@mudkiptyler Yes it works. Harder to do detail work with it and it needs to be coated prior to painting. But for some buildings all you need to do is coat it and paint it. There are some great shapes and pieces in packaging foam.
@MrJjjaaammmeeesss They use big blocks of similar foam in constructing wharfs. I'm inland and 2-1/2 inches is the thickest I've seen (Building supply store under insulations)
There are a couple companies that sell two-part pour and let expand foams. Search out Smooth-On products. They have a great casting info section too.
i live in sweden i cant find this at any store i even went to a arkitekt store all they sold was foamboards!please tell me where i can find it...thanks
Just like in Canada they have styrofoam in most well-sorted hardware stores here in sweden.
"Frigolit" is the swedish word for "styrofoam", though it refers to the standard styrofoam, not the extruded. I said that the extruded can be found where the regular styro is found
Where exactly can you find this pink foam stuff? I make WW2 dioramas and I was thinking about making a scene with a building or some other stuff. I mainly go to either Hobby Town USA, which generally sucks, D and J hobbies, which is good, and Micheals, which is also pretty good. I live in California and theres not many hobby shops near my area.
You can buy the pink sutff.. which is where it is at. STAY AWAY from the blue stuff. I buy my pink stuff from Menards. It is less then $10 for a 8x4 feet sheet. I make my tables out of it.
Wow again thanks again man for the hobbie videos, I've painted many minis but getting dioramas and such is tough if ya dont know what your doing hehe, Thanks again keep up the vids! =D
The white stuff is nearly impossible to "carve" details into; I glue on the details to it.
Posterboard, cereal box cardboard and bits of wood can be used to add smooth walls, hatches, and detail stuff to the foam. If you do not want the "foam pebbles" to show either cover them up with a thicker "goop" coating or pressboard/poster board.
"SNAAAAAAP" awesome. Your vids are full of a lifetime of knowledge. Thank you so much for sharing this. It will benefit SO many people. Just great stuff!
Just getting into fantasy and lost my playin' buds. Played LOTR with the kid for a bit. Was thinkin' of FOW but too expensive. So don't know now. I need an army that the wife will want to play (I'll be the house army). Uh, basically that was a long winded no not yet.
Would regular packaging styrofoam do good or is it too soft?

Polycyanurate foam insulation comes in thicknesses up to 8" I think. It is the dense insulation that is good for carving and doing detail.
sjp52047 2 years ago
I've never worked with it.
Never seen it. What is it used for?
thekamloopian 2 years ago
What do you have to say about normal Styrofoam? I'm on the cheapest path to trying this out. So, what would you say about it?
TheLoser6 3 years ago
Normal styrofoam, the white pebbly stuff, actually comes in different sized foam beads and with many different densities.
All of it needs to be coated with something prior to painting. (Normal white glue will work for this in a pinch).

I'm amazed again and again at how inspiring your videos are..
Thank you so much Steve!

yea, that pink stuff is really hard for foam. I got caught srealing a 2 by 1 block and it is like balsa or even partical board.
