Nixon does a good job here of diverting the fact based conversation up to that point and introducing a more humane emotional side to the story. In the process he is clearly blaming H and E for everything, exonerating himself but passing it off as an emotionally sad time for him personally having to fire them. Its a clear attempt to divert Frost and the viewer from his own Guilt.
The actor protraying Nixon did not do a very good job with the voice and several mannerisms and inflections of the voice. I was not convinced with his portrayal to be blunt. That is why I sought out the interviews online and see the REAL thing.
@inhisgrace007 Ya, I agree. In the movie "Nixon" from 1995, The actor in that one (Anthony Hopkins) did a better job than the Frost/Nixon movie. Having said that, Nixon would probably be a very hard person to portray. After all, the devil wears many masks. :)
@inhisgrace007 It was a dramatization. Honestly, if it was exactly like the interviews, what would the point be? We could just come and watch these instead.
@inhisgrace007 I'm surprised someone would think Langella didn't do a good job in Frost/NIxon, I personally thought it was an Oscar performance without a doubt. He has a very characteristic voice which he may be unable to change, but there was so much depth to his portrayal that i think it's completely irrelevant that he looks so different or didn't manage to exactly mirror his mannerism (of which not much is seen in this interview anyway)
It's indeed fascinating how Nixon, at the start of this scandal in 1972 so quickly stood by and defended his friends and peers and sadly, sadly, it took him two years to realize it's "in the best interest of America" to resign.
Nixon made the vietnam war go on because he knew that people would not want to change presidents in wartime, and used thousands more deaths to his advantage. He was a slimy scumbag and a master arm twister. There's a reason people called him "Tricky Dick" And watergate was completely dirty, though everyone knows that. He had to go at the end, though he did make steps to ending the cold war though presidents like Kennedy made much greater strides. He was mixed, but mostly, he was deep in crime.
@Stube437 ..Do you really not know your history? People were frustrated with the democrats because the war blew up in Johnsons face and destroyed his presidency. You should know that it has been shown throughout U.S History that it usually ends up being one party for eight years and then the other for eight years. People wanted a change. I am a liberal but i cannot deny this fact.
@Stube437 , People were tired of the Democratic party at that time because Johnson had walked away defeated though in my opinion he was a great president. Nixon saw his chance then in 68 to run, and you should know that with our country it is often the case that the parties trade the white house you could say every 8 years. Very unusual when a party is in power for more than eight years straight.
cant believe some of the comments on here, he was a very dodgy guy, he did not do this to be honest or for some greater good, he did it to try and salvage his political career and for the money. also what did he actually admit to, i think hes lying from start to finish. quality interview though even if just for entertainment value.
MOre proof that liberals are garbage and always will be garbage. Stealing from those that have to give it to degenerates, and then using any info to bring down a good man. I hate liberals...they are the enemy of the USA...they are the god damn communists.
Mr. Nixon you're a damn good lawyer, they're making you a villain as if you were defending murder. Anyone who can defend himself as eloquently as you is a credit to America and a MUCH better speaker for the country than Bush or Palin could ever hope to be.
Tormented soul. Caught up in the web and angry for how life had turned out for him. Still, for all the bullshit he caused, he never spent a day in jail, so it didn't turn out all that bad for Nixon.
@sackit1967 Nixon made peace with Russia (nobody could before), with China (nobody could before), and even got us out of Vietnam! His oversees policy was damn conservative and did more good in 6 years than any 2 presidents could do in 16. His domestic policy a bit liberal, but hey, I give him a pass on that. He visited Xenia after the tornado! This was a good president, and didnt know about watergate until it happened and then tried to protect his friends. You libs are crap for pursuing this.
@calimar28 You NeoCons can cherry pick what you will from Tricky Dicks dicey history. . . .made peace with Russia?? Made Peace with China?? Dude . . . .there was no peace to be made . . . we were not at war with either country. . . .sure he went on trips to both countries (he was credited with having a wonderful foreign policy knack), but he was a paranoid control freak who let the control slip away when the watergate break in took place. Liberals are garbage because why calimar?
@calimar28 he got you out of vietnam after killing or being responsible for killing one million people. peace with Russia and China, USA was not at war with Russia or China. How can you watch him sitting there lying and call him a good president. He did not know about Watergate, dont be a muppet.

@chaosrex1487 People changed President during wartime when Nixon got in.

@Stube437 What cave have you been living in? Johnson chose not to run in 1968 for reasons you should already know, end of story.
chaosrex1487 8 months ago
@chaosrex1487 oh yeah. I forgot about that. I still don't think it'd be a factor in how people chose to vote.

I know you all will probably say I've fallen for his manipulative tactics, but I genuinely felt sympathy for him.
