at 0:40 a plane takes leaves the coast of south africa and flies into the middle of the pacific then turns around at 0:56 and heads back to South Africa. What the fuck could've happened on that plane to make it turn around?!?!?
A 24 hour observation of all of the large aircraft flights in the world, recorded by plane flight transponders, via Geo-stationary orbital satellite.
You will see the aircraft flow of traffic leaving the North American continent and travelling at night to arrive in the UK in the morning. Then you will see the flow changing, leaving the UK in the morning and flying to the American continent in daylight...
I was shown this video today in class- ( GPS as one of the form of data acquisition in GIS). I found it beyond fascinating, specially after learning a bit about what it took to get it done. This is a clear picture of the state of the world's economy.
@ed22781 I actually thought about showing this video in some class. I am a researcher doing PhD and sometimes give some special lectures to students. a detail : this map is made from airport's flight control data and/or airlines flights shedule. So i believe it only includes airliners flying IFR on sheduled flights. Excluding all military flights, private planes, flight schools, business aircrafts, and so on !
You would not believe your eyes If ten million fireflies Lit up the world as I fell asleep 'Cause they'd fill the open air And leave teardrops everywhere You'd think me rude But I would just stand and stare I'd like to make myself believe That planet Earth turns slowly It's hard to say that I'd rather stay Awake when I'm asleep 'Cause everything is never as it seems

It's, of course, completely logical, because European countries are nothing like USA, they are more like the states. The whole Europe is just about as big as U.S.
U.S total area, according to Wikipedia: 9,826,630 km2
Europe total area, according to Wikipedia: 10,180,000 km2
As you can see, it would have been pretty accurate to say that the U.S. are almost the size of Europe, but "two times the size of Europe"? Definitely not.
@deafdani it's confusion : european union and europe. Geographic europe (without greenland) is about the size of the US (with alaska). but the European Union (27 nations) is about half the size of the US
@Sebbastar Well theres that conclusion, or the one where you take into account the millions traveling to and from Europe to America every day. Look at Europe during the day. Are they lazy too?
That's exactly what I was thinking, between all the cars in the world, coal burning, and planes, I guess we really do burn a staggering amount of fuels as a species. I mean, we all know this, but to see a portion of it demonstrated is flat out jaw dropping.

do we really think we'll last very long with 93000 planes flying every 24 hours!
we'd better find a good way of flying clean or injecting huge doses of oxygen in the air, b4 acidity of the sea kills all life in it, and by consequences, ends the absorption of carbon dioxide that man kind shits every where; good day!
dude if they showed factory activity over 24 hours there would not be a part of the land on this map that wasn't yellow, not even mentioning cars and motor vehicles. airplanes are cleaner than almost anything out there, so you can watch this video in peace
and there's the huge problem that humans put out an entire 4% of the co2 entering the atmosphere! we're TOTALLY going to screw the planet over with our MASSIVE production of co2.
Actually only about 2-3% by some counts, still more than enough additionally to tip relatively sensitive scales over a long period of time (say, a few hundred years).
There is a "g" in the word "whinge", though. Look, there it is, between the "n" and the "e". Do you see it, there? Now, go away, and do some cursory research into dialects. Separated by a common language, eh?
