Why did it take so long Honda? This is what you can do and deny us for so long - shame on you ;-) That sound..... I would love to be the driver in that car.
@000CLos Thats precisely it, much of the sound is the engine but many don't realise its the vortex/whirlwind effect of the engine sucking in the air at such a rate and the noise is created like that
@101DamnAsians Hell yea! Nothing like this has ever come out before. Every Honda owner should be damn proud. It sounds amazing and looks so damn sleek.
Many people say it is 3.4L v8 500hp. I understand Super GT 500 regulation is 500 hp max. But this engine seems to rev all the way to near F1 level of 18000rpm. The engine sound certainly does not pitch as high as 18000rpm, but it sounds much more than 10300rpm to me. (I race in a k20a capable of 10000rpm)
AND it sounds like a PURE race engine that is designed to last 2 races only. The sound beats GT-R in Super GT 500 series. Yet we will have to see how well it fare in the races to come.
Yeah the sound you HEAR is from the exhaust. Honda said that they had other exhausts that would allow the engine to output more power but this exhaust gave the HONDA SOUND. Honda said themselves the SUPER GT HR10EG engine will redline at 10300rpm. Remember I said this engine is DETUNED. It's a Formula Nippon engine which is like the japanese F1. They detuned it and lowered the rev to improve reliability. A super gt engine must last for 4 consecutive races before a team is allowed to changeengine
well then damn! the sound near 10300rpm sounded that way??? It is a damn good sound! In comparison other GT500 cars (Nissan, Lexus, etc), although still amazing, sounded like mildly tuned cars.
Do you know how many laps these Super GT car go per race? 4 races to change an engine seems long, but I would like to know the distance they push per race.
@golferchin76 Depends on the course, they measure in mileage. The first 2 races of 2010 seasons are 300KM on each course so 4 races x 300KM is at least 1200KM and lets not forget the practice sessions, and qualifying.
That is simply amazing. at that kind of power plus severe abuse. Constant upshift full throttle. Upshifts, downshift & heavy brakes. and still last 1200km+practice+qualification. My race tuned D15B 170+ crank PS I hope it will last this yrs race schedule. I blew one already during practice before the season. Piston rod broke & pierced through the engine body. In a year I do roughly 1000km racing+practicing+qualification. Though practice is approx 60% of the mileage.
Honda engines since 90's has always been incredible and easy to tune, lots of aftermarket parts, ha. But only the JDM one, seems like they like to keep good things to themselves. A D15B Thai version outputs at 80 some hp, the JDM is rated at 130hp. Over here there's a big chop shop market where you can see all the used Japan parts, engines, etc. We normally start with an engine swap then go from there. But at the end very close gear ratio and a big final drive helps a lot at our short circuit.
hi c312eal used to have this 1.6L class when teams would drop B16Bs into EG or EK hatch chassis. (not B16A) But that category was deleted a few years ago seeing that compact production cars here are usually 1.5L engines. Nevertheless, on road there are all kinds of civics with B16B, B18C in them. But here is not the same as North America, Honda car owners rarely force feed their engines. The turbo crowds go for RB20 or 26 twinturbo, 1JZ or 2JZ-GTE, especially the pick-up low riders.
often time one can get surprised when someone opens up the hood of his/her old chassis (like 15-20yrs old) and realized that it's got a 500+hp tuned engine inside. Every car is expensive here in relation to your country's except compact pick ups. So you see a lot of pick ups with really crazy engine swap.
Now the K20A. For the 2000cc class usually it was B18c bored to 2.0L. Now we start to see type R civic chassis, with K20A application, but it is still nil on the race circuit because
to use K20A means one needs to build up a totally new race chassis based on DC5 or FD1 or 2. It can get really expensive at the end. I've seen 2-4 race prepped DC5 with 300hp NA crank output, and that's it. I have not yet seen a FD2/K20A, but it is coming soon because retired Japanese Type R one make race cars are coming to Thailand, not road legal, can't get registered, but make great race machines!
On road, genuine FD2s are very rate. I normally see FD1 fully shod with FD2 parts from Japan.
