  • Thank you for this opportunity to enjoy a beautiful melody from the late 1950s. What often passes for music today leaves a lot to be desired. We should try to change an industry that panders to the worst side of human nature.

  • Who was who??? Which one is skip batton and gary s patton help me please?

  • It's weird listening to the Marvin & Johnny version and then hearing Skip & Flip's take on it. This version sounds much cleaner...almost too clean.

  • @jvondd The reason why this one sound more "cleaner" is because white people back in that time had the money and resources to get the best equipment where as African Americans all over time have been trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cents and got what ever recording equipment they could get that meets their budget....

  • @tallthingy923 That's not what I mean. To me, cherry pie is sexually suggestive, and in the older version by Marvin & Johnny, you can catch that little dirty hint through the way they sing it. With Flip & Skip, it doesn't feel so sexy anymore. That's what I mean when I say it sounds cleaner.

  • George Carlins version is better.

  • i love the intro to this i wish it was longer

  • The mono version actually sounds better. The way they panned the instruments makes it sound off balance. Due to most early tape machines have very few channels to work with, instead of recording the band in stereo they would record 2 or 3 tracks in mono and overdub the rest and pan either left or right. This would give it that ping pong effect or have a "hole in the middle"

  • This was overproduced. I can't get behind it.

  • The Skip and Flip version is the best!!

  • Thie piece is one of my top-five all-time favorites!

  • know this from daddy cool! i knew it was cover!!!!!!!!!

  • good song to f*ck to, always has been n always will be...

  • I REMEMBER THIS SONG WHEN I WAS A TEEN IN THE 60S.......IT ALWAYS MADE ME HUNGRY

  • and to add to my comment, same thing for any group, or single person, but like i said its all bout whos better, and compition, so im not hating, just a statement., back in the 1950's or 60's, and so on. im sorry if i offended anyone.

  • even though they had great artist back then, but the truth is.... when a black group or single man does a music, orginality. there's always got to be a white group or single man who has to copy. even though is still goes around with remakes this days. all im saying is that its was compition back then. its like elvis, he will sing a song, a white group or a sinle man has to be better. its not races its verse each other, its true.

  • What do yo think of George Carlin's verson? Pretty darn good huh? I didn't relize he had such a great voice.!!

  • Very good song Im only 30 years old and I really like this song and the song called "It was I " Thank you for uploading this better music than todays that is for sure

  • Skip Battin-Byrds and New Riders Of The Purple Sage.Who woulda thunk it?

  • I am so glad I was able to find this song. I grew up to this song and never forgot it. Thank you for having it, and posting it.

  • Hey JBlack, you have enough brains to type dirty words, insults, and racial slurs, but not enough brains to know that you're a real low-life moron.

  • to bad i didnt get to know u more but i have to go im gonna drink the painful memory's away and im gonna do something thats gonna land me in prison 4 along time so this is me saying good bye for a long time...see u in the next life..4 ever and always yours Marcus...

  • I loved this song, Walt

  • Not the original but I like the sweeter version of Skip and Flip more than Marvin & Johnny. Great song and no one mentions the naughty lyrics or how the censors didn't do anything .. well I don't know what they did or didn't. But I know this song has a Flip side and meaning 'cause my thumb is not dumb numb from the crumbs.

  • Brings me George Carlin to memory. ♥

  • i love this song :)

  • YES! SKIP(CLYD BATTIN) FLIP(GARY S. PAXTON). THE ROCKABILLIES, THE PLEDGES AND GARY & CLYDE. GARY ALSO WAS WITH THE HOLLYWOOD ARGYLES(ALLEY-OOP).

  • wow, this totally sounds like a 50's song

  • Gary S. Paxton of Skip& Flip also sang Alley Opp by the Hollywood Argyles. He wrote the song and needed a name for the group so he named them after the street corner of Hollywood & Argyle...

  • @robcas123 Just some gen info: Ship who is also Gary S. Paxton got the ok from Marvin & Johnny to record this song because black music at that time was very difficult to record. R&R was tough but black singer had it even harder. So Marvin & Johnny did give the ok for Skip & Flip to do it. Skip & Flip by the way were also named after 2 dogs.

  • Sad to hear of Skip's passing...thanks for the memories..R.I.P.

  • "I guess I'm not as great as he..."

Love your channel! Nice oldies, MissBeatles88!

  • I think I like the original better, but I remember this version as a kid. Good memories!

  • wack

  • @robcas123 What's wrong with singing a cover of a great song?

  • Comment removed

  • This video was uploaded for people who enjoy this version. I am not in anyway saying this version is better than the original, I think they are both great oldies! Please no name calling here! :)

  • You tell them girl

  • @MissBeatles88

Who sang the original? I thought it was Skip and Flip.

  • @MissBeatles88

    FUCK YOU

  • The Marvin & Johnny version is WAY better.

  • What a great song !

  • What a great song..I always loved it!!!!!

  • george carlins version is better.

  • Wow. Back in about 1961, when I was 4 years old, I remember having my big sister Carol Sue play this song for me over and over again. Now, having bought myself over 100 45s, 500 albums, 600 CDs and with a digital collection of about 10,000 songs, I still consider this the beginning of my love of music. Thanks for posting Skip and Flip.

  • @pr5pro Hey I remember you. Back in 1961 when I was about to turn 15 I knew your sister Carol Sue...hahahahaha just a very little joke. If you would like another 100 45 rpm's (all original)) let me know. I've had them since they were new songs.

    cya

  • when i hear this song. i think of the late great wolfman jack. up in -WHEAV- spinning those oldies. waiting for all of those to come.

