  • Grew up listening to this - an awesome song.

  • It is also my favorite..

  • Love this so much.....................

  • watch?v=-oypS5LS010 :D

  • @Dragutinovic75 serbian version

  • Thank heavens for games like Rabbids Go Home. Without that game I never would have been able to experience the wonderful 1950s

  • I've heard this song on radio when I was small.I like it very much! After,I heard other versions and know Harry through u-tube.I love Harry's version best! This video is great too!

  • 25 people who watched this video are deaf.....

  • Vietnamese.hehe:/watch?v=fFD03fq0l2M

  • came here because i watched carmen jones -_-

  • aguante harry belafonte que grande!!!

  • capitalismic bitches don't earn that much appreciation. they earn other things. my head is turning around :)

  • killing, why are we such bitches ? Just try to be a human, assholes. Don't you get it ?

  • thumb up if Colbert did not send u here

  • Oh will you STOP with the "thumbs up if this and this TV show told you about it". It just tells the rest of the world how pathetic you are. The current generation (teens and early 20's) is SO freakin' SAD. Everything has to be handed to them in a silver platter by Seth Macfarlane (or Colbert or whoever).

  • @samsamba08 u mad bro? I knew Harry Belafonte from something called a record, but if people are learning about him and his new book from Stephen Colbert, who am I to complain?

  • @samsamba08 What the fuck are you talking about? Stephen Colbert is nothing like Seth MacFarlane. He's a fucking saint if anything. I doubt you're past your teen years, so why don't you stop complaining and making yourself look like an idiot and actually go learn who Stephen Colbert is and what he's done. This is a good thing, you idiot. It's good that the younger generation listen to music like this.

  • @frenchpansy499Z - I'm 32 years old. I'm well aware who Stephen Colbert is, thank you very much. Douchebag. All I said is that Youtube is filled with videos of pretty much everything that's considered "classic", and the top comment is always a moron begging for "thumbs up" because they found out about it from a TV show.

  • @samsamba08 No, you said that everything needed to be handed to the current generation by a celebrity on a silver platter, while totally overlooking the good in that.

  • Did he say "The Night is Gay" ??

  • Yes, as in happy and carefree.

  • @05Night33 He did. Gay means happy or something like that

  • 24 people are tone deaf . . .

  • 1956 is the year

  • 24 people never left their hometown.

  • Nope I watched "Sing your song" on HBO... :P

  • Best..

  • @alienlivingform it was from the 1950's

  • Which year is this? Awsome song btw

  • i wonder what kinda insane people can dislike this song !!!

  • yah, which makes no sense becuase no one would be happy if they were gayy

  • Kiss the girl - Little mermaid = same tune of Jamaica Farwell

  • Colbert Bump!

  • Mr. Belafonte. Thank you for your politics. Thank you for the children. Thank you for your life. God Bless.

  • Colbert Bump

  • this is great but i always think chuck berry version is the best cos i grew up with it!

  • Mr. Belafonte a revered, enjoyed favorite of mine before any time had even passed. Instant embracing of his voice and flavor of a human being when I first heard him in 1956. Treasure, treasure. Being a part of the era that recognized the enormity and significance of his song and lovely, smart personality alongside Makeba, etc. is a wonderful to have as my personal history. So many YT sites with Belafonte have posts saying they cried seeing him on Colbert---their little duet melted my world.

  • @SpeegBJ I applaud this comment. <3

  • So graceful

  • I saw Colbert also and cried.

  • @jamesreese1 why?

  • Lovely song, lovely man. I enjoyed the Colbert Report episode, but he's been on my list of favorites since the 1950s. Check out his many clips on YouTube and maybe look for the Carnegie Hall CDs. Really great performances, including Miriam Makeba and the Chad Mitchell Trio along with the Belafonte Singers. This man has an enviable talent and has enriched our lives for many decades. God bless you, Harry!

  • Colbert and Belafonte singing in harmony was pure magic. It was just so spontaneous, and you could tell Colbert was out of character because he wasn't smiling at all, just staring straight at Belafonte. The way he did the harmonies was unbelievable.

The mere fact that two human beings can produce such beauty - completely spontaneously - gives me hope for humanity.

  • @HeardTheSound Mr. Belafonte reminded us all of how much there is to the human psyche, heart and life experience that is conveyed through intelligent, genuine and loving expression. He demonstrates it all in a wonderful many-layered manner beyond his fantastic music. I miss those ways...what has happened to people? I'm in my 60th decade; I have reason to ask. Cheers, Mr. B!

  • I heard this song on the Colbert report for the first time...their singing was so cute

  • watching the colbert report right now and i am wondering what happened to belafonte's voice...anyone knows?

  • You just made my day harry! Thank you

  • he's a pretty good lookin dood... just sayin

  • COLBERT BUMP

  • COLBERT BUMP

  • Belafonte and Colberts version sounded better to me.

  • I just watched Colbert!

  • thumbs up!

  • Thumb this up if you came here after you watched the Colbert Report.

  • @LtDDuffBeer Dude you need to get a life and probably a job also...LOOSER.

  • @LtDDuffBeer

Yep, me too. Proud owner of one of the 1.0000.0000 original 1956 Calypso records...

  • @LtDDuffBeer zzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • @LtDDuffBeer yes i came here after seeing colbert report

  • @LtDDuffBeer

    wtf is that ?

  • @LtDDuffBeer I knew all about Harry Belafonte many years ago!

  • I'd never hear of this man until I watched Colbert tonight. I looked him up as soon as I watched the show because I loved the message and it was pretty cool when stephen got him to sing, though reluctant.

