Sweden had an even smaller military then finland did, and still we sent much of our military equipment to Finland, those 12 gloster gladiators were 1/3 of all the figher planes Sweden had at the time.
Norwegian resistance fighters were also armed by Sweden, and trained here in "police training camps" close to the norwegian border.
During WW 1 many young finnish men secretly went to Germany and joined the german army to fight Russia, and to gain experience so they could one day free Finland from Russian rule. These men had a major part in building the finnish army after Finland gained it's independence in 1917, so yeah, there certainly was a german influence in the uniforms. These days we have different uniforms, though.
During the Winter War of 1939-40, no. In fact, the germans were helping the Soviet Union's war against Finland by stopping weapons from Italy etc. reaching Finland. Between 1941-44, yes, Finland and Germany were on the same side, but in 1944, Finland cut it's losses, made peace with Soviet Union and started a war against Germany. That's politics for you.

It was the coward politicians afraid of the big bad Russian bear who did very little. There were about 10,000 Swedish volunteers on Karelian Näset, and the King's son wanted to go, but his father said no.
Actually one swedish general had this plan to take over the swedish military and help if soviets attacked finland. But the goverment found out and the plan was undone. But the fact is that u people led a nice life while finns were suffering and dying. Nice "safety zone" between u and CCCP...

Yeah, it must have been quite something. It started as a fake war, where fins pretended to attack and germans pulled back without casualties, but when russians found out about it, fins had to start real campaign against germans and it all got pretty ugly. It should also be mentioned that peace treaty with russians deminished our army to bearly functional level and most of the fins fighting in lapland were raw conscripts, hence the nickname of the campaign - "crusade of the children".
I have seen many documents from the Chechenyan war and can just say that my symphaties is on the chechens.

I can tell you this. Lend-lease to soviet union started in June 1941 when Germany started Barbarossa.
And as we all know Finland fought with germany 1941-1944.

Finland did pay an expansive price in casualities during the Winter War & the Continuation War, not to mention the Civil War earlier.
Germany too did severe damage to Finland during the Lapland War.
I think finnish people did fight enough to become a nation, they now have their destiny under control, this is a great heritage.

NikoBellic1, 1) You had 'bad commanding' because Stalin purged the army of all staff officers in the 30's, plus the only soldiers the Red Army could muster where Ukrainian and Belarussian peasants, who didnt have the will to fight, and went up against the well defended mannerheim line and got slaughtered...
2) Russia will never come near to trying to conquer Finland again, they were beaten in 1939-40, and in 44' both occasions suffering huge losses....

Actually the mannerheim line wasnt very strong, the soviets exaggerated its strenght and used it as an excuse for their troops slow progress.
it was the strenght and determination of the finnish defenders who stopped the soviets, not the mannerheim line

Finland also got airplanes from sweden:
3 J6 Aero Jaktfalken fighters
3 Fokker CV-E S 6 light bomber/reconnaissance
2 Bristol Bulldog fighters
there were also a swedish voluntary air force called F19 wich consisted of 12 Gloster gladiator fighters, 4 hawker hart bombers and a few transports.
We also gave them weapons(artillery,rifles, machineguns, anti-air, anti-tank) and ammunition.

Sweden had an even smaller military then finland did, and still we sent much of our military equipment to Finland, those 12 gloster gladiators were 1/3 of all the figher planes Sweden had at the time.
Norwegian resistance fighters were also armed by Sweden, and trained here in "police training camps" close to the norwegian border.

During WW 1 many young finnish men secretly went to Germany and joined the german army to fight Russia, and to gain experience so they could one day free Finland from Russian rule. These men had a major part in building the finnish army after Finland gained it's independence in 1917, so yeah, there certainly was a german influence in the uniforms. These days we have different uniforms, though.

During the Winter War of 1939-40, no. In fact, the germans were helping the Soviet Union's war against Finland by stopping weapons from Italy etc. reaching Finland. Between 1941-44, yes, Finland and Germany were on the same side, but in 1944, Finland cut it's losses, made peace with Soviet Union and started a war against Germany. That's politics for you.

malamolo, I think you will find the majority of the Swedish population were in support of direct help during the the Winter and Continuation Wars. It was the coward politicians afraid of the big bad Russian bear who did very little. There were about 10,000 Swedish volunteers on Karelian Näset, and the King's son wanted to go, but his father said no.

Actually one swedish general had this plan to take over the swedish military and help if soviets attacked finland. But the goverment found out and the plan was undone. But the fact is that u people led a nice life while finns were suffering and dying. Nice "safety zone" between u and CCCP...

Yeah, it must have been quite something. It started as a fake war, where fins pretended to attack and germans pulled back without casualties, but when russians found out about it, fins had to start real campaign against germans and it all got pretty ugly. It should also be mentioned that peace treaty with russians deminished our army to bearly functional level and most of the fins fighting in lapland were raw conscripts, hence the nickname of the campaign - "crusade of the children".
