He killed Shorty Shea; he was given the death penalty for that too. He also shot a drug dealer that one of the family had ripped off. On the second night of the murders at the LaBianca's, Charlie broke in and tied up Leno and Rosemary. He then went to the car and instructed his accomplices to carry out the murders. So he's very much just as responsible. The murders were done FOR Charlie by these people.

Manson and the others were given the death penalty but their sentences were commuted down to "life" in 1972. As of this moment they are still alive. Steve "Clem" Grogan who helped kill Donald "Shorty" Shea was granted parole around 1986 or so.

Finally some intelligent conversation re the Manson thing. You can accept that there are societal problems that "contribute" to murder, without absovling the murderer. In truth, it's a combination of factors, "nature and nurture" as they say in sociology. It's part upbrining and experiences, but also part personal resonsibility. Manson absolutely REFUSES to take ANY personal responsibility, so it's very hard to consider his grievances.
