what u bought because they put more work into them
I love me some Uematsu. He's Probably my favorite composer of video games. But Yasunori Mitsuda blew my mind with this soundtrack. IMHO its the best soundtrack to a game ever writen.
I love this song, it beats one winged angel anyday of the week. (Dont get me wrong I love that too, but my heart rests with the beauty of the latin vibe of this song)

Yeah, I was one who played Cross before Trigger, but after having played Cross, Trigger didn't affect as much as Cross did. They are both splendid games with superb OSTs but I thinkI just liked Cross more or.. I dont know maybe its the nostalgia factor kicking in.

@CrimsonBackStaber Ah but you have to be careful with things like that. Alot of these games have worse graphics but are better for it. Gives them an innocent and cute edge that makes the game in many ways.

I wasnt the biggest fan of it and mostly had bought the game cuz it was made by the Chrono Team but I still enjoyed the game none the less and honestly I have to say this I had to forget that it was related to Chrono Trigger (while still reminded it was throughout the game) to play it and make it better than it already was. My own opinion as well
@keeeeeg I think everyone here would agree with you. I wish they continued this series. "Supposedly" they had another Chrono on the way but Square didn't finish it as can be said about Final Fantasy 7. Although Final Fantasy did not compare to this in many ways. I think we'll all agree Square lost a lot of their respect for making games by not doing them. :(!

@francisosorio243 same goes for final fantasy its an amazing series of games the classic were the best but thts because they ddnt rely on the graphics and only on gameplay and yet they were always amazingly high in graphics for the time u culd go through each ff over and over and not get bored now they r starting to become like all the rest..... after final fantasy 10 it all went to shit in my opinion... ff13 is ok but is far from good compared to the classics....10-2 and 12 sucked complere ass

@009fan1 Yeah pretty much, well IMO ff10-2 is pretty good, only ff4 ff10 and ff13 had the success of making another one, a sequel. And ff10 is heartbraking, for me though. Still ff8 is da best! haha I bought it on my ps3 and it still kicked ass. and for ff13 yeah, far from good compared to the classics, And if you have a psp I recommend you to play the dissidia 1 and 012 the storyline is damn amazing, for me though.

This game is so epic, I have two copies, one unopened, the other in pristine condition, not a single scratch on it! I plan on playing it again soon. I normally don't play video games on my PS2 very often and scarcely long, but I've literally spent like 12 hours per day on that game, it used up my ENTIRE weekend, and my only regret is that I beat the game so fast :(

Yeah, I was one who played Cross before Trigger, but after having played Cross, Trigger didn't affect as much as Cross did. They are both splendid games with superb OSTs but I thinkI just liked Cross more or.. I dont know maybe its the nostalgia factor kicking in.

I wasnt the biggest fan of it and mostly had bought the game cuz it was made by the Chrono Team but I still enjoyed the game none the less and honestly I have to say this I had to forget that it was related to Chrono Trigger (while still reminded it was throughout the game) to play it and make it better than it already was. My own opinion as well

@keeeeeg I think everyone here would agree with you. I wish they continued this series. "Supposedly" they had another Chrono on the way but Square didn't finish it as can be said about Final Fantasy 7. Although Final Fantasy did not compare to this in many ways. I think we'll all agree Square lost a lot of their respect for making games by not doing them. :(!
