I'm always in awe of Hitchens. Interesting though that one of his condemnations of the 10th commandment is that it denounces a way of thinking or feeling and yet a number of his commandments do the same.
There will always be people twisting the word of God. If you want to interpret the Bible do it well! You can`t take anything from the Bible OUT OF CONTEXT! If you want to make an epidemiological study of words of the 10 commandments, take the Hebrew, not the translated English one! When you get your facts right, we can discuss.

The first commandment is not referring to creativity and expression of artistic talent. It's simply commanding us not to worship these things as idols. The commandment clearly state that we should not worship these man made expressions. The commandment about honor thy mother and father. This commandment points out that parents can be (maybe not this generation) wiser than us so we should obey them so we can have a long prosperous life. Commandment 6 is often misquoted. It is not, "Thou shalt not kill." It actually reads, "Thou shalt not murder." I love hitchens, but he does contradict himself here. He opposes the idea of thought crime (which I agree), but then, in his commandments, he has, "do not even think of condemning people as private property." Obviously the root of the statement is required. Slavery is a terrible thing. However, he should have left the words "even think" out.
1) Notice that Hitchens begins his critique with assertions made against Roman papalism (and those churches who follow it), not biblical Protestantism. I find he uses this tactic quite often.
2) It is true that ALL biblical Protestants should be observing the seventh-day Sabbath; as it is a part of the eternal Decalogue (not the civil, ceremonial, or clean/unclean laws).
A majority of Hitchens' arguments are against false teachings in the church; not the Bible itself.

I don't believe God has given Hitchens cancer because he's an atheist, that woud be petty and every Christian who believes that is just silly. A lot of evil people are alive and well. ...but getting back to the Ten Commandments. Where exactly does Charlton Heston say that violating the 10th commandment will result in being sent to a place of "insane pain and torture?" It so strange that Hitchens singles out the one commandment that has true relevance to our existence today (most people don't struggle with temptations to murder), and he calls it the worst one of all.
I sincerely hope and pray that this man humbles himself before he breathes his last breath. I cannot imagine spending an eternity regretting the choice to deny God even though his existance was so obvious. I will continue to pray for this man.

The first commandment is not referring to creativity and expression of artistic talent. It's simply commanding us not to worship these things as idols. The commandment clearly state that we should not worship these man made expressions. The commandment about honor thy mother and father. This commandment points out that parents can be (maybe not this generation) wiser than us so we should obey them so we can have a long prosperous life. They have more experience and can direct us a lot better

Commandment 6 is often misquoted. It is not, "Thou shalt not kill." It actually reads, "Thou shalt not murder." Many fundies interpret this as a free pass that allowed God all his smiting from a single baby to nearly every living thing on the planet. He's not murdering if he had to kill to allow something to happen or prevent something from happening. It's a subtlety that allowed the Bible to be so exciting. Smite, smite, smite.

I love hitchens, but he does contradict himself here. He opposes the idea of thought crime (which I agree), but then, in his commandments, he has, "do not even think of condemning people as private property." Obviously the root of the statement is required. Slavery is a terrible thing. However, he should have left the words "even think" out.

1) Notice that Hitchens begins his critique with assertions made against Roman papalism (and those churches who follow it), not biblical Protestantism. I find he uses this tactic quite often.
2) It is true that ALL biblical Protestants should be observing the seventh-day Sabbath; as it is a part of the eternal Decalogue (not the civil, ceremonial, or clean/unclean laws).
A majority of Hitchens' arguments are against false teachings in the church; not the Bible itself.

There is no debate amoung scientists as to whether evolution happened. modern scientific consensus is more believable to me than fairy tales from thousands of years ago

Oh Christopher, while I agree that your commandments are more moral, you did exactly what you condemned, your second commandment punishes thought crimes!
But, unlike the 'originals', I'm willing to wager you'd be much more receptive to editing your commandments if you were shown their faults.

Nowhere does Christopher threaten punishment, nor label any of the offenses crimes. Thus, your 'thought crime' allegation rings rather false. I'm sure you're also wise enough to understand that Christopher was not suggesting condemning someone for having a stray thought.

I don't believe God has given Hitchens cancer because he's an atheist, that woud be petty and every Christian who believes that is just silly. A lot of evil people are alive and well. Maybe Hitchens has developed cancer so that the power of God may be shown in him. That's what happened to a blind man in the Gospel. Maybe Hitchens will convert and repent of his work and influence many. ;P

@Jesses001 well his video is just so stupid... the one commandment that has some real relevance to our modern world is the one he calls a though crime. How often have we heard people complain about the rampant consumerism and advertising designed to make us feel inadequate and unhappy unless we keep economic pace with our neighbors? And Hitchens calls a commandment to not "covet" a thought crime commandment. I don't buy it.

Secondly, I do not see why being jelous of someone who has a neat new toy should send you to a place of insane pain and torture, or any other thought for that matter. Some hyper-consumerism hysteria is very much designed to make us feel that we must have what others have... be it a Hula Hoop or an iPad. ...but getting back to the Ten Commandments. Where exactly does Charlton Heston say that violating the 10th commandment will result in being sent to a place of "insane pain and torture?" It so strange that Hitchens singles out the one commandment that has true relevance to our existence today (most people don't struggle with temptations to murder), and he calls it the worst one of all.

I sincerely hope and pray that this man humbles himself before he breathes his last breath. I cannot imagine spending an eternity regretting the choice to deny God even though his existance was so obvious. I will continue to pray for this man.

I don't understand your concern. Hitchens does not believe in an afterlife, or that prayer has any demonstrable effect, let alone that God's existence is "obvious". Why then would he feel the need to humble himself to anything? He detests slavery, particularly the slavery of the mind. Praise his intellectual courage in the face of so much fearful superstition.

Hitchens can at times appear quite charming. He leans on his sarcastic wit to gloss over a limited command of the Bible.
His faithful minions - call them what you will - elevate him to godlike status. In light of Hitchens' inner need to re-write the Ten Commandments, he no doubt relishes the adulation. Chris, you're neither the first nor the last. Ted Turner already has HIS Ten Commandments.
As with any other leftover ham, Hitchens should be swallowed with the proverbial grain of salt.