  • COLBERT

  • Dear prgarbs and the rest:

I just saw Colbert....with Belafonte. Gorgeous, just gorgeous humanity. I teared up when Harry sang and Stephen sang; just exquisite and genuine. I saw this TV show when it was aired about 1957? (the one here on YT). I was 6 years old when the tune came out in '56. Everyone in my small town embraced it. I lived in a conservative, all white, Midwestern Indiana village really. The immediate kind, true and enlightenment we felt then resonated on Colbert tonight.

  • @SpeegBJ I'm watching the documentary about him... Sing Your Song. By the way, your story is very refreshing.

  • He had fame, wealth, women. Yet, he cared about the human condition and tried to help out. 84 years old now, a true American hero. We need more like him. Did anyone notice on Colbert the main, number one energy he was emitting? I did. KINDNESS. A close second display was HUMILITY. Thank you.

  • I just saw Harry Belafonte on "Colbert" and the two of them sang a couple bars of this song. I can see the appeal he had during his career now. On the show he sounded well spoken and intelligent and looked very well for a man who must be 84 now!

  • colbert brought me here

  • @MrAndycouto same as me.

  • @MrAndycouto me too.

  • @miminights123 AGREE!!

  • the nights are gay? this dont sound ok at 2011

  • Is he jamaican? Anyways i love love love this song and im from hong kong xd

  • I Don't Know if anyone else had Noticed, but over the Years Harry Never Seem to age. ??

Dam Good Singer, & how Times have Changed from then, but NOT for The better.

  • If I was Justin Bieber I would honestly hate my life due to the fact that I would be mentioned on every single Youtube comment... common people Leave the Kid alone

Grow up & just move on from his music -___-

LEts Like not mention him anymore .....

  • this is the song that came to mind when leave would end because of how he regrets having to leave

  • Harry Belafonte = Mohombi (Hairstyle,Fashion)

  • harry belafonte was sexy and gorgeous during his prime... and a great singer! this song was famous all over the world. when i was a kid, i was always humming it.

  • i sang this in grade 2 or 3..at that age it made me sad because i couldn't understand how he had to leave a little girl in kingstontown...that poor girl wouldn't have her daddy, lol. i still love it, and now i'm 40! voice is like butter

  • Nights are *gay*

  • Amazing to see the original version of Jamaican Farewell! Harry looks so young and endearing!

  • darko rundek - otok

  • The first of my introduction to Harry Belafonte. Don't mix the politics with the music. What a great voice, what greater music!

  • @kitchenrobert55 Get Bent

  • @kitchenrobert55 you are simply igonrant...

  • @kitchenrobert55 Unequivocally a great man, pan-humanitarian. Had you been born into a time, place and race where your only economic option was to stack bananas for foreign corporations all night long, would you have been able to ascend to global fame and fortune by any talent of yours? Clearly not. Unlike Mr. Belafonte, you are an infra man.

  • How the fuck can u NOT like this?

  • kd a legenda da música quero ver a letra, pls ja que avisa que tem CC

  • I remember when my class played this song on steel drums in 5th grade :D (it was for a spring concert)

  • @714energy Can't blame him. Can you?

  • @714energy why do you say that?

  • da people who press the dislike button r real lunatics n deaf people

  • HARRY BELAFONTE has stayed true to his roots over the years. I admire him a lot! I guess that makes me a, "race traitor" since I am white - oh well.

  • ge outlived my grandpa as his best listener.... :D

  • i cry every time i hear this song. despite that, i play it whenever im sad and i feel better. such a beautiful piece.

  • I'm playing this song for my friend's birthday on the piano. Should I play any other songs?

  • HARRY BELAFONTE Took his people to the hearts of ordinary people like my mother who died some years back, and we now love their followers.

  • @zonkozonko Who our the ordinary people? The statement you made sounds racist.

  • @ShabazzAllah1 Sorry but you are far wrong my wife is African of the Luo tribe, so I have extended family in Africa who offer me a warm wellcome.

  • @zonkozonko What the hell our you talking about? I didn't say anything about your wife or Africa. I want to know what do you mean about ordinary people? "You said he took his people to the hearts of ordinary people".

  • @ShabazzAllah1 Ordinary people who worked in Mills and down mines and until my generation did not have the opportunity to travel and meet people of other races. Harry Belafonte did come to UK and was liked by many, as well as USA. I do not want to argue with you its not my way.

  • Ahh I must say I love this song!!!(=

My choir gets to sing this song(=

But of course, we had to change the word "Gay" to "Warm." Sadness :/

  • I'm gonna play this song on my steel drum for this thing called Orama if y'all ever hear of it ( probably not though) anywho...

  • Love it. How did anyone give it a thumbs down?!

  • Now i really want to go to jamaica, at night!

  • @fr0ggyat7 What?

Well that. like, your opinion, man!

  • @FuscoIndustries what i mean is, he says "down the way, where he nights are gay." notice the word *gay*

  • @fr0ggyat7 gay means happy not in your derogatory meaning douche bag!!!

  • I love love love love this man and his voice, so beautiful, every single song. Thank you for sharing.

  • Potential Grows: I mean that Belafonte was/is pure class!

  • ackee, saltfish and rice is nice indeed..sad to say i'm on my way..had to leave a little girl in kingston town..sad to say..won't be back for many a day..

  • What year is this???

  • Het, thanks for posting this song, I was wondering where it had gone.

  • Sweet and lovely. Beautiful man.

  • I am a Nets fan, not a jay Z fan. However, if the Nets become a good team in the coming years, and I think they will, Jay Z will be pretty big 40 years from now.

  • my choir teacher is doing this song with us and we get 2 use crazy instruments great song

  • I love this song!! My music teacher just introduced me to this today and we are playing it for our recital!! :D -Kristina
