The really sad thing is, most of the Western world missed its opportunity to eliminate its dependence on oil. If, during the OPEC embargo, the USA had responded by aggressively pursuing research & development of alternative fuel sources, particularly for motor fuels, the OPEC nations wouldn't have the rest of us over a barrel. And there'd have been no need for us to get involved in the Gulf War or anything else there. Boy, did we ever screw up in the 1970s!