  • Their songs: "It Was I" peaked at #11 in 1959, and "Cherry Pie" peaked at #11 in 1959.

Clyde 'SKIP' Battin went on to become part of the Byrds in 1964. He performed as part of the group doing songs: "Mr. Tambourine Man"; "Turn! Turn! Turn!"; "Eight Miles High"

Gary S. Paxton "FLIP' was a writer, producer, label owner, and audio engineer. He went on to do country gospel music.

  • @rhh1945 Skip actually became a member of the Byrds in 1969 after all of the original members, except for Roger McGuinn, had departed. Skip was a great bass player and contributed several songs as a member of the latter day Byrds. He passed away a few years ago from Altzheimers. He is sadly missed, but at least we still have his recordings. I met Skip in the 1980's following a concert and found him to be a very kind and soft spoken individual.

  • skip was born in my home town.

  • woo i never knew that, did you know that the champs, song .tequila, in the back ground is -seals & crofts. playing those trumpets, before they were seals and crofts.

  • skip and flip ? marvin and johnny?.......they're both good. no need to rip skip and flip because it's a cover. marvin and johnny was was more soulful and down and dirty, but skip and flip is good in a different way.

  • The sound is just amazing, I will always wonder why no one is making music like this today.

  • Me too. I truly wish they still made stuff like this!

  • Never heard a black group did this song???

  • Do you have the original version which was done by a black group?

  • Marvin and Johnny sang it, it sounds a little heavier.

  • What year was this song done??

  • I think that was 1959 or 1960

  • Skip and Flip were from California.Gary Paxton was Flip.He was in the Hollywood Argyles and later formed Gar-Pax Records(Monster Mash).

  • please please more song of the this group in spesial it was i

  • You just brought me back to a dance in the late fifties where I met Skip and Flip. Thanks a lot for the memory. : )

  • You're most welcome :)

  • bought this record when first released. thought the version was pretty good for a cover of great song done by Marv and Johnny.

  • I could listen to this sound 24/7---such a sweet sound!!! W

  • Skip was the late Clyde "Skip" Battin from Worthington OH. He later played bass and vocals for The Byrds and new Riders of the Purple Sage among other gigs.

  • The FCC must have been in a deep sleep while this was playing. For that matter, at what are they staring so intently?

  • They were from England and one of their school mates produced this song for Skip and Flip.

  • I prefer Carlin's cover.

  • Please post the song IT WAS I if possible please, please, please

  • Wow this is a golden hit haven't heard this in the radio in generations...sweet song..if you have the IT WAS I by the same duo please post it....thanks

  • I will! Sorry to get back to you so late....I wish post it for you :)

  • I would not be watching this either if Carlin had not done it :D

I think his version is better.

  • This blows....

  • I love the Marvin and Johnny Cover it's Great,

But, I always loved this one as much, the Sutelty of this song I loved, I heard this back in Long Island sitting on the Porch, Thinking of A Gal I had a really Big Crush on. But, They're both Great! Thanks alot!

  • I think you have it backwards, Marvin and Johnny are the originals.

  • I love the Marvin and Johnny Cover it's Great,

But, I always loved this one as much, the Sublty of this song I loved, I heard this back in Long Island sitting on the Porch, Thinking of A Gal I had a really Big Crush on. But, They're both Great! Thanks alot

I'm well aware of that, Marvin & Johnny , Did the original, That was in 1954, I have both copies on 45,

    Learn How To Read!

  • Doing the stroll at the sock hops in middle school. Great times.

  • this version is cool 'cuz of that reverb on the verses, but...

the version by Marvin & Johnny

is soooo much better and funnier!!

  • well the original is by Marvin and Johnny

  • dude look up George Carlin on Arsenio Hall show part 2. He does this song I just litterally watched it. Carlin does it so GREAT!

  • Lol I watched that yesterday thats why I'm here

  • My mother just mentioned that she is one of the backup singers in this song - her "claim to fame" haha. Fun to hear.

  • Skip Battin (pictured at left) went on to become a later member of The Byrds. He was a talented bassist and singer. He was also a member of New Riders of the Purple Sage and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Unfortunately Skip passed away a few years back from Alzheimer's at the age of 69.

  • And "Flip" is Gary F. Paxton, who later recorded as the Hollywood Argyles (Alley-Oop) and later yet became involved in Christian music under his own name.

  • Hi, Thanks a million for posting this oldie. I have the 45 but don't have a player. With YOU TUBE I guess I will never need one. Every oldie I have ever looked for I have found....Thanks again JULIAN

  • Title is "George Carlin - Interview on Arsenio Pt.2 - 1989"

    /watch?v=3DAop51Kllc

  • George Carlin actually performed a pretty good cover of Cherry Pie on the Arsenio Hall Show in 1989. It's on youtube.

  • This was a parody group and parody song! just like the knockouts who sang darling lorraine or leader of the laundromat by the detergents

  • awful Marvin and Johnny version much better.

  • are you insane...........skip and flip outsold marvin and johnny's version by miles. usually i pic black artists versions over whites.........but not this one!

  • Quantity does not always equal quality. They sound just as corny as Pat Boone covering Fats Domino or Little Richard. No soul at all. A pepsodent commercial.

  • When this song came out many radio stations refused to play this "nasty" tune. I believe that it made it to #20 on the Billboard chart. That was a long time ago, just listen to the lyrics of today's tunes.

  • i want your love 24/7 amer..this song drives me nuts

  • Thank God someone posted these great oldies or I would have shot myself. And,sadly,I'm not kidding.

  • glad to have you in the land of the living. you have something to give .these oldies have saved me many times. love them love you. hang in there
