Wow what an Honor for them to be given a song from Michael Jackson. MJ's version is a one take demo, if he wanted he could have owned this song YMO fans don't be nieve. Clapton is a great great artist in his own way. But Michael Jackson, they could have outdone Michael Jackson, lets just be realistic please.
Michael's version wins HANDS DOWN..sorry Greg Phillinganes and Eric Clapton..you are NOT in the running for best version of "Behind the Mask". That is all.
Man, you people can be stupid. Once and for all...
This song was written by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Chris Mosdell and originally performed by YMO.
In the mid 80s, Michael Jackson was responsible for additional (godawful) English lyrics. This version was first recorded by Greg Phillinganes on a solo album of his, then a year later, Clapton covered the Jackson/Phillinganes version.
These facts are easily available for anybody with brains and the willingness to find them. You're welcome.
@cap65 Yeah MJ's "godawful" lyrics thats why every friggin artist that has covered it since has used those same "godawful" lyrics. stop kidding urself
@ItsABeautifulMorning - "Kidding myself" about what, exactly? The reason they would have used those is because obviously this version is better known to more people at this point in time than the original was. That doesn't mean they're "better" lyrics. If you like them, then good for you. I happen to think they're godawful, so I said so. In any case, that wasn't my main point anyway. What I was pointing out was the idiocy of people here making claims about something they know nothing about.
An amazing song by one of the greatest bands of all time!!! We are really inspired by these guys, and would love your opinion on our material, any feedback would be greatly appreciated, keep on rocking man!!
Mark King does play with his bass kind of high....when you play a bass in the sitting position it will still be up high like that too, especially with a large bodied bass lik the JD or a MK Alembic. So from a technical and comfort viewpoint I see nothing wrong with the way he carries his bass. You can't argue with his skill. I play up kind of high too. So does Billy Shehan.
@xiaofeilong 80ies were the only era in music were cover versions were actually better than the original (something which never worked again after the end of the 80ies - you can't make a better version of ANY 80ies - song while not being in the 80ies ;-)). Great track (in all versions BUT the original from '79)!
It's sooooo cool to love the original song/movie etc more than the remake. "oh I new this song years before blah blah blah. Yawn. This is the best version.
Micheal Jackson did not write this song. Where the heck did that "fact" come from?
Lyric: Chris Mosdell (British Poet and Songwriter)
Music: Ryuichi Sakamoto (Japanese Musician most famous for the Yellow Magic Orchestra and his solo work including the score for "Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence")
Actually he is right. According to several lyric websites, it was written by Chris Mosdell, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Michael Jackson. I think it was supposed to originally be on Jackson's "Bad" album but was give n to Clapton instead.
RE: Micheal Jackson did not write this song. Where the heck did that "fact" come from?
Michael in fact did co-write this song. I was recorded by a musician that had been on the recording sessions for both Off The Wall and Thriller named Greg Philinganes. Search this song title with Greg's name on You Tube and the video will pop up. It was released on Greg's solo album in 1985. This Clapton/ Collins version came much later.
the backing singers are class ,them guys back paul young for years and all so did very well solo remember the band london beat and the song i've been thinking about you ,well this is them .
Any solo is simply an improvisation on a song's original theme/melody. That is how all music publishers, copyright royalty collection societies, the musician's unions and the law regard it.
That said, in some countries a session musician can (but not the band/artist themselves, so Clapton would not qualify) claim a small percentage of any artist's (but not the composer's) fee when a track they play on is played on the radio, tv or where ever.
Can not get into the YMO? I own 5 LPs, 2 CDs, 2 7" singles plus another album on MP3 (I own only 2 Clapton LPs). Think you misenterpritated my comment :-)
The point I was making was that all these people who go on about EC being a "real musician" should actualy listen to the records. "August", the LP this is from, is a very 80's and synthetic record, and that is in no small way due to Phil Collin's variable production skills.
Well, I'll admit if you own that much YMO you must like them... so excuse my judgement on that one... Now, insofar as EC bring a real musician, etc and Collins, I'm not sure why anyone would call them more real musicians then YMO - Hosono, Sakamoto and Takahashi are quite accomplished musicians and YMO is only their most famous project. And yes, "August" is a very synth laden 80's record. Very much a product of its time. Whereas a lot of YMO's music still sounds pretty fresh IMO
Co-written by MJ.... RIP.

Rmelcher77, "no one cares about the laws of music"? WTF?
I was just making the point that this is 100% cover version. End of story.
--- Clapton took a horrible song and made it so not only robots can listen to it ---
Rmelcher77, have you ever heard Clapton's original recording of this song? It's a 80's Phil Collins production, and as such pretty dated.
But I guess at least Collins and Clapton play proper instruments, not synths and drum machines. Just a minute... LOL
