"New Coke" was better. In fact, I'll go so far as to say it was the best dark cola ever made. The whole new Coke thing was just a scam by Coca Cola to get people to buy more when they reintroduced the old formula again. It was a plot from the beginning. They never intended to leave new Coke out permanently.

New Coke tasted pretty much like Diet Coke tastes now (they came out at the same time and thus the one tasted like the diet version of the other).
It was slightly sweeter and had less of the orange-ginger-vanilla essences of Coke Classic (as Old Coke was called when it was re-introduced). New Coke was not quite like Pepsi, with its lemon-lime overtones, so they could still say Coke was different from Pepsi.

i remember new coke. I hated it. As a matter of fact; new coke verey nearly bankrupted the coke company. Everyone boycotted it, and started drinking pepsi. So they brought back the original taste. They labelled it coke classic. It goes to show ya you can't improve on perfection. Why mess with a good thing?

This was one of the most successful fake-outs in history. Coke never had any intention of permanantly taking the original off the market. At the time, Pepsi had been gaining and Coke needed a gimmick to take back the offensive. It worked beautifully; all anyone talked about for a year was Coke.
